Imagine that you are chosen to fix the Coots' football program.

It's an unenviable task, I know. But you're supposed to make it a consistent winner to contend for conference championships and hopefully be a participant in the 12 team playoff.
As we know, the program has an overall record of around .500 throughout its history, just one conference championship decades ago, and a division title in 2010.
You are in charge of a football program that is typically mediocre to bad, in a conference with several football powers, at a school best known for women's basketball and equestrian (though a rabid football fan base).
More success in football is desired, and you have been tasked to fix it. How do you do it?

Great response!
Or, do what Rick Barnes did. He accomplished more in a shorter period of time, in the same role. Here. At Clemson. In basketball. Without these facilities.

The Sweet 16 team was great, but otherwise we were one and done in the other two NCAA Tournaments. Our 97-98 team was very disappointing after lofty preseason expectations. We had our core group of players back that year, including Buckner, McIntyre, and Jamison.
Rick did a nice job injecting some energy and excitement into the program, but he knew that some lean years were ahead so he bolted. Shyatt had McIntyre for his senior season but not much else.
I do think Rick is a great coach, the best we’ve had in fact. But his tenure is frequently overrated by revisionist historians here.

Nice try but we’re not the coots.
You could easily set up the same scenario with BC Football or any number of other college sports teams who have been very average to below average for the majority of their history.

Sure. Hire a Hall of Fame coach out of early retirement
6

who isn't afraid of a program's poor history, or the ho hum condition it is currently in, and has the belief and chutzpah to go out there and make it happen, knowing their skills and leadership will make a difference because of how impactful excellent coaching is. SCar's program is well enough resourced in their field and conference to allow for success with the right components, similar to the state of Clemson's basketball program. See Spurrier, and Holtz before him.
Then when that HOF coach starts showing signs of petering out, have someone other than your former baseball coach who knows little about running a major athletics program make a replacement hire accordingly.
For example, Brad's program has a Top 40 budget yet averages a 75th-place national finish each season. Clearly a significant underperformance that happens like clockwork. His recruiting is decent with classes averaging in the 30's, yet he continues to produce seasons that are twice as low as that in final rankings.
Dabo on the other hand, even in a miserable horrible no good season like we just experienced where we were barely Top 20, his worst finish since 2010, with only a Top 25 program budget continuously and relentlessly produces a winning product year in and year out that performs better than its weight and enters every season in the running for championships.

They did it with spurrier. He proved it could be done. The problem is spurrier screwed them and left them hanging when he basically quit and stopped recruiting leading up to that 2015 season.
If I were a gamecock fan I’d be even more bitter knowing that Spurrier proved it could be done.
First thing I’d do is let Tanner go. Then maybe hire someone that knows what they’re doing.
Also I don’t care what fan base you are talking about. SC, NCST, Miss St, Kentucky, etc… I would always demand we strive to be a top 25 team. History be ######. Just keep firing and hiring until you land that once in a lifetime coach that can change a programs trajectory. Dabo is the perfect example for this.

Being top three in the country with multiple 11 win seasons isn’t the kind of success they expect? That will get you in the 12 team playoff these days.
If I were a gamecack fan, being consistent top 25 would make me happy.
And as I said I’d keep making new hires every 5-6 years until I landed that once in a lifetime coach that can change the trajectory of my program.

That’s a fair question and obviously I’m not Graham Neff or Ray Tanner, so my talk is very cheap… but I think if you’re in their situations you need a proven commodity with name recognition and a track record for turning around broken or historically sub par programs
Do you think if Tanner had a shot at Saban he’d turn him away? Because I think he’d pay him $13m and figure out where to find the money

i started in 91 so i missed the Duo of Doom.. but.. Ellis was at 532 (4 years) Barnes managed to get 607. ( 4 years) Shyatt was 455. (5 years) Purnell hit 600 (7 years) Brownell is at 581 (12 years)
I didn't pay much attention when Ellis left so i'm not sure of the circumstances.
barnes supposedly had some off the court issues so i think he would have bolted no matter what.
Shyatt just couldn't get the job one.
I wonder what Purnell could have done with the Millions that Clemson has sunk into basketball over the last decade.

I would start by doing SOMETHING.
3
Feb 5, 2024, 2:52 PM
|
|
The last thing I think I would do if I were the Gamecock's AD and the mandate came down to improve the performance of the football program is to fold my arms and say "Well, Beamer hasn't given me any indication...over a long period of time...that he has the ability to improve the performance of my football team...but other options I could try also might not work...and people can point out reasons why they won't work...so I'll just accept where I am."
That seems like a recipe for disaster.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the "up and comer" hire...in my opinion, it's got marginally less chance of success as a hall-of-famer hire (a la Lou Holtz), but comes at a significantly lower cost, with more runway, and a coach who might have a sense of appreciation for the opportunity such that they won't jet if they have a couple strong seasons (assuming you then pay them after those good seasons, of course). That's what we did, and now we have a 15-year tenured head coach who is the winningest coach in Clemson history, with two national titles, eight ACC Championships, and 12 post season wins...who could be our head coach for another 20 years. That's amazing. Compare that with UNC's hiring (er...re-hiring) of Mack Brown. Undoubtedly he's doing well (by their standards) there, but no one thinks he'll be the coach there in four years.
Anyway...one of the interesting things about sports fandom is it isn't necessarily all about wins...sometimes it is about hope. As a Gamecock fan, you'd have to get tired of watching years and years of the same thing with the same results. You'd want SOMETHING to give you hope...a new hire...anything. Someone with great recruiting skills or who looks fired up on the sidelines. Someone who goes toe-to-toe with Saba...er...Smart...Maybe someone who comes in with a unique culture that the Gamecocks can latch onto.
So yeah...that's what I would do. (For the record, I'm not saying that Beamer can or can't get them there...I guess I'm operating on the premise that they have years of mediocrity with him and it isn't changing.)
