Jay Bilas comment on NCAA Board of Governor's Decision...

Oct 30, 2019, 9:50 AM

He said NCAA is using as stalling tactic. But this quote was classic...

"It is like NCAA saying we are going to give you wi-fi, but only in Amish locations."

I thought that was pretty funny.

I totally agree.

There was a similar conversation on Packer and Durham this morning. I think NCAA just did this to stall all the local state legislation. They will drag this out as long as they can because it cuts into their bottom line. If the states keep pressure on them by moving forward with local legislation, it will become interesting.

Excellent quote though.

It goes into effect in 14 months. That is pretty darn quick considering all of the things to be figured out. The NCAA had a whole lot of things that they say they are going to address to ensure fair competition. That means more rules with each one having the potential for unintended consequences. Didn't hear the commentary but sounds to me that Bilas is advocating for a quicker implementation which I think would be very irresponsible.

I am curious about how it cuts into the NCAA profits. They aren't paying are they, the universities will be paying. You and I will be paying through IPTAY and ticket price increases would be my guess.

Only companies that use the athletes for endorsements would be paying.

The schools and the NCAA will probably get more money as I'm sure they will charge royalties for jerseys to be worn, schools to be mentioned, NCAA football to be mentioned, etc.

Bilas has been beating this horse for a long time.

He is just trying to find news ways to complain about the NCAA because if they do start to let players make money then Bilas will fade away. It's all he ever talks about anymore.

He isn't in this to get what he thinks is right for the players. He just found a narrative that he could try to use to get attention.

He wants to keep beating the horse while also trying to keep the horse alive.

What??? Do you follow Bilas? Bilas is very pro-athlete on this issue. He has always been.

Also, this doesn't cut into NCAA profits at all, unless you are talking about the licensing money they might have received from video game developers, which they currently aren't getting anyway.

Bilas is pro-Bilas.

He has simply chosen the pay for play as his battle to get his fame.

According to Bilas' business model, players would be under contract with a NonCompete clause.

#1. Many industries are no longer recognizing NCCs because courts are not upholding them. A person with a particularly valuable skill set must be allowed to ply their trade in a manner that is beneficial to their future. My daughter with 'only' a Masters in HR Law knows that. I wonder why the non-practicing big shot from Duke Law doesn't know that.

#2. Unless schools are restricted in their contract numbers, the NCC would allow them to stockpile players like was done prior to 1973(?). So the players' rights would actually regress. The NCC would be more binding than the openness of the Transfer Portal. Freedom to transfer with eligibility would be gone. You'd be giving money instead of scholarships, and then take away the student-athletes' options. Not a fair trade.

The reason I question whether schools will be restricted is because Bilas' focus is on $. The NCAA only has one purpose for existing, and that is to moderate some degree of fairness in the academics and athletic competitions between its extremely disparate 1268 member schools. According to his speeches, Bilas is simply trying to eliminate any limitations on earnings. He is the outlaw trying to gun down the occasionally heavy handed sheriff. Then he will walk away leaving the town to fend for itself while calling himself a folk hero.

The reason he is totally wrong is that the NCAA only exists at the will of its member schools. The schools created the NCAA. Their participation in it is the only place where it gets its power. If it is destroyed, the schools will have to create a new NCAA, but it will be a Wild West until that happens.

I'm sure Johnny Manziel would have been a much better person if he had profited from his jersey sales. Aren't you?
