College Baseball is NOT a major college sport

I'm tired of people saying college baseball is a major college sport. Some fans (me included) care about the sport, but the nation could care less about college baseball. I don't think you can call a sport a major college sport unless it makes money. That leaves 2 sports Football and Basketball. 3rd page of SI after the national championship doesn't make a sport "major."

of who won the college world series on sportscenter the day after the national title game, you know not that many people across the nation care about it. Also, with the increase in popularity of women's basketball over the past 20 years, women's basketball is closer to being the 3rd major college sport over college baseball.

be talked about on tnet, like it was before the coots won 2 national titles in a row. Before the coots national titles, you would see posts 3-5 days old on the first page of the message board. There has been about triple amount of posts on tnet during baseball season since the coots won the national title. We have a small passionate baseball fan base, but as far as tnet baseball season was just waiting for football season.

The last USC clemson basketball game at Littleton had 7,238.
The last baseball game at BTF had 6,016.
The last baseball game at Carolina Stadium 8,242.
I'm not sure where I'm seeing the overwhelming discrepancy where basketball dominates baseball in attendance.

I was talking about Clemson on a game by game basis during the regular season, Basketball draws more fans than Baseball. Now we know at SCU for y'all's basketball games, coot fans won't even accept free tickets into Colonial Dead Life Arena. We also know, that before SCU's national titles in Baseball, 95% of coot fans knew nothing about their baseball team.

on average. That's not really a surprise when you consider there's a larger venue and fewer games. And no, college baseball doesn't compete with football and men's basketball (I would venture to guess that at Clemson it's WAY more popular than women's basketball), but it certainly has an audience. And it's getting more and more television coverage every year. A couple of years ago, Cal-Berkeley very nearly shut down its baseball program and this year they've replaced the scoreboard and added lights to the field to accomodate television. You're seeing more and more highlights of it on television (case in point the NC State center fielder's catch that was on SportsCenter's Top 10 last week). Clemson will be on national television 4 times this season, and 6 more times on regional TV. You'll see more of it on TV once the women's basketball tournament is over. If it didn't matter, then so many schools wouldn't spend so much money on it. No, it doesn't make a profit at Clemson, but it's pretty close. I remember several years ago Clemson hosted an NIT game the same day as a home baseball game and the baseball game had more people (and it was a weekday).

It's only an epic fail in your deluded mind.
Baseball plays three games in three days over the weekend. Naturally the attendance is going to be lower on a per game basis.
However in this case more people attend the USC clemson basenall game than attend the USC Clemson basketball game. And that 7,000 number came from Littlejohn. So we support our baseball team better than you support your basketball team.

It isn't bragging about going 7-6. It's a reminder of the lack of objectivity toward carolina on this forum.
Since that prediction by York we are 38-15. How shortsighted and uninformed was York's prediction.
Most importantly I don't donate and rarely post so I can't edit it.

38-15. It's a reminder about where your program was at the time, and a reminder about how quickly the coots will be a bottom feeder once again. Georgia and Florida have came out of their mini slumps, and if UT is successful under Butch Jones it's back to being cellar dweller's for SCU. Your coach is getting old and even hinted in his remarks about the outback bowl that the end is near for him. But SCU will continue to schedule 3 easy OOC games every year to pad their schedule with wins, only thing is the SEC Least era is coming to an end and back to being the SEC east. Only way SCU even has the chance of competing with UGA, UF, and UT in the long run is having a young coach that will be around for a while. Spurrier is old, and SCU has never been able to attract young head coaches in football.

Easy OOC Games??? UNC,UCF, Coastal Carolina, and Clemson? Yeah I guess you could say 4 easy wins! Even though 3 out the 4 finished in top 40 in country. Considering yall Scheduling SCST and Citadel to FCS teams. Carolina is not Bottom feeders no more. Top 6 in SEC is bottom feeders??? DO you know what Bottom means? Tennessee will struggle for a few more seasons. South Carolina will be a top 6 team in SEC for years to come. Way after Spurrier era.

regardless of how Clemson or SCU is doing. Sorry but UNC is a mediocre team, UCF an average mid major, and Coastal Carolina a terrible FCS team. If the coots are so big and bad now, go out and schedule some ranked OOC opponents outside of Clemson. By the way I didn't say SCU were bottom feeders now, I said they will be back to that status soon. Learn reading comprehension first, next time before you post. Right now, you're just a middle of the pack SEC team.
Since SCU is so big and bad now, why don't they try to get some teams like Texas, OU, OSU, KSU, TCU, FSU, Louisville, or VT onto their out of conference schedule? Oh, I know why they continue to avoid tough OOC opponents, because they won't be able to pad their schedule with easy wins as the SEC Least era is coming to an end.

does no one on this board realize how ridiculous ya'll saying this is? our OOC schedule is switched with yalls, we play 2 teams from the ACC, y'all play 2 from the SEC. UGA finished first in the SEC East last year, UNC finished first in the ACC Coastal last year. Insulting our OOC schedule is just trashing your own conference.

You're a #######. That's how you sound, nobody pounds their chest about being in the ACC and if we do it's because we are one of the two or three programs that has kept it afloat in football and baseball. South Carolina can really only say they have contributed to SEC baseball since the basketball team is a bunch of JV players and the football team can't finish above 4th.

Baseball plays more games than Basketball...

We are on the internet, you would think you would do a little math first before making yourself even look more stupid. Sorry but the average attendance for a Basketball game is higher than the average attendance for a Baseball game. And there was no 2012 basketball season. There was the 2011-2012 season, then there was 2012-2013 season. Again another Epic Fail on your part. You're so ignorant that you don't even know the Basketball season occurs in two calendar years. Ah, but math is a very weak point for coots.

Now divide those numbers by the number of home games.
Basketball: 17 home games Baseball: 35 home games
If you're going to use the Internet, at least use it correctly.

I say that because I'm an economic major at Clemson and look at things with money. USC winning has made the sport very popular in the state. That doesnt make it a major sport. USuC football fans became baseball fans because the were winners. Clemson football fans became Clemson baseball fans because they want a national championship. I'm from Columbia and I never saw baseball support for USuC until after their first championship. Here's a question for you to think about coot. How much coverage has espn had for the start of college baseball? Espn cares about viewers. If the country cared about baseball it would be on there. Espn picks up the baseball playoffs because its during a down time during the year. You would say soccer is a major sport if USC wins one. (I'm a Clemson soccer fan by the way, and we've won nc's)

What's the ratio for games played to attendance? How much profit did the baseball team make compared to the basketball team? It's easy to find one statistic to support your argument. Try using these numbers to help your argument.....

Don't tell us. Instead I suggest you contact Chad Holbrook( the new USC coach) or Jack Leggett. I am certain they would love to discuss YOUR opinion!

If there was no fan support for college baseball, how did we build a $35 million dollar stadium before we won a national championship?

I just don't understand how anyone can be so biased they refuse to be rational.
The 2011-12 basketball season is considered the 2012 season.
Secondly, only a fool would argue Duke's a football first school because their football attendance is nearly 3x higher than their basketball attendance.

I don't care what the nation cares about...Clemson does care
Mar 5, 2013, 8:20 AM
|
|
about baseball...the ACC cares about baseball with the number of teams ranked in the top 25...the south cares about baseball with the number of teams ranked in the top 25...the south cares about baseball with the amount of money spent on baseball facilities/improvements over the past 10 years.....
Lets get real honest here...the absolute only reason these post started a couple of years ago and continue today is because SC won a couple of national titles and started beating us..that's is. Some couldn't handle their success so they say the sport isn't a big deal. That's like getting pissed at your buddy who got a hot wife and saying blonds with big ##### and long legs aren't desirable just because you don't have one. Get over it. In the south baseball is a big deal and the CUAD would tell you baseball is a big deal at Clemson.

like coots used to talk. Whenever they used to get dominated by us in a sport then you would hear them making excuses about why they lost and how they don't really care about it..... We used to laugh at that kind of attitude people...now we have fans that believe the same bull. Wow man... you need to jump ship.

care about it, and he made the point that he cares about Clemson baseball, but on a national perspective does this country really care about college baseball? The answer is no.
I love Clemson baseball, and it frustrates me to no end when Clemson loses to the coots. I hate that they won a couple NC's. But that doesn't change the fact that college baseball is almost irrelevant.

there are things I can say that are true but sometimes when and how you say them comes across as sour grapes...I never saw a post on Tnet about baseball not being important until SC started winning....NOT ONE...been on here for now 11 yrs. SC starts winning in baseball and post are all over the board that baseball isn't a big deal. Stats start showing up around numbers of games on tv, attendance, tv ratings for the games, etc. Before SC started winning...baseball was what is was...a big deal to Clemson and a point of pride.
Instead of talking down the sport let's get back to winning.

I'm certainly not disagreeing with you

but I'm also not going to argue against the OP's statement that college baseball is not popular on a national level.
That fact does not change the fact that I want Clemson to be dominant in the sport. That does not change the fact that I will be present for several baseball games this year. And I will watch Clemson baseball every time they are on television too.
Oh, and I hate the coots.
That is all

If Clemson won a NC in baseball it be a big deal. Gamecocks have been huge baseball since the day Ray Tanner took over. We have had more than 6000 people at or games on avg sense 02. We have the 4th highest attendance rating in college baseball. We have cared for a long time. I pull for every gamecock team no matter what sport

completely agree...if we won a national title in baseball
Mar 5, 2013, 9:18 AM

it would be a really big deal...really big deal. I've seen one national title in my life....1981 football (not counting soccer)....now OF COURSE...winning a baseball national title does not compare to football....not even close...nor is it close to a basketball national title...not even close to that...but it's a big deal.

If you go to the ESPN homepage, you have to click on More Sports, then College Sports to even see any baseball scores.
Then at that point, they group baseball scores in with hockey, lacrosse, and softball.
I think that tells you all you need to know.
That and the fact that 99% of college baseball games are not televised.

are wasting a hades lots of money on Doug Kingsmore which could better used other places.
Good college baseball programs certainly enjoy the sport so if you are not serious about it, then I am sure that SC and other interested programs will be glad that Clemson gets the hades out of the way.
Carry on.

When it comes down to it baseball is a big deal in the south but not nationally. Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and some other southern states (Tennessee, Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, etc.) produce some of the best baseball talent in the country and we consistently put top teams in the college world series. People down here care about baseball but people on the west coast don't care and people up north only like hockey.
Winning a baseball national title isn't even close to winning one in basketball or football but it's better than winning one in like soccer or something. It's a major sport, but it most likely isn't a major revenue sport for most schools.
