Fields was also still committed to Penn State when we got TL. I think it was actually Florida that got Fields to decommit first around the same time Matt Corral decommitted from USC and started looking at UF and UGA... SC may have done the decommitting of Corral though, I think he got suspended from his High School team at least twice.

Even UGA was recruiting TL as the #1 QB until he committed to Clemson.

This is a legitimate question. I don't remember fields being on anyone's radar besides FsU. IMO it's like he jumped up the recruiting boards out of no where. I knew of Lawrence ever since his sophomore season and I can remember reading that we were recruiting him then, but I don't remember anything on Fields. Its not like we couldn't have landed both. We got both hunter Johnson and chase Brice in the same class last year so I'm just curious if we did at all. I like TL don't get me wrong just curious if we tried recruiting him and if not what happened for us not to

He was always in the top 10, but he got a bump because he ran around in some camps in shorts and is a very good athlete. He got another boost from being uncommitted late and having the number 1 player uncommitted is good for page clicks.
I think he's a really good player but anybody saying he should be ahead of TL at this point is just foolish. It's not like Lawrence was playing at Grayson or another team just packed with 4-5 star players. Cartersville was a good team before him but they were ranked in the top teams nationally because of him.

Fields wasn't always top 10 or even a 5 star.

the QBs in GA were TL, Emory Jones and then Fields until the winter of '16... Fields got a bump into the top 50 and then blew up in the spring and summer of '17 through the camps... considering the fact that Fields only played QB as a junior and senior, he just might have a bigger upside than we are currently imagining, but i'm good with TL because he's proven himself through 4 years of HS ball and will get even better...

Because Clemson doesn't over offer and over sign. Once TL gave us his word he received ours and we no longer recruited a QB, TL committed in 2016. Fields also was committed early, to Penn State that is until Florida schools got him to decommit and out of the blue he chose UGA. This one isn't so tough to believe because he was from the state but having 2-3 5 star QBs in front of him has to show his confidence in himself.

Shortly after he won the "underwear olympics" AKA 7v7 circuit over the summer.
It was apparent by this time that the #1 guy, Lawrence, wasn't going to offer any drama or click-bait to any of the recruiting services, so they latched on to Fields.
Don't get me wrong, Fields is certainly a 5* talent who will have a great career in college and beyond. But his elevation to #1 status was nothing more than an attempt to create some drama and get some clicks

5 straight is coming coot. You guys usually peer out of the shadows around this time. I think you gain a sliver of confidence with some recruits and feel you're ten feet tall and bulletproof. November will be here before you know it. My guess is you won't have the desire to come on tnet afterwards. It'll be a ghost town in terms of visiting coots and coot trolls.

No.
And contrary to popular belief neither did UGA...Fields committed to PSU rather early after not even having an offer from UGA. UGA put their eggs in the Trevor Lawrence basket and once TL made his decisions to us, they shifted their focus over to Fields. That’s what happened. Ask any UGA fan and they’ll tell you that they got their man...

He got hot really late. He has always been a good player but absolutely sky rocketed up the boards around last summer/fall. I think at that point we'd already zeroed in on Lawrence. I'd love either player, but I think we got the better one.

Thank you that's all I was asking. I think Lawrence is a better QB as well. Beating Buford as a sophomore in the state title game is beyond impressive. Never seen him run though. Which brings into question why we didn't recruit him. With our style of O and needing an athletic mobile QB, I was just curious if he even took a visit to Clemson at some point during the recruiting process.

Different body type but he's probably as effective a runner as Boyd is. He sometimes looks slower than he is because he's so tall but he's a pretty decent athlete. Anybody stacking the box against the run is going to get burned through the air too which helps.

TL is labelled as a pocket passer but honestly he is a great runner. He doesn't choose to run on designed plays because it's not where he's best but when needed he's fast enough to make a move and break one open. He's probably a 10/10 passing and an 8/10 running. He doesn't need to rely on his legs so he has less highlights running but don't make the mistake in thinking he can't.

Re: Justin Fields

It was a reasonable question so here's a reasonable answer...
Much of our success has come from run-threat QBs going back to Woody D. We've just been through eight very successful years with Boyd, DW4 and now KB- and a significant part of those offenses included several called QB runs per game.
And we've had some serious failure with drop-backs like Kyle Parker.
Three things would make Fields a better choice. One would be limitations of the Head Coach and the Offensive Coordinator(s). Are they dogmatically married to a style and been coaching for so long they can't adapt (See Paul Johnson). Secondly, do you have an O-line that will support a drop-back (see Kyle Parker). And finally- do you have talented receivers?
Our OCs proved their versatility this year by adjusting to KBs strength as a runner and weakness as a deep passer. It was a different offense based on the skills of the players available. We won but in the process wasted a load of elite talent at WR. Secondly again, our O-line is night and day better than poor Parker's. And lastly, there's no question about our pass catchers.
One of the services (Rivals maybe) said TL was not just the best QB and player in the country but the best QB they had ever tested. Give fields the nod for legs (which we don't absolutely need given great skill at RB, a stout OL and multiple passing targets. right now) and TL gets a huge nod for the arm talent.
TL is generational arm talent and given the supporting cast and the flexibility of the coaching staff, to infinity and beyond- we got the right guy.

Kyle Parker actually had a great Freshman year. It wasn't until Auburn's cheap shot that fractured a couple of ribs that he started to have problems. If you've ever had a fractured rib it's no joke and having to throw the ball made it even worse much less taking a hit from and opposing defense. Had Kyle not been targeted in the Auburn game the season would have been a lot different. Clemson would have beaten Auburn in that game (2010 Auburn NC's) no doubt look at the bad pass in OT that would have won it for them. Go Tigers
