Late hit on Hot Rod on 4th down -

Jan 6, 2014, 10:57 AM

Help me out on this call. The late hit on Hot Rod on 4th down blew my mind as much as all the other horrendous calls. Stopped a 1/2 yd. short on 4th down, late hit called out of bounds, results in a turnover on downs with the penalty enforced on OSU's offensive play. Same thing happened in the Godaddy Bowl last night, resulting in 1st down for the offense. WTHeck, man!?!?

It was a late hit and absolutely should have been called***

Re: It was a late hit and absolutely should have been called***

it was a late hit and it was called, it was just invoked after giving the ball to OSU... which means the defense can target anyone on a 4th down play as long as you don't allow a first down..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah...I was referring to the other late hit on Hot Rod***

what's just as bad, is that OSU #11, targeted HotRod, leading with the crown of his helmet and made helmet to helmet contact... he should have been tossed from the game.. obvious in the replays, but not one mention..

the taunting flag was suspect as well..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dang right!

Jan 6, 2014, 11:05 AM

Dang right! That's what I'm talking about! I thought the same thing. Did not realize it until I saw the replay. Definitely should have been tossed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree - the guy led with his helmet and should have been..

Jan 6, 2014, 11:06 AM [ in reply to Re: Late hit on Hot Rod on 4th down - ]

tossed.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was called but not inforced!

Jan 6, 2014, 11:07 AM [ in reply to Re: Late hit on Hot Rod on 4th down - ]

I couldn't tell if they inforced it against OSU on the change of posession or not. Anybody see if they did?

I saw that also, I even rewinded a bit at the time to make sure that I saw what I thought I saw. Not only was it helmet to helmet, it looked to me like he launched himself at HotRod.

I have never seen it called before, but apparently when he ran out of bounds short of the "line to gain" the play ended and the ball was turned over to the OSU offense. The fouled happened after that, so the penalty was assessed on the OSU offense. It is similar to a foul thAt is called after a team punts the ball. The foul does not mean that the offense gets a first down, but that the receiving team get the fifteen yards back from where they were down or fir caught it.

I think that is right, but just have never seen it called.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not complicated

Jan 6, 2014, 11:07 AM

By rule a late hit out of bounds is AFTER the play is over. It is a post-play PF.

So, that means the result of the play is still in effect prior to the penalty being marked off. And thus the turnover on downs occurred prior to the penalty being enforced against them.

The confusion comes from the fact that we rarely see it occur after 4th down, but see it on occasion after 3rd down. If Beasley's superman/slash had happened after 4th down rather than 3rd it would've been the same outcome. Our ball and then the penalty enforced.

Yep, the fact that it occurred on 4th down is the key.***

Yeah I had no problem with that part but I was not happy with the helmet to helmet hit the guy put on hot rod. I guess since it was not called that way to begin with it could not be reviewed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, and I'm surprised to see so many struggling with this

Jan 6, 2014, 11:25 AM [ in reply to It's not complicated ]

I've learned a few rules from tigernet myself over the years, but this doesn't seem that hard to get a handle on, and it's been the topic of conversation all weekened. :)

Late hit means the play was over. The play was a 4th down play, and when it was over we didn't reach the first down. That's a change of possession immediately when the runner's foot hit out of bounds. Then the late hit happened and was enforced after the change of possession.

Beasley's happened after 3rd down, not fourth, so the ball was still in OSU's possession.

[Consider a 4th down punting analogy... If the punter is "roughed" while punting, that's a personal foul during the play and the kicking team maintains possession with a 1st down. Alternatively, suppose that the kick is made without incident, the returner runs it back for a few yards and is tackled and the play is over. If at that point someone runs up to the kicker on the sidelines and kicks him in the knee, it's still a PF, but the kicking team doesn't get the ball back since the play is over.]

Re: Late hit on Hot Rod on 4th down -

I can't say for sure what the official rule is, but logically it makes sense. When McDowell was pushed out of bounds short of the first down marker, Clemson turned the ball over on downs. The late hit was a dead ball foul enforced after the play in which Clemson lost possession. It would be like a player making a diving interception and then one of his teammates laying out somebody on the other team. The team throwing the interception wouldn't get the ball back.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's a "dead ball foul" thus the play was over

Jan 6, 2014, 11:08 AM

But the dang OSU player should have been ejected. I thought for a while THAT was what they were reviewing !

This was the big topic of conversation in my office today and was actually brought up by several UT fans that said the entire game was a joke in officiating. For once we agree about something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why was Beasley's bs call

Jan 6, 2014, 11:11 AM

an auto 1st down and not a fourth down yardage penalty? it seems like Hot rod's would have been assessed the same way

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was 3rd down (iirc)***

Jan 6, 2014, 11:13 AM

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was after 3rd down.

Jan 6, 2014, 11:15 AM [ in reply to why was Beasley's bs call ]

Thus it was committed while we were still on defense. And is applied that way (15 yards and an automatic first down).

The second our runner stepped out of bounds short of the line to gain, we lost the ball. Then they committed to late hit which is applied AFTER the change of possession.

Re: Did it occur on 4th down last night?***

Jan 6, 2014, 11:22 AM

I've seen the same play result in a 1st down for the offense every time I can remember encountering this situation.

Last night in the Godaddy bowl, same exact situation results in a 1st down for the offense. I've never seen a late hit enforced after turning the ball over to the D.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But have you ever seen it on 4th down?***

It wasn't 4th down

Jan 6, 2014, 11:27 AM [ in reply to Re: Did it occur on 4th down last night?*** ]

Last night (according to the box score) there were 3 times that PF's caused first downs, and 2 were after 2nd down and the other was after 3rd down.

Re: It wasn't 4th down

Okay - I'm getting it through my thick skull now. I guess I can't say for sure I've seen it on fourth down. Understand it now, but don't agree with it. Seems to me that would lead to some ugly hits on 4th down & the play going out of bounds.
