Is it just me or are reactions to Skip Bayless' comments
Jan 3, 2023, 4:53 PM

|
last night about the game and Damar Hamlin's medical emergency a bit of an overreaction? I get what people are saying, but he ended his tweet with "which suddenly seems so irrelevant" - which, as I take it, is him saying that the same WAS important, but is not extremely irrelevant. I think it was a legitimate question, and still is, but certainly not the priority concern at the moment. Am I not reading it right, or not being offended enough, or what? I just don't see the outrage (I can see it had he not added that last little disclaimer, but with that in there....).

Over reaction, they are taking what he said way out of context but not surprising. Now your seeing the pile on affect, people think they are going to get a bunch of likes and follows for trashing him

Not a Bayless fan but yes, complete overreaction. It's a disgrace how people try to jump on every little comment and misinterpret things or blow them out of proportion. Cancel culture at it's peak right now.
Many of the first to jump on him are the usual suspects by the way. Not the greatest reputations in that crowd.

I read it the same way you did...he was making the point that everything else was irrelevant in light of Hamlin's health crisis.
But we live in an age where a sense of self-righteous rage is more important than facts or reality. So, the piling on will continue.

I don’t think Bayless used good discernment at all.

His timing was horrible. Everyone still cares about the playoffs, but it’s one of those unwritten rules that you aren’t supposed to say that you care at a time like that.
I don’t think people should be angry with him or cancel him though. As usual, people are overreacting.

Yeah it as probably taken out of context which is so easy to do over typed text. But sometimes you jsut gotta put the phone or tablet down and let the moment breathe. I know its his job to have a quick take but this moment is not a "hot take" moment and he has to know better... at least at this point in his life. This might be his last hurrah. I gotta feeling he may be fubar.

Seemed like he was legitimately asking how the NFL would be able to get this game played, which many other are wondering as well I'm sure. The mob always needs a new villain, however, so now he's the guy until somebody gets misgendered elsewhere.

Here's is the issue...

I'll say this first: Timing, positioning & intent is everything. Also, your history says a lot about your intentions.
Damar hadn't even made it to the hospital yet and Skip tweeted:
"No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game - but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome".
The timing is terrible as the game and rescheduling is his focal point of his tweet. This was what was most important in his statement, b/c he lead with that and it's the what he wrote about the most.
Almost as an after thought (highlighted by the usage of "..."), he finished the tweet with:
"...which suddenly seems so irrelevant".
While I think he meant well here, it came off as callous to what happened b/c making it secondary to his original point.
Many media members and athlete jumped on him b/c his timing, callousness and his history as an egoistical talking head who likes to say things for shock value. Those people that know him, saw through him as someone only interested in delivering shocking takes for his own attention and wealth.
He knows he screwed up, b/c he's apologized twice since to try and save face.

Out of touch and insensitive. He phrased the importance of the postseason competition in favor of the young man’s life.
It’s weird so many people don’t get that here

Probably just trying to get a rise out of people that’s what they do. I’m sure he realized that it was not one of his better moments. Not that there has been many. I quit sometime back watching all that made up drama. People yelling at each other and wanting to argue like it’s some type of court room. Stephen A is another one I would rather never hear again.
I do over hear some of it with a tv they keep on in our break room.

Somebody has to be wrong! It's the new way of thinking.
A tree could fall down, hit a rock, send the rock down a hill and into a highway where it was hit by a car. If the driver died people would want to vilify the landowner that should have trimmed the tree, or the guy that improperly trimmed the tree. It never ends.

I deal with the public and you are correct in your assessment. Everyone needs to be right and if things go wrong it’s never their fault.

If you are asking if he could have Twittered something more offensive than he did... Sure.
That doesn't mean that the Twitter was appropriate.
Time and place.

I worked for a large aerospace company in Savannah for 30+ years before retirement last year. If someone in the department, hangar, program, etc. was hurt, injured or died, there was an outpouring of support, visits to the hospital, and sympathy cards. And work did not slow down one iota. I appreciate NFL Football is televised entertainment, but the show goes on. My take is the player has a genetic predisposition or prescribed/unprescribed medication is involved. Like all, I wish young Mr. Hamlin a full recovery.

His comments are a great example of...

... why you should be very careful about commenting on events that are unfolding in real time.
People get extremely emotional and ready to immediately react with their own opinions without knowing all the facts.
Bayless should have listened to Herm Edwards advice, "You can type anything you want. DON'T HIT SEND!"

Proof of the continued decline of reading comprehension little by little with each generation. Not a Bayless fan. I'm barely knowledgeable of who he is. But as an unbiased outsider, his tweet simply appears to narrate the reality of the situation in regards to the NFL and then state that it is all irrelevant in the wake of this incident.
Nothing to be canceled over or upset about. People these days seem to be constantly on the hunt for something to be offended about.
