5* receivers

Jun 22, 2022, 11:55 AM

I just saw Ohio State landed their second 5* receiver in the last couple of days. We have certainly had solid receivers in the past but they typically are 4* recruits. We have had no problem over the last 10 years landing 5* QBs which begs the question of why we seem to have so much difficulty landing 5* receivers to go with them.

Any thoughts?

Chances of landing a 5* might be a bit low right now but to a few things. Question marks at QB, new OFC, NIL etc. I think last year was an anomaly. No program that has that many injuries will have success.

It just seems odd that we can attract the #1 rated QBs in the country like Trevor, DJ, and Cade yet no 5* receivers come along with them. In fact, when I look at our prospect lists, I rarely even see a 5* that we are going after. That just seems like an odd disconnect to me and I wondered why that might be the case.

It’s easy to look at stars and just think certain guys are going to pan out. Clemson has their own recruiting analysts that determine who they need for our system. Don’t get too caught up in the star power, anyone who is rated as a four star is a superb player that has tremendous upside and we develop better than anyone.

That's a fair point. I would just think when the best-rated QBs out of HS are coming our way we might also see a few 5* recruits want to come and play with them. Not every 5* lives up to their billing for sure but most of those do tend to be fairly successful at the next level.

I feel it all boils down to fitting into Dabo's mold. I can only imagine a lot of these 5-star players have big heads and want to be in on every play. Of the 107 offers we have currently given, only nine are to Wide Receivers. Many of them have No-stars.

I agree that some of current players are looking at DJ's performance last year and during the Spring game. While I'm hopeful he corrects his mistakes and becomes the players he was two years ago, we do have Cade waiting in the wings. I also feel our current WR's will step it up this season.

Dabo has a plan, believe in it.

"Odd disconnect"

Jun 22, 2022, 12:45 PM [ in reply to Re: 5* receivers ]

We've made it work just fine.

We know why the passing game struggled last year, but quality receivers hasn't been an issue at any other point in the CFP era. It's not like our WRs have suddenly fallen off - it was one year with a QB who had trouble hitting the broad side of a barn.

Nil is the reason right now. The teams paying the most are getting most of the top 150 players. We have had a good run of late but most are in the 200 and up range.

We haven't fallen off in recruiting.

Re: 5* receivers

Losing Scott definitely hurt us in this area. However, I am actually encouraged with Grisham. Getting Randall and Williams I believe will turn out to be better than most realize. Will certainly be disappointed if we don't get Rogers or Williams in the 23 class, especially after losing Joseph. However, he seems to be building some strong relationships with some 24 guys.

On the other hand, RB is more of concern for me. CJ is one of my favorite Tiger players of all time. I have met him a couple of times and was really impressed each time I met him. Puzzling to me he has not connected with recruits better and closed the deal on a guy or two. Heck, Louisville just got a commitment from a 5 star RB.

I agree with you on both counts. We seem to be knocking it out of the park on defensive recruits this cycle but RB/WR/OL are concerns from where we are right now. Maybe that improves as we move into the fall.

Jun 22, 2022, 12:36 PM

in so many recruits' minds. Looking at the scholarship makeup of the team(https://www.tigernet.com/view/scholarships/football.do
), we have youth at wide receiver and upperclassmen at DL and DE.

Louisville also paid that RB....

Upwards of 3 million for his recruitment to the Cards.

I'm not crediting Grisham for Randall and Williams

Jun 22, 2022, 12:45 PM [ in reply to Re: 5* receivers ]

Both of those guys were coming to Clemson even if you or I was the WR coach. Williams wanted to be a Tiger for most of his life, but didn't have an offer until late in the process thanks to Grisham having him further down our WR board. Grisham has not yet shown the ability to assess, retain, and develop a high level WR that didn't already bleed orange as a youngster.

You're trying too hard.

Jun 22, 2022, 1:42 PM [ in reply to I'm not crediting Grisham for Randall and Williams ]

Grisham has been WR coach two years. He's brought in (5) top 20 receivers in 3 years and another is top 40. That's (6) top 40 receivers, (6) of the very best in the country.

In year one with Grisham as WR coach, we had the most productive passing game in Clemson history. In year two, we dropped below 100th in passing due to poor QB play.

There's no way you can truly back up anything about Grisham's tenure, other than he's signed (6) top 40 WRs, he's coached the most productive receiver corp in Clemson history, and he was handcuffed by QB play and injuries.

Those are the true facts.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, it didnt. We've signed (3) 5-stars

Jun 22, 2022, 1:25 PM [ in reply to Re: 5* receivers ]

in the entire CFP era: Deon Cain, Tee Higgins, and Derion Kendrick. Exactly one of them ended up actually playing like a 5-star. That's one legit 5-star WR in 8 years? And suddenly the sky is falling?

We had ONE bad year from receivers in the CFP era, and that's mainly because of a barely functioning QB and a myriad of injuries.

It is not like we were signing a bunch of 5-stars, and we've suddenly lost our ability to get top notch WRs.

...Nothing to see here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No, it didnt. We've signed (3) 5-stars

Jun 22, 2022, 1:38 PM

Nobody said the sky was falling. It was simply a question about if the top QBs in the country want to come to Clemson, as they have done consistently over the last few years, why wouldn't more of the top WRs want to come and play with them, especially if their future goal is to play on Sundays? It just seemed like a contradiction to me and I was curious what others thought.

Point taken.

Nov 26, 2022, 5:28 PM

Do you understand my point that nothing has slipped, and we've won two national championships and have the 2nd most wins in the playoff era, and recruiting has not fallen off? Point is, we're doing just as well at WR as we always have, and we've had by far the most successful run in program history with the same level of guys. I'm not sure why we haven't signed more 5-star receivers during this amazing CFP era, but it could be because we haven't really offered many of them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Point taken.

Jun 22, 2022, 1:59 PM

I do get your point which basically is that not signing many 5* receivers hasn't hurt us and we have done just fine with very talented 4* receivers. And I agree with you. Hopefully, you get my point that when the #1 or #2 rated QBs in the country are consistently heading to one school over the last few years that one might wonder why you don't see more of the top-5 rated WRs wanting to follow along to play with them.

Yes, both LSU and OSU had crazy talented receivers and with Burrow and Fields throwing to them, it made for a bad combination for us in those playoff games.

Humphries was solid but not a difference-maker. At Clemson, he averaged about 40 catches per season but only about 250 yards per season and only 3 TDs over 4 years.

Hunter, on the other hand, is a beast and freak of nature!
