Joe Wilkinson, Safety signee

I know I am not a professional scout or anything, but I watched Joe Wilkinson's highlight after hearing Dabo gush about him. I know you need to take some of Dabo's comments with a grain of salt, but I completely agree that the guy is a missle and really good on kickoff return.
My question is, how does a guy like him who plays at the highest level in Georgia, get defensive player of the year honors etc, get ranked a three-star, and like the 130th best player in Georgia?
It just seems odd to me. I mean, he's fast and 6' 1".

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe most of the evaluations by the recruiting services are based on camps. No idea if the kid attended any, some or many but it may be a situation where he wasn't evaluated enough?

His best offer was App State. Head-shaker to me.

I'd like to know what his camp participation was. That drives a lot of these rankings. If his family could not afford to send him to camps then his grade would take a hit. But like the ball, the tape don't lie.

I can't explain it but it is why I like to trust the coaches on recruits and not the star rating so much. They know who they need and how to evaluate players. I have no idea who and how the services rate guys hence some odd results at times

He's a form tackler and hits like a sack of bricks. Will definitely contribute on special teams for us. Hope he proves me wrong and becomes an all-world safety here.

I don't know the measurables, but he looked fast on the field in the video. Like I said, I am not scout!

Teed up and kicked off is when stars mean anything. You’ve got to have a LOT more than stars to become one. Beginning with determination and desire and a work ethic that separates you from others. I think that Coach Swinney and his staff do a great job developing players. You need to look no further than a kid named Renfrow to see what determination and confidence can do for a players status. If you question the coach you really aren’t a fan who supports the team.
Dabo knows. I promise you he will do the right things… for the Tigers.
Looks like a quality recruiting class to me. But what do I know?

He also was a walk on who earned his scholarship by abusing our best CBs in practice. If you gave this kid a walk on opportunity, no one would question it. Of course people are going to question it when he has no other power 5 offers and we initially offer a scholarship. To say Dabo should not be questioned sounds like worship, and no man is above reproach. Now, I stated that I believe this kid has a chance to contribute on special teams, anything beyond that would be a pleasant surprise that any fan would welcome.

There are 530,550 public high school students in the state if Georgia...

If we assume 25% are seniors, then 132,638 are in the 12th grade. Let's assume half of those are not able to play, we are now at 66,319. 130/66,319 = 0.00196. So this guy is in the top 0.5% of his peers. Not too bad.

Anyone who gets a scholarship is a special talent compared to the masses.

But this dude was region 6-AAAAAA defensive player of the year in Georgia. That's a pretty big deal to only get an App State offer.
Why did all the D1 coaches out there not see what Dabo's staff saw? I mean, they watched him for two years they said.

What changed in the last month for Clemson to offer but no other power 5? We missed on others and didn’t pull the trigger on some portal kids and we were too late getting back on other prospects after initial offers fell through (remember we don’t offer a bunch of kids like other schools do). He didn’t get better than what he was we just need to get someone, this seems to happen a good bit each year with us the last three years. Other teams fall backs tend do be (not always) kids with multi power 5 offers. My guess is he is more like 170 than 185 and will be a while before he plays any significant plays outside of Special teams. I can see a scenario where his redshirt junior year he is 200 lbs on the two deep and plays significant snaps. I’m just glad he doesn’t appear to have some kind of connection to Dabo’s ex teammates or past player's lol . Another thing, if App offers I feel Pretty good about it, they are pretty good at evaluation kids that tend to get over looked. I bet the kid turns out to be pretty good to be honest but just may take a while to get his potential. In todays college football world where it’s win now or you are fired not many coaches tend to see the long term Potential on a kid and take a chance like Dabo and his staff.
Last, if no one else is going to say it heck I will. He is a white safety,I don’t care what you say kids are not always looked at the same. Dabo tends to take kids like him where others would take another kid.

Some of these kids are really good but have no parents or coaches getting info out on them especially if they play for small schools. My good bud who is a linebacker coach at CSU said Kentucky got a steal on a player that played in Marion County that no one knew about. SC tried to get him late but he stayed with the Kentucky offer.

It's either his measurables or the fact he's white.
Yes, there are coaching staffs who won't consider white DBs or safetys and it could easily affect their ratings.
You say he's fast but we'd need to see times to know that. You can't really watch high school film and know anything other than a college prospect looks like a man among boys.
While you can say that his rating is low because he didn't attend camps, you can generally trust the measurables from a camp and you can't trust them at all from a high school coaching staff.
Do you really think he's 6'1 and 215?
I'd guess most guys listed like that from a high school are 5'9 and 180.

Not sure he is "fast", but he doesn't look slow either. I'd like to see more of him and his ability to change direction. THAT is what determines most DB's ability to play the position. If he doesn't have that ability, add 15 pounds and make him an LB.

You can tell if you've been watching football a long time or played. Kids fast enough straight line. My guess around 4.55 to 4.6. Fairly certain he will be an in the box player.
