Know Thine Enemy: UGA Defense Edition
May 4, 2013, 11:15 PM
|
|
As we all know, the UGA defense was gutted, losing a ton of players to graduation and the NFL. So, I thought I'd give a breakdown of what a best guess on the UGA defensive depth chart may look like come the fall. Any chance one of you Clemson fans could do something similar for your defense? TIA
DE 56 Garrison Smith | 6-3, 297, SR 58 Sterling Bailey | 6-3, 295, RS SO 47 Ray Drew | 6-5, 284, JR 94 John Taylor | 6-4, 335, RS FR
Garrison Smith is a returning starter and will be one of the better 3-4 DEs in the nation. Got big props from Chance Warmack during draft coverage when Chance called Garrison the best DE he faced all year. Sterling Bailey is currently holding off former 5-star Ray Drew for the other starting spot. They both have two years in the system, but haven’t seen a ton of time in game situations yet. John Taylor is one of those country strong kids who holds his 335 lbs very well. For his size, his athleticism is off the charts, and he is expected to push for playing time sooner rather than later.
Nose 96 Mike Thornton | 6-0, 290, RS JR 93 Chris Mayes | 6-4, 315, RS SO 97 John Atkins | 6-4, 310, FR
This is a very important position for a 3-4 defense, and a position of concern for the Dawgs. Mike Thornton has taken the lead for the starting Nose spot mostly on his three years experience in the system. However, he has seen very little playing time during that time. He has a nice low center of gravity to take on double teams, but there are concerns about not having enough “junk in the trunk”. Mayes and Atkins are two mid-year JC and prep school enrollees that will provide the needed size for the position, but they are still very green. UGA will need at least one of these guys to step up in a big way in order to be successful.
OLB 59 Jordan Jenkins | 6-3, 257, SO 89 James DeLoach | 6-3, 270, SO 91 Josh Dawson | 6-4, 250, SO 33 Chase Vasser | 6-3, 231, SR 44 T.J. Stripling | 6-6, 235, SR
Jordan Jenkins will move over to Jarvis Jones vacated Will LB spot, and will get the opportunity to showcase the skills he flashed last year at the Sam. He’s a stud in the making and should get double digit sacks at his new spot. James DeLoach is currently holding off Josh Dawson for the starting Sam LB spot. Both players have really impressed the staff with their athletic ability and big things are expected of them. TJ Stripling has struggled with injuries and putting on weight. Vasser was a starter at the beginning of last year, until he went down with a torn labrum and missed the remainder of the season. It seems from most accounts that he has been passed on the depth chart now.
ILB 52 Amarlo Herrera | 6-2, 245, JR 51 Ramik Wilson | 6-2, 234, JR 38 Ryne Rankin | 6-1, 231, FR 45 Reggie Carter | 6-2, 220, FR
Herrera made some starts last year while Alec Ogletree was out, and will now assume the full time spot. He’s a solid tackler who led the team in tackles before taking a back seat to Tree, and is the team’s leading returning tackler with 70 stops last year. Ramik Wilson is holds the inside track for the other ILB spot more from experience in the system than anything else. He’ll be pushed by a bevy of true FR including early entrants Reggie Carter and Ryne Rankin. Tim Kimbrough and Johnny O’Neal will join the party in the summer. This position is probably the biggest concern overall on the defense. Counting on true FR is not an ideal situation.
CB 5 Damian Swann | 5-11, 189, JR 2 Sheldon Dawson | 5-11, 181, SO 37 Devin Bowman | 6-0, 184, RS SO 9 Reggie Wilkerson | 5-11, 175, FR
Damian Swann is the lone returning starter in the secondary, but he is a good one. Led the team in INTs last year with 4. Sheldon Dawson has the inside track for the other spot, but he will be pushed by Bowman, Wilkerson and 2 other true freshman that arrive in the summer.
S 25 J. Harvey-Clemons | 6-5, 220, SO 28 Tray Matthews | 6-0, 194, FR 39 Corey Moore | 6-2, 214, JR 11 Connor Norman | 5-10, 207, RS JR 20 Quincy Mauger | 6-0, 197, FR
These spots look to be held down by Josh Harvey-Clemons and Tray Matthews. Josh is a former 5 star that won the defensive MVP for spring practice. Tray is a early entrant FR that came in and impressed right away. Corey Moore has the most time in the system, but still hasn’t seen the field much. Connor Norman is a former walk-on that knows the system the best and has the coaches confidence. Mauger is a early entrant true FR that will be joined by Bostick, Fluker, and Johnson over the summer.

MLB Stephone Anthony 6-3 250 Kellen Jones 6-2 230 BJ Goodson 6-1 240
WILL Spencer Shuey 6-3 250 Tony Steward 6-2 240 Kellen Jones 6-2 230
OLB Quandon Christian 6-2 230 TJ Burrell 5-11 225 Kellen Jones 6-2 230
CB Baushaud Breeland 6-1 200 Gary Peters 6-0 195 Martin Jenkins 5-9 180
CB Darius Robinson 6-0 185 Martin Jenkins 5-9 180 (coaches expect true freshman Mackensie Alexander to push for job)
SS Robert Smith Jadar Johnson
FS Travis Blanks 6-1 200 *coaches expect Jaron Kearse 6-4 210 and other true freshman to compete for backup roles, 8 db's signed in last class*
IMO, like UGA, Clemson also has more depth and talent in the front 7 on defense for first time in arguably the last decade, the secondary is fairly thin excluding the true freshman class. as you know, we just never know how that will work out, but talented and at least in 2nd year of Coach Venebles system. Should not be lack of size and talent to fill the gaps in the 2ndary this year.
Looks to be a great matchup on paper to go along with both teams outstanding offenses and deep experienced OL.
I fully expect the Clemson DL and LB core to be up for the challenge of stopping the UGA run game. I feel like they can disrupt what UGA will try and do much the same way the slowed down the LSU and SC run games last year and force UGA into a lot of 3rd and longs just like they did those 2 similar running games.

Let's talk about Vic Beasley

So, from looking at his stats from last year (14 tkls, 8 TFL, 8 Sks) it seems he was used as a pass rushing specialist and very rarely in run down situations. Is that a fair assessment?
If so, how do you all think he will do as a full time starter in run situations? He seems a little light in the pants to hold up at the point of attack consistently, however I'm sure he has elite quickness as evidenced by his 8 sacks in limited playing time. Thoughts?

He might not be ideal weight, but he routinely manhandles men that outweigh him by 100 lbs or more.
"light in the pants" is derogatory.
Do a little watching of Vic's film. You probably should rephrase.
He may not be ideal weight, but he will likely dominate your 300+ lb lineman many times throughout the game.
Then we will call your OL "light in the pants".

Now that's funny right there.
I said in this thread that one of UGA's player maybe didn't have enough "junk in the trunk". Is that derogatory too?

UGA has the athletes to run with Clemson. The biggest issue will be if they are able to handle the motion and misdirection appropriately.
Sometimes it's the X's and O's, but other times it's the Jimmy's and the Joe's.

It's not just the formations and motions, but the speed at which they'll need to figure out where to line up and who to cover. It'll be a nightmare for inexperienced players. I expect to see a lot of busted coverages.

They'll have to get lined up fast due to the furious pace of the Clemson offense. I suspect that UGA will try to simplify some things in order to lessen the potential confusion.

Y'all are going to have to play some pretty sophisticated defense to stay ahead of our O. That'll mean some confusion for your young guys. As long as we take care of the ball, we should have a decided advantage on O.
Y'all will have an advantage on O, too. It will come down to which D can get the critical stops late. I'll put my money on Clemson on that account.
