you? For an old fart like me, I'd say the 90s. It seems like 9-11 broke something in this country. That's when bizarro conspiracy theories went from obscure, late night, Des Moines AM radio to more mainstream. There had always been the JFK & moon landing stuff. And whatever. But 9-11 seemed to tap in into something kinda weird. I don't know, just thinking out loud here. Mods, feel free to delete if not appropriate .

Same. I was at Clemson during 9/11 and was telling someone recently that the world hasn’t been the same since. I think the rise of the internet and social media sped everything up.

Agree. I got my engineering degrees using a slide rule. Computers hadn't been invented. With computers, cell phones and social media the world will never be the same again. Kids can't even accept the sex GOD gave them!!

I think most people agree that the "old world" ended in the dark occult ritual of 9-11-2001.
But i would say the internet itself is the greatest military weapon ever created, and it is a weapon.

I was in Chem lab in Hunter that morning and didn't get out until after the planes had hit. When I walked into the Loggia they had tvs pulled out and I watched the buidlings fall. Dark day and it does seem like some ### was opened.

Agree 9/11 was a baddie but last 2 years of Clemson O not looking like it has or should was another non-sensual mystery on a local level.
Wait, I think most of us knew why O was all over the map in consistency but coaches had no back-up QB to pull team out of bad orbit.
2023 may be the recovery year and good sense will return to Tigertown~

especially early on. Getting actual news, 24/7 with reporters on the ground where the news is happening, was great. The reporting was about as unbiased as it gets, and the objective was to deliver the news. Even their political programming made an honest attempt to present all sides fairly (remember "Crossfire"?). By the time FOX figured out they could get more viewers by providing a politically biased slant to the news aimed at a target audience, and became infotainment, and CNN, under Time-Warner, decided to do the same, it all started going to shid.

That is when my dad was recalled for the Korean non-declared war. We left our little town of Plymouth, NE, population 476 and I began life as an Air Force brat. Military brats will understand the rest of you never will. There were many things it taught me both good and bad. Fortunately because of strong family love I made it through with only minor negative issues and learned to adapt to many different environments. However, I still wonder why good people suffer and there is world hunger and evil.

I played golf with Lewis at Florence Country Club about 20 years ago. He took a picture of me paying the $5 I lost in our match. He had it printed 8x10 and signed it “ To Webb the only Clemson guy I like” Lewis Grizzard Have it hanging in my home in Clemson. That was one memorable day. He didn’t say anything for two holes and I told him a joke he hadn’t heard to break the ice. He then proceeded to tell me every joke he could not tell in public! Unbelievable!

It's hard to say when things began to make no sense to me, but since Lewis died 3/20/94, I would have to say that a dead man teeing it up at FCC is proof the world we once knew has changed.
Lewis is dead and I don't feel so good myself.

I don't know if I would say it is dying but I certainly would say it isn't healthy. When I see how Americans stood up against wokeness and came out against Bud Light and Target and actually did a boycott that was very effective, it still gives me hope in an honorable America lurking beneath the surface.

Today. And yesterday. And the day before.
The world's always been full of both good and terrible people and been through good and terrible times. Nothing new. I guess the biggest difference is that we're further along in actively destroying the planet and it will eventually kill us all. Maybe whatever evolves a few million years after we're gone will do better than we did.

9/11 was definitely a major turning point.
As a millennial, I noticed the biggest shift around 2007/2008.
Housing Crisis/Recession - Smart Phones and Social Media for all (Facebook really did a number on society)
It was also around this time the cops started cracking down hard on standard college partying.

‘98, ‘99, 2000.
We were living on the side of an active volcano in Sicily. It was old world European and people interacted on a very personal level in their own little towns. They avoided going down into the big city of Catania and they absolutely preferred to patronize all the mom and pop business in their villages. I lived in one of those villages.
The internet was new and I was actually grateful for it because I could find the Clemson broadcast streamed on the internet. But Jim Phillips was getting old and he sometimes failed to give you essential details.
Anyhoo…..life was simple up there on the mountain ( Etna ). You ate well, you drank fine wine all the time and you talked to people.
The wife and I are mulling over a plan to retire and buy a villa there again.

Dancing madness anyone? - How the Indians of the Americas felt when the Europeans came over and began wiping them out with germs and guns? - Millions of Jews and others being led to the gas chambers less than 100 years ago?
Yeah it goes on and on. etc etc
So, I do get that you feel gobsmacked that the expectations of straight, white, church-going America has been completely upended in the last 40 years and you're not wrong but what you are is just another number in the long long list of people in the history of humanity who have had the rug pulled out from under them.

I've had several personal crises that rocked my world, but yeah, I'd say 1998-2001 changed me in big ways. New to the Internet and spending hours daily on it, into the night, reading everything, looking at everything. Enlightening and frightening all at the same time.
Morally there was some kind of shift around mid 1990s and continuing for 20 years where wrong became right and right became wrong. It's still here largely, but you do see some backlash now and a whiff of a return to normalcy...that I don't think will ever fully materialize.

The world drastically changed when Bill Clinton became president. The morals and values of this country have never been the same. He brought a sleezie nastiness to the WH.

You are right about one thing.......everything is upside down, backwards and all messed up. However, I think it started way back with the Great Society Programs of LBJ. At that point in history, over 70% of kids were raised in 2 parent households, virtually everyone was of the same religion, the Christian Work Ethic was the norm, the news media was patriotic and believable, teachers were our heroes, as were cops.It all began to change the day Madeline Murray O'hare and her Commie crew from Austin had prayer removed from schools and the revolutionaries and hippies sprang up on college campuses everywhere and went on to become our political leaders. They changed our world and not for the better. The society we see and live in today all came out of the 60's revolution.

Yeahhhhh, and while we're at it, wasn't that the decade soccer style kickers took over on football fields. I should have realized they were the real problem, not the hippies. Probably a bunch of socialists and communist kickers. d a m m I t

least some of the perceived increase is just the fact that "instant media" makes EVERYBODY'S craziness instantly known to the entire world. In older times, it might never have been known beyond the town limits of the town it happened in. And, that craziness breeds copycats, which just propagates the increase.

Probably goes back to the MK ultra experiments & child trafficking as they came out in 1998 in my opinion.
Agendas were exposed & the coverups began with a bang shortly afterwards.
