Franks and Thompson have been crystall balled to USC. Looks like we're going 0 for 3 on the top instate Olineman. We can't continue to let this happen!

this is a non-issue. And I’d say also, show me the list of great OL this state has produced. Highly suspect these guys are overated based on competition level in this state. There is a reason our recruiting is focused elsewhere. 1)our brand is national 2) the talent level is better elsewhere

This argument falls apart when you realize we actively recruited these guys and they went elsewhere. Its not like we aren't interested because we're after bigger fish. We wanted them and got rejected for a program that's never achieved anything. To pretend it doesn't matter is very shortsighted.

No way to sugarcoat this one...not good. Like it or not Beamer is recruiting at a pretty high level. Frankly, aside from beating us and Tennessee, he hasn't done much on the field. There new OC hire is less than impressive. Nothing would be better than for them to win less than 6 next year. The you'll see who he really is...

Feb 2, 2023, 8:55 AM

The optics of this one don't look good. This is by far the best OL recruiting haul from South Carolina in decades if not ever. For us to whiff on all 3 is concerning. If you look up Pringle's comments from the day he signed with USC, he rattled off Thompson, Franks and several others that attended our Elite Junior day as individuals he wanted to personally recruit and bring with him. I have no doubt this is being orchestrated by coot coaches, there is a target drawn on the backs of our coaches and program. Losing to them has opened the door and gave credence to the crap they spew. Franks was a lock to use 3 months ago. Anyone who thinks this is business as usual and doesn't see the gains USC is making has a serious blind spot and those who say they will crumble as they have before, remember, this is a way more competent athletic administration and coach staff than they have had since the old ball coach.

Only one fix...we need to bury them next November. No mercy, bludgeon them into submission and then grind their faces into their home turf. Riley has got to get this offense going fast from day one and never let up. We do that and at least one will flip late in the cycle. While we are a national brand, we can't be losing the top recruits from our own state that we view as priority targets.

How are you not seeing it already? They went 2-8 before Beamer got hired. They've utilized the portal exceptionally well. They beat Clemson in year 2. They just signed their highest rated class in a decade. And their 2024 class will be even better.

They are arriving. In a hurry.

Feb 2, 2023, 9:47 AM

See what? That they won 8 games in his second season? Muschamp won 9. That they are doing well in recruiting? Seems to be. No proof that they will turn that into SEC championship or even more than 9 win seasons. Too many people jump the gun. Jimbo looked like a great hire for A&M and loom where he is now with Great recruiting classes.

Like I said let’s wait and see how he does. So far all I can say is he is recruiting well. One game Bad game by us does not tell me they’ve arrived. Slobber over them if you want but I’m not.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Instate Olineman

Feb 2, 2023, 10:57 AM

The difference between Muschamp and Beamer is the portal and culture. Muschamp couldn't use the portal to flip his roster like Beamer has done. And he's not a culture first type of coach like Beamer is. Comparing the two of them is pointless.

I like Thomas Austin. Blake Miller was a Freshman All-American. Collin Sadler is going to be a good player. I love the 2023 class because of their size.

It may just be that the 3 instate OL grew up South Carolina fans and Beamer has them believing. We'll still land quality OL recruits for 2024. We just need to recognize that South Carolina is trending way up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can only point to Miller, a freshman?

2

Feb 2, 2023, 11:32 AM

How about Putnam, Mayes, Parks, Linthicum, and Leigh, who were all four stars or better if I am not mistaken, and have yet to live up to their rankings?

So since we have Miller and a couple of additional four stars recruits, we don't need any of these three instate guys so no worries?

I wish I had your optimism.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We’ve done well with Putnam, Parks, & Mayes.

1

Feb 2, 2023, 1:21 PM

Putnam, Parks, and Mayes are all very good players.

Putnam’s first year at Center was stellar. He had not played Center before this year. I guess he’s entirely self-taught … surely without our coaching, he’d have entered the NFL draft and would be a lock for the #1 pick.

Parks started at RT as a true SO and played very well. He ‘took one for the team’ by moving to RG last year so that our bright prospect Blake Miller could develop at RT while having an experienced pass blocker to his left (e.g., Parks) at the RG position. Parks was credible (not great, but credible) at RG. He didn’t just get dropped on our doorstep being able to excel at both the Tackle and Guard positions. He has had some excellent coaching.

Mayes is a very athletic lineman who has played extensively at LT, RT, RG, and LG. Most of his play prior to Miami game was at Tackle, with his pass blocking being (favorably) noteworthy. When required to fill in for (injured) M.Tate late in the Miami game and then start at LG through the end of the season, Mayes’ play got better each game. Being able to learn quickly and improve quickly at several different OL positions just doesn’t take place entirely based on individual effort. Excellent coaching must also be there.

Who knows about Leigh and Linthicum? Both were RS FR last year and played sparingly.

I’ll admit to not having paid much attention to Linthicum when he got in there.

Leigh looks a little slow, but not bad. It’s really hard to coach ‘quicks,’ but if Leigh is able to earn time at any of our OL positions, then it will be due in large part to some special S&C work + OL coaching to get him to take better quality first-steps. Some players just take longer to get there; I am optimistic about what T.Leigh will accomplish here.

Re: You can only point to Miller, a freshman?

Feb 2, 2023, 1:48 PM [ in reply to You can only point to Miller, a freshman? ]

Putnam and Parks played new positions last year that they had never played before. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Linthicum and Leigh missed their senior year of high school because of COVID. That was missed playing time and missed weight room time. Both of them required more than a year to just get physically ready for the collegiate level. Leigh backed up McFadden, our best offensive lineman. Linthicum backed up Putnam, who's a pretty good player.

Also, Austin didn't recruit them. Shouldn't we wait to see how his recruits turn out before passing judgement?

It was not that long ago when Georgia started to kill it in recruiting. Especially at the O-Line position where they were recruited by Sam Pittman, and it seemed like they landed every single one we wanted. The pumpers were of course explaining how they had always out recruited us, and Kirby wouldn't do anything with the highly ranked recruiting classes. I think it is a huge disappointment we are missing out on 3 highly ranked instate lineman and shocked USuC might land all 3.

We have gotten guys from the Cootlumbia area, and all over the state, that grew up Tiger fans and were never going to the Coots regardless of our or their record. There are also kids that grew up coot fans and would go there regardless, so we can't be too upset that we can't make a lifetime coot fan all of a sudden want to come play for the Tigers. It doesn't bother me that we can't turn a coot suddenly into a Tiger fan at all. Do I wish they were Tiger fans ...... yep ..... but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Franks is a bit surprising especially being in Clemson's backyard but the other 2 not so much. Both Pringle and Thompson were known to be chicken leans. As far as Franks...maybe Clemson's depth chart is an issue for him, maybe he and his fam grew up chicken fans, maybe the new offensive scheme for the OL is turning him off, maybe it's NIL and that SEC money is finally benefiting them...i don't know but what i do know, is now more than ever it matters very little where a kid initially signs. Their best player right now is a transfer and when he's gone they'll have to try and hit on another transfer qb bc i don't think they've recruited that well at the qb spot.

Clemson has existed for years and had great success with mediocre OL play with premium QB talent and that's certainly Dabo's formula now. Boyd, Watson, Johnson, Lawrence, DJU, Klubnik, vizzina, and maybe white here shortly. Yes i know DJU and Johnson didn't pan out but both were a 5 stars and they were staying true to the formula.

I'm not a coach and have never coached but it's been said over and over by ones who have....OL is the hardest position to evaluate. Would it be great to have all 3....absolutely but at the same time Clemson has recruited well at the position lately if you go by star rating. The most annoying part is having to listen to the chickens beat their chest over this.

I thought about that too and you are correct. They lost a lot of talent with transfers. I just don't get wrapped around the axle about where a high school OL signs. Just never know how they'll turn out. All of the hand wringing over this is bc they're choosing the coots.

WAKE UP! It's all about the money. When you have a recruit say SC has a good engineering program and family atmosphere, you know it's money. NIL money. He will never play for a conference championship or a National title. We can get better talent and have from other places. When he said he liked their coaches better. Who wouldn't jump at an opportunity to play for Garrett Riley's offense. Major NFL exposure.

We wanted him, he didn't want us. Was all the way SCAR but on here, thought was he could be flipped. He wasn't. Went there and had a fair career and is in the NFL but was never on a state championship team in college (I don't know about Summerville). All was gloom and doom because Robbie Caldwell didn't get it done. Now the angst has been transferred to Austin, who, by the way, is good and evidently loved and respected by the players.

Re: Instate Olineman

Feb 2, 2023, 1:39 PM

This may explain things. Ranking Offensive linemen (according to PFF):

Tackle ranking:
Clemson 86 161
Georgia 14 179 253
SC 15 16 64
Fla St. 4 251 276
Pitt 3 121 268
NC 6 288
Syracuse 7 118 205
Wake 37 140 146

Guard rankings:
Clemson 227 287 288
Georgia 15 266 267
SC 67 263
Fla St. 152 162
Pitt 120 159
NC 117 118
Syracuse 84 228
Wake

So based on this, you would think tackles would want to go to SC and guards would not want to come to Clemson.

Centers rankings:
Clemson 3
Georgia 115
SC 65
Fla St. 4
Pitt 56 67
NC 71
Syracuse 53
Wake 54

Centers should want to come to Clemson or Fla St.

Tight ends rankings:
Clemson 6 211
Georgia 157 215
SC 18 41 212
Fla St. 95 222 230
Pitt 28 182
NC 4 184 226
Syracuse 224
Wake 93 131
