roll into the nineties technology you'll have slomo on your TV and can see that he made contact with the ball which wasn't under the kid's facemask. Clowney hit the chest pads first. It knocked the kid's upperbody backward and clowney's momentum pushed his face mask upward which ended in the top of clowney's helmet making violent contact with the kid's facemask.

That dude was trying to gain yardage. Clowney's job was to stop him and the the ball back. He achieved both. Not to mention that the refs blew that call big time before that.

I am for all players to be safe...but if we were to go to instant replay to check out hits, etc...the game would never end. Like him or not...that was something else to come right after that first down call. A movie director could not have done any better.

Holy Crap - anyone that thinks that was a legal hit is blind or stupid! NFL players get fined and suspended for hits like that. Not that the crappy refs would have gotten the call right. They blew the call on the first down gift, made up for it on the touchdown, and failed to make a call on the illegal hit. ESPN won't say anything negative about their pick for the 2013 Heisman Trophy!!

Hit was totally legal. He lead with his chest and wrapped the guy up. It just looked way worse because it's a 6'6 260 lb defensive lineman running full speed at a 5'10" 200 lb running back. He had a full head of steam and his job was to stop the ball carrier and get the ball back and did both of them.
Clowney didn't launch HIMSELF at the player, he made the running back launch backward from the force of the tackle. Totally legal, if there was a flag on that play we should just go to watching flag football. I just feel bad for the dude that got nailed, he will have to watch that for the rest of his college career and well into Clowney's NFL career when they do those "flashbacks."

it was like when a wr gets hit while in the air, it looks worse than it is (and feels). that rb's feet weren't planted, so he could go with the hit, looks worse than it actually was.

The top of Clowney's helmet hit the face mask, popping the RB's head back so hard his helmet was launched into the end zone.

If Clowney had impacted the RB in the chest, the RB's head would have been thrown forward from inertia. His head snapped backward from the impact to the face mask, and his helmet flew in the same direction.

That was the best defensive play I have seen in 10 years or quite possibly ever considering the circumstances. I have watched that play over and over and it was a completely legal hit as there was no targeting. His helmet level stayed at the exact same level on his whole stride and it was a complete text book tackle. To call it anything else is silly. If Clowney played on our team or even for Wake Forest I still call that one of the best plays I have ever seen.

I finally went and looked up a coot game thanks to all this hype here and eSECpn. Good, perfectly legal hit. Not the play of the year, but Clowney's earning his scholly, as it went a ways toward the coot struggles against an 8-5 team who almost lost to a weak Air Force squad on their own turf. After watching the whole crapfest, I don't know why none of them laud Ace Saunders or Sanders or whatever. Coots wouldn't even have been in a game if not for him.

Watch it again, if you can stomach it. He didn't do anything wrong. I just sat through the whole pooty game as the sun came up today. The fact that Clowney's a coot is stomach turning, but that's about it. He did what he's supposed to do, and did it well. Legal play, not spectacular, but perhaps a game changer against a weak team. Again, there wouldn't be any game at all if it weren't for the Ace kid. He was on fire, so of course they ignore him. Don't be like a yardbird fan and make up straw-grasping bull. We're Tigers, and call things how they are.
