Our offense was stopped by our fumbles and missed field goals. Regardless of our inability to score, we cannot give up 28 points a game.

after the game was pretty much out of reach. Our guys were deflated and the push to make stops obviously left. It looks bad though and won't bode well come bowl time. It will be what they look at unless we inflict that type of beating on FSU or Nd

The last TD was, but the other TD was with 10 minutes left in the game when we were only down 6. Defense needed a stop there and didn't get it

Agreed with the above post that we probably wouldn’t have given up more than 17-21 points max if we had a lead. Those 2 fumbles and bad kicks sucked out the fun.

The offense was kind of bad even disregarding the TOs

Cade averaged 4.9 yards per attempt - that's absolutely horrible. Those are the numbers Northwestern and Iowa QBs put up in recent years that became memes.
5.3 yards per rush was fine. The running game in the 3rd quarter was clearly the bright spot for the offense in this one. (Though Duke did average 6.6 yards per carry to beat us in rushing efficiency.)
The offense was having issues even before the turnovers though. Our 1st half drives were:
-5 plays,11 yards, punt -11 plays, 49 yards, missed FG -3 plays, 7 yards, punt -5 plays, 11 yards, punt -5 plays, 18 yards, TD (thank you Duke punt returner) -2 plays, 36 yards, end of half
132 yards total on 31 plays and no turnovers. One missed FG but it was a 41 yarder which is not a given for many college kickers (apparently ours in particular.)
Roughly a quarter of those 132 yards came on our final possession (10 seconds to play) with Duke sitting back in prevent and essentially giving us two 18 yard gains. Outside of those two plays to end the half, we had a whopping 2 plays go for more than 10 yards.
This offense right now is only capable of grinding everything out with runs and short passes and basically hoping Mafah or Shipley bust one and turn it into a big gain.
Cleaning up the TOs will obviously help, but won't fix other issues with the offense. The passing game is broken right now and we can't generate any big plays.

Can we stop blaming turnovers for the lack of points?
In the 2016 43-42 Loss to Pitt, Watson had 3 interceptions, 2 of them being in the endzone. We still racked up 42 points and over 600 yards
In the same year, we beat NCST in OT 24-17 with 4 turnovers (3 fumbles).
The problem isn't that we had 2 fumbles in the goal line. The problem is that our offense is so bad that it usually takes us 10+ plays and 5+ minutes to make it down the field every time so every RZ possession is precious. 5 years ago we'd shake it off and be down in the RZ 3 plays later.

The nc state game was luck. They missed an easy field goal to win the game at the end. We should have lost that game.

Watch that video of analysis of Cade during the game and you will there opportunities for big downfield plays. The blame for those missed opportunities was on Cade sometimes and on the WR others. We fix those mistakes and we are back to having that big play threat. The worst part was that nearly everyone of those mistakes were self inflicted....

He's good at his job. But you dont get to (and probably shouldnt) play the "hey we're better on paper" card in the wake of opening day, nationally televised bed-soiling against a team that, before Tuesday, hadnt cracked the T25 in five years.
