Justyn Ross Observation/Question
Dec 26, 2019, 11:53 AM

I was re-watching the SC game and noticed something and wanted to see if anyone else had the same thought. All of these screens, and shallow routes we throw toward Justyn Ross seem to be pretty effective for picking up the "thrown" yardage, but it appears that he has this habit of taking a ton of choppy steps and not going anywhere after the catch. I understand hes trying to setup and beat his defender. Just doesn't seem very effective. Anyone else notice this?

Sigh, where to begin? Upon further contemplation, never mind.

I mean I posed the question to get a legitimate response. I'd love to hear what you're thinking if you have something.

I mean just throwing that stat out there is pretty misleading. Of course he has a good ATC number. He has a lot of chunk yardage on vertical throws. I am not really considering plays like that when asking this question.

Our tall receivers are the best in college football down the field. Shorter routes don't work as well (Amari might be the exception). Alabama has shorter, shiftier guys that make tacklers miss in traffic after the catch.

The big thing i notice about Ross and Higgins ATC is they turn to the middle of the field instead of trying to get to the edge. Notice on numerous plays this year they turned in when it looked like there was 4 to 5 yard more they could have gotten at least if they went to the outside. Ross looks like hes trying to finesse things a bit much. Maybe that is why Higgins is getting more receptions... He is definitely open alot more than Ross this year.

I think those quick spot screens do 2 things...

1. It’s an extension of the run game, and if we get 4-5 yds, it’s a win.
2. It forces the defense to play sideline to sideline and cover the whole field. If we have them outnumbered, it’s automatic. I have also noticed we run them a lot when we are going tempo, which plays to the “sideline to sideline” concept.
I think we will see us bait them on this and throw over the top. We have set it up all year.

I have noticed that too. I don't know if there is anything to say beyond the observation, but I don't remember thinking this last year.
I have wondered if maybe he is hurt somehow. I have not noticed him attacking anyone hard after the catch.
