The Brownell Years by the numbers

Jan 13, 2022, 2:19 PM

First off, I don't hate Brad Brownell. I just want to see Clemson be competitive in basketball - and not just competitive like finishing better than 50%, but competitive like contending for championships. I did a little number crunching and here's the objective numbers from Brownell's tenure, not counting this season:

Seasons.......11
Avg W/L.......18.3 - 13.6
Avg W/L %.....57%
W/L % > 50....10

ACC W/L.......8.6 - 9.0
ACC W/L %.....49%
W/L % > 50....6
Avg ACC Rank..7.4
ACC Rank >=6..4

Overall, the records aren't bad, but in the ACC - where it really counts - it's just below average. Our best finishes were #3, #4, and #5. Our worst have been #12, #11, #9 (twice), and #8. We have a losing average in the ACC, at 8.6-9.0 - a 49% winning percentage.

I'm tempted to go into a whole bunch more analytics and such, but don't have time. Maybe someone else can do that. Short story - if you're content with average, with a few bursts of promise, then he's your guy. If you want to contend for championships - if you're chasing greatness, then he's not.

I should add that he's taken us to the NCAA tourney

three times - Round of 64 twice and Sweet 16 once

He's taken us to the NIT 3 times (1 first round, 1 second round and 1 semifinal)

No tournaments for four years (2019-20 post-season was canceled, so these only add up to 10)

Good luck finding a coach that will get good enough players to compete for Championships unless wealthy boosters band together to get them through NIL.

Apparently, the newest hot take is that we don’t pay our MBB coach enough millions of dollars to do better than this. So, you just have to shut up and take it.

Facilities and “fan support” always remain, of course, as obstacles to more success.

fan support followed success on the field/court, not the other way around. Fan support can help sustain excellence, but it doesn't get you to that point. The athletes and the coaching staff do that.

Just can't see any top Bball coach wanting to come here.

Nate Oates went to Alabama.
Get the right coach and we can win too

The same Nate Oates who is currently 2-2 in the SEC

and 11-5 overall?

Don't get me wrong, I think he's a good coach and was a good hire. Their Sweet 16 team last year was good, but let's not forget that Oates benefited a lot from some very good recruits signed by his predecessor, Avery Johnson.

Avery recruited really well there. He is an NBA champion who was an NBA head coach for a number of years. He was also a broadcaster. In short, he was a celebrity "name" coach who unfortunately couldn't translate his recruiting success into wins. But he did not leave the cupboard bare, that's for sure.

If he is able to be consistently successful at Alabama, I give him a very slim chance of staying there.

So, 2-2 in SEC and 11-5 overall you say! As if you are being critical. Let’s check their record.

First compare the SEC vs ACC. I never thought I would see the day where 1 ACC team is ranked and 5 SEC teams.
.
The one that played and beat #2 Gonzaga
The team that beat Miami Hurricanes by 32 - Miami is 13-4. The same Miami team who defeated Us.
The team that beat #11 Houston.
The team that beat #22 Tennessee
The same Alabama that is currently ranked.
So, not sure what your post about Nates is about.

Also, Alabama has a top 6 class coming in next season. Most of those players last years were his not Avery Johnson.
