I'm not necessarily part of the DJ sucks crowd

Nov 1, 2021, 1:32 PM

Obviously, his two starts last year, particularly against ND, were outstanding. The kids was stellar in HS and did really well when he played last year. He has the talent and the skill - when he either is far beyond the competition like he was in HS or he has a stellar cast around him like he had last year with TE9 and all of our receiving corps. Dabo was no idiot in recruiting him. But there are always those intangibles of how they'll play at the next level. You see it in the NCAA and the NFL. 5 stars or 1st round doesn't mean anything once you get on the field against similar competition. Once the field is leveled, then you really see what a kid has.

In my extremely unqualified opinion, DJ has the skill to make some great passes, but doesn't have the acumen to manage a game, make the reads he needs to make in the split seconds required, and is easily rattled. Last year he was surrounded by veteran leadership. This year he's supposed to BE the veteran leadership, and it's hard to lead when you're struggling and having confidence issues - which he clearly is, though he'll never admit in a presser.

Give him an open man and plenty of time and he's generally a great passer. Put a blitz in his face and some reasonable coverage downfield, however, and he disintegrates. Now, I think, as our OL has shown itself fairly incapable of giving him good protection, he stares down his receiver of choice because he can't adequately manage all the data coming into his head when you are looking downfield at the receivers and the coverage, and looking at your blocking and the defensive rush - all done in just a couple of seconds.

I think Dabo would pull him more frequently if he thought TP or HH were up to the task, but it's a bad sign that they're not expected to be better or even equal to DJ's performance to date.

Gonna be very interesting to see what the future holds for this young man and for our QB position overall. I hope the best for him - I truly do - and trust the coaches to make the best decision with the tools they currently have to choose from.

I got the impression from his post game interview that in certain cases he is supposed to go to a certain place with the ball and isn't always at liberty to check down to other options. I'm sure that isnt always true but he is not a defense reader and find the open man guy. That may come later but he is pretty restricted at times now

I dont know, just asking

Nov 1, 2021, 2:12 PM

But was his decision making limited to predetermined reads or did he go thru progressions in his 2 starts last year?

I don't know either, but I think he had better blocking and more time last year, as well as veteran leadership around him. Particularly, he had TE9 back there blocking, running, and likely encouraging.

I read the article where a former player stated it was pre determined. Elliott alluded to that earlier in the year when he said " they were going to simplify the offense i.e., set predetermined plays like they did last year..." Then DJ said that in his press conference. So, yes.

Not uncommon for a young QB but he's had 10 starts now and a lot of mop up time last year. So imo, he's not so young anymore.

It’s not that they won’t allow him to check down, it’s that he is way behind in terms of reading a D so basically he does not know how to check down to a better play

He’s still only a true sophomore and people develop differently. In his first game as a starter, he went up against what could be one of the best defenses of the last few years with an OLine still being moved around too much to gel. Plus, lots of injuries and moving pieces.

You watch, things will hum with a more consistent supporting cast, and he settles down.

DJ's first game as a starter was against BC, and his second game as a starter was against ND, and he done a great job in both those games. His 3d start was against Georgia, and in that game he must have gotten hit pretty hard bc, now he acts as if his heart fearful of playing the QB position bc, he looks nothing like the QB we saw in his two starts last season!!!

It’s different when you have Trevor Lawrence there than when you are THE guy. Georgia was his 1st game as Clemson QB1, without TL, and youth at RB and the OL has had an impact as well after losing ETN. ETN helped DJ too.

Clemson could run the table next year with DJ, those skilled RBs with another year, and that Defense, nobody knows.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he doesn't process information very well

Nov 1, 2021, 2:07 PM

i've still not seen him run and RPO where he made the correct read. I don't think he understands what he's supposed to do. I think he has his mind made up at the snap and he's going to do that no matter what. If they're going to continue to trot him out there i hope they eliminate the RPO and just do timed routes and play action instead. Something where he can practice timing and hitting a sport. This way he knows where he's going with the ball (WR or Check down) after they break from the huddle. The RPO game just isn't in his skill-set. Anything where he's reading the play in real time isn't going to and hasn't worked. From what i've seen i know he's a good kid and has a big arm but needs to be in an offense that works for him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He is not a dual threat QB...

Nov 1, 2021, 2:32 PM

He is a pro-style QB so the RPO never was and currently isn't ideally suited to his skill set.

I agree with you that he tends to make-up his mind where he's going with the ball before it's even snapped. Unless and until the game really slows down for him, go with timed routes and play action instead.

Question for all you FB guru's. Would you not continue to be patient with him this year, learn our rpo , or try to since this year is already what it is.

Especially knowing what we have coming in January? Just seems from Elliott and Dabo, we're sticking with our scheme? So see if he can manage it and if not, turn it over to Cade. ?

Re: He is not a dual threat QB...

Nov 1, 2021, 2:55 PM

I'm no guru, but I'd certainly continue to be patient with him. Lots of great QBs had very bad starts but their coaches stuck with them, or another coach believed in them, and they turned out to be outstanding QBs, sometimes Heisman and Super Bowl winners.

I don't know that I'd say he's getting better each game, but he's certainly not getting worse. His improvement is nominal, but it's still improvement. Just gotta quit the stupid mistakes and the offense has to call plays more suited to him. I think, too, with the running game finding it's footing (pun intended) that that'll help him and take some pressure off.

Not a certified Guru...but I have slept at a Holiday Inn so

Nov 1, 2021, 3:37 PM [ in reply to Re: He is not a dual threat QB... ]

IMHO - As mentioned elsewhere the RPO is not suited to DJ...he does not have the quickness, elusiveness, or decision making capability to run it. Watching DJ try to run the RPO is painful, it literary appears that the play is in slow motion. On the pick 6 in the Pitt game DJ looked like he was in quicksand on his weak attempt at a tackle.

I think it best for TE, Dabo, etc. to adjust our play calling to better suit his abilities...which it seems we have been doing. It certainly would also help if our WR/RB would eliminate the bad drops. Not going to mention the OL...they do seem to be getting a little better as does the offense as a whole.

I believe we are looking at a legitimate QB battle when Cabe gets here. All that being said I hope that the light switches on for DJ and that he becomes the QB we all think he can be.

^^^ this ^^^

Exactly why imo, that Elliott has taken as much heat and criticism as he has this year because they tried to plug and play instead of installing something in the spring.

This is a pretty fair assessment

Nov 1, 2021, 2:53 PM

I was really hoping DJ would lit it up as the year went on but I think it's looking more and more like this is it for him. Maybe he can get better next year, idk. He hasn't really improved since week 1. I thought he had a pretty solid first half against FSU, but obviously a dreadful second half. On the interception, he stared down the receiver the whole way then lobbed up an underthrown ball into double coverage. Just can't afford that when the offense has to scrap and fight for every point. Feels like every drive is a struggle.

Nov 1, 2021, 3:33 PM

I'm not qualified to make any judgement on DJ's performance, however I do have one question: is it me or has the coaching staff not pointed out the telegraphing issue? Every snap, every single person watching knows exactly where he's going. So with 7 games to see a difference, is it that the coaches have not addressed it?...or they have and its not sinking in? I get that he's stressed from a weak OL letting guys through and maybe rattled...but I would think it would be fairly easy to at least pretend to look around the field all the while keeping your eyes locked on the target? Again, i'm not qualified to state the answer...thus why I'm asking.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very fair assessment...I think the game has not slowed

Nov 1, 2021, 3:44 PM

down for him...not sure it will. Have to play call to suit his talents and capabilities. I think we've gotten a little better each week but there is no confidence in our offense. The last few years when the O hit the field no one wondered if we would get a first down...we wondered how quick we would score. We got spoiled.

Just hope we can continue to grind out wins...a win is a win is a win...no matter how ugly.

Re: Very fair assessment...I think the game has not slowed

Nov 1, 2021, 4:08 PM

We're not asking DJ to win games. We gave up on that. We re asking him to manage games. Run the ball get us into 3rd and short, make a simple throw. Don't turn the ball over, burn the clock. Maybe we take a shot every so often. Probably another close one this weekend. Kickers got a hit. FG are part of the plan now.

DJ is at best a serviceable backup, he is just not going to be that big star at this level. After a couple more years he could be a KB caliber QB.
The worst part about this whole deal is that right now he is the Best QB wearing a Clemson jersey.

Excellent summary
I am concerned that the psyche of the defense is going to suffer. They have been propping up the offense all year. BV has done an above and beyond job of keeping the guys ramped up. I hope it continues.

No, Clemson defense gave up over 40 points to ND in the first game. Not so much in the second game. You can say DJ lost to ND, the team did...

and stares at one reciever the entire play. The entire stadium knows where he’s throwing. I lost count of all our receivers that were open on plays and never got a look.
