CFP Rankings

As much as I loved the thought of "win and you're in" when it came time for us to possibly make the top four in the final rankings and with the way things ended up with TCU losing but still staying ranked 3rd and OH ST getting in from USC loss, am I the only one that sees that we more than likely still wouldn't have moved ahead of OH St for the final spot in the rankings. There were teams that took losses that retained or moved up in rank while we were punished as usual for winning when we did. The eye test is crap when you are playing teams that only have 3 wins for the entire season. But, you can beat them by 50 points and that makes you a great team. Regardless of where teams ended up, we played more ranked or formerly ranked teams than we get credit for. And no matter how we do, there credit isn't given to us.It's hard to argue that if we were an unbeaten conference champion that we would have been in there. But, with the so called eye test, we would be quick to get put out by a one loss OH St because they look good beating middle school football teams!!!

You aren't the only one. I made the same point in a post a week or so ago. It would not have been a slam dunk that we would have made it if we didn't lose to SC, especially as subjective as those final votes can be in that committee room.
In my mind, it would have come down to a 1-loss Clemson and ACC Conference Champions vs. a 1-loss OSU who did not win their division or conference but who did beat the one team we lost to (ND). I know in the past they have given preference to a conference champion but given the weakness of our conference, being considered the 5th of the 5 power conferences, I still think they would have gone with OSU. There would have just been so many politics at play and of course, there is no way to know for sure.
We could certainly have pulled it out but I would not have liked our chances in those discussions behind closed doors and all of the media influence involved as well. None of that to me is above board and on the up and up.

I agree we would have probably been left out even if we had beaten the coots, unless possibly if we had blown them totally out like 82-24 or something like that. But I don’t think it was as much because of the ACC being weak as it would have been due to how badly we lost to ND. That kept coming up in discussion as a really bad loss and that is hard to argue. We just didn’t even get off the bus that night and I think the way we lost that game would have been the factor that would have kept us out of the playoffs even if we had beaten SC.

I was at that 82-24 Wake game. The Tiger was so tired from doing pushups all day that the Demon Deacon took over for him on our last couple of TDs

Yea. I was there too. The last TD was a long run off tackle by a RB that wasn’t even on the depth chart. Only time I’ve ever heard a stadium erupt in laughter.

Exactly, that was crazy. We were trying so hard NOT to score that it just became so funny when we did.

We didn't appear to belong until Cade stepped up. That happened too late to matter, imo.

puts Tigers in the playoffs. But that opportunity is gone. Tennessee is the next opportunity. Go Tigers! Stomp Rocky Top!

I would not disagree with you. Had they put Cade in early against uSC and he performed as he did against UNC it would have definitely changed the narrative.

SC game instead of UNC game we would be a 3 seed right now against Michigan. 4 seed at worse, but definitely ahead of OSU.

The thing is our schedule was pretty weak. We were favored in every game we played and I never felt like the committee had much respect for us by the way they were voting each week, i.e. keeping not 1 but 2 two-loss teams in front of us.
It just always felt to me like we were going to have to run the table to get in and that dream kind of died in South Bend.

No. One loss conference champ over a one loss nothing.

Ohio State would have beaten almost no one with a pulse. Penn State finished about the same as FSU. All their other wins were super weak and no conference championship.
One loss to a ranked ND on the road would not have kept us out.

Then why is it that even though we kept winning after the ND game, the committee wasn't moving us up in the rankings? We just kind of treaded water in the rankings until the SC loss. I understand your logic but logic never seemed to be at work in the committee votes week to week which is why I say I really doubt we could have trusted them to vote the right way at the end.

ND was also a common opponent. Ocry0 St beat ND and we had a very bad looking loss to ND. It would have been and interesting (and probably heartbreaking) discussion but when we lost to the coots we ended the discussion before it got started.

If we dominated Coots like the first half started...

Then I think we would have bumped someone out, probably O310 since Michigan won the B10. But TCU could have dropped as well, but we needed a good dominant game to jump persons especially with our Conference Championship
