The top of the 9th lets leave in Grice instead of bringing in the closer? The Vols had seen Grice pitch for 8 innings. Isn’t it more important to win the game vs. a complete game by Grice???

I got ya. You meant let out closer start the ninth….
Mehhh idk the bullpen has been so shaky and the way grice gave up 2 hits weren’t bad. The last hit came on 0-2 and dude barely got by Bertram. I just don’t think you could see Tenn barreling him up. He prob would’ve gotten the next guy out. Hell Ammons got ahead 0-2 on em but because he’s only throw one dang pitch all the time now the kid was ready for it. Grice would’ve had 3 go to pitches 🤷🏻♂️

Throwing 92 mph fastballs every pitch will result with the ball in the outfield seats (or over them). In Ammons defense, the pitch to throw doesn't get on his wrist band by him.

I think what Clemson SC is saying is Grice was over 90 pitch cnt after 8. We're up 4-2. We shouldn't have brought Grice back in, and I completely concur. I was shocked when Grice came back. It's been working well with Grice and Lindley or Smith. Maybe Smith wasn't available but even with Ammons, bring in to pitch the 9th.
Tennessee has been a hr hitting team all year. Ammons Achilles is giving up the dinger. But once you make the decision to give it to Grice, then let him finish it.

One of the __________ (fill in the blank with ‘beauty’, ‘mystery’, ‘charms’, ‘faults’, yada yada yada) is Monday morning quarterbacking and second guessing coaches/players decisions. And there were a dozen or more of those last night.
(PS: Who’d a thunk after #23 loaded the bases with some horrid pitching that he would get three outs and keep us from scoring? Talking about a head scratcher for their coach to leave him in - AND IT WORKED?!?!)
To me, that is the absolute beauty and the excruciating agony of sports. And although - at 69 years old it did cause me lost sleep last night - I’m not as bad off as I was 30 or 40 years ago…. maybe before I die it might not bother me as much. But I don’t know.
Sigh…..
and GO TIGERS!!!!!

Glass half empty because many people would say the Vol hitter would not have hit the homer over the roof against the slider Grice would have thrown him. No need second guessing.

Wrong. It's really not complicated. Grice, nor Ammons should have pitched in the 9th. It's really an easy decision for coach and he hinted at it in his presser.

Sorry. I thumbed up the wrong post. You got that one on accident. I do not agree with your post. I would have left Grice in with 2 on and walked the bases loaded. Easy call when I know the outcome. But I’m not the coach and not even qualified to Monday morning QB.

Walk the bases loaded??????? Then you move the tying run in scoring position by doing that. That would’ve been a dumb move. Regardless that was a tough game to lose. It hurt so much because we were SOOOOOOOO close to victory on multiple occasions. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

Ammons came in to close it, gave up the homer and then a walk before being pulled. Maybe that is why he stuck with Grice. I've seen several posts questioning why Grice wasn't left in to finish it. We know what didn't work now. If EB knew the outcome then he would have made a different decision. He didn't so we are trying to fight through the loser's bracket like I believe 7 other 1 seeds.

Tn had put 2 good swings on Grice the whole night. That is why he started the 9th. Didn't have anything to do with Coach wanting to get Caden a complete game. He gets 2 quick outs in the 9th and then allows two baserunners. I don't fault coach for sticking with Grice in that spot. I can see not going to Ammons, but he has been the closer since returning. Ammons gets 2 quick strikes on balls throwed up in the zone, then instead of going after the hitter, goes 2-2 on him. Keep in mind, the hitter has seen 4 fastballs in this at bat. The 5th pitch, another fast ball, is down and in and the hitter jumps on it. Last night baseball was cruel to the Tigers. I hated to see the game end the way it did, but sometimes, that's just baseball. Not looking good, but it's not over for the Tigers either. Get'em today!

Don’t forget that their catcher was horrible at throwing out people stealing ALL year and we’ve been amazing at stealing all year but last night night he threw out a few of our guys stealing with absolutely PERFECT throws. Last night was extremely frustrating because tenn literally snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. It was unbelievable how tenn managed to win that game. They had everything go their way after the top of the 9th with 2 outs. We were 1 out from victory and then had 3 different chances to walk it off but just couldn’t do it. It was EXTREMELY frustrating. I would love nothing more than to win the next 3 games to win the regional. I would be extremely proud of this team but regardless of what plays out I’m still proud of this team for turning the season around. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

He got two quick ground ball outs and was 1 out away from a CG. It's not like he came out there in the 9th and was laboring. He had plenty left in the tank to finish the game. Unfortunately, their 5-6-7 hitters killed us all night and did so again there.
If there was any argument at all to pull Grice it was maybe that last bit, but really yall are just analyzing this already knowing the outcome and letting that cloud your judgment. If Grice gets the 3rd out absolutely nobody here is criticizing the decision to leave him in.

Looking back it would had been ideal because Ingle could had went catcher, Snick right and Grice first putting out pitcher batting 9th.. but Grice was dealing last night and he probably could had completed the game if left in.

I think Grice should have came back out. And to be honest I feel he could have won it if left in. He got 2 quick outs. Then gave up 2 hits. He had 2 strikes on both hitters. He was still doing good in the 9th. He might would have gave up 1 run but I do not believe he gives up a homer. I think we win 4-3 if he stayed in.

He did. But I would have took my chances. Just wouldn’t have thrown him any fastballs. The slider was Grice’s best pitch yesterday.
