More recently, in December 2024, controversy arose when Trump and Elon Musk opposed a bipartisan government funding bill. The original bill included provisions like the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act 2.0, extending $12.6 million annually for pediatric cancer research, and other measures potentially totaling up to $190 million in related funding. After their intervention, House Republicans revised the bill, removing these provisions. Critics claimed this "eliminated" child cancer research funding. However, the Senate later passed a standalone version of the Gabriella Miller Act on December 20, 2024, restoring $63 million for pediatric cancer research through 2031. Other proposed bills, like the Give Kids a Chance Act, were not included in the final package, leaving some potential funding unrealized, but existing NIH and NCI programs continued unaffected by this specific legislative fight.

Baseline NIH funding, including for pediatric cancer, persists, and the 2024 debate was about additional, not total, funding. Trump’s actions have at times threatened reductions or delayed specific initiatives, but he did not eliminate all spending. The pediatric cancer research community still relies heavily on federal allocations, which have not been zeroed out under his influence.
