Reality Check...

Reading through this forum, there appears to be a lot of support for Clemson joining the SEC. That is perfectly fine. I support that too. But, I am also reading a lot of delusional thinking. It seems that a lot of Clemson fans think that if Clemson joins the SEC, they are just going to jump in and take it over. This is not going to happen. the SEC (more now than ever) is loaded with power house teams. Clemson will get a crash course lesson in the difference between a nothing conference, with mostly easy teams to beat up on, and playing a really good, top team week in and week out. There is a big difference.
Again, I think it would be great for Clemson to join the SEC. I think they would fit in better there than the Big 10, but just don't expect to automatically get in their and own the conference. Clemson is going to be put through the grinder, like every other team in the SEC, and they are going to have to work hard to have any success in that conference.

What gauntlet. Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Florida, Tenn., Arkansas, Ole MIss Miss State? There is no reason to think that Clemson would not crush all of these teams every year except for down years like last year.
Also, do you remember what happened the last time a team joined the SEC? Missouri dominated the East for at least two years, and they were one of the worst teams in the Big 12.
Yes, Clemson's offense was down last year, but in the last 8 years, they have been one of the top 3 football teams in College Football, and recruiting is actually picking up right now.
Do I think Clemson will win a Championship every year? No, I don't but I think the SEC would the same as it always was, just one more predator like Alabama in the mix.
The SEC is basically 1 great team, 3 or four really good teams, and then everyone else.

You think Clemson, if they went to the SEC would crush teams like Ole Miss, Arkansas, Miss state, and Auburn? That isn't going to happen. I am not saying Clemson wouldn't win those games, but you aren't going to crush them. They will all be tough games. Arkansas played Alabama down to the wire last year, and lost by one touchdown. It came down to an Onside kick.
So, none of those games are going to be easy, 'give me' games, my man.

I think Clemson is powerhouse of football team, and I Think they have a good chance of doing well in the SEC, but I don't think it will be easy. All of the teams in the SEC, with the exception of Vandy, are pretty tough teams. Some are expected to be really tough. Most of the top coaches are in the SEC right now. I would love to see Clemson in the SEC, I think they would fit in, but I have a feeling they are going to end up staying in the ACC for some reason.

3 different SEC teams have won the NC in the last 3 years. 5 different SEC teams have won 12 of the last 15 NCs. 4 of those were all SEC NC games. The SEC has filled 36 spots in the BCS/CFP.
2 different ACC teams have won 3 of the last 15 NCs. The ACC has filled 8 spots in the BCS/CFP era.
To say the SEC only has one great team each year is simply not backed up by the numbers. That is a perfect description of the ACC however. The two teams that played for the ACC title last year routinely sign recruiting classes ranked in the same ballpark as Vanderbilt. Wake, Pitt, and NC State would be bottom feeders in the SEC. If you need further proof, bottom feeder SC beat UNC by 18 last year. There is a reason the ACC is on life support and the SEC is booming. Clemson would absolutely compete and compete well in the SEC, but they would not be a shoe in to play for the conference title in the SEC like they are currently in the ACC.

That is what I was trying to say. You said it much better than me, and had the numbers to back it up. The SEC are loaded with really good teams. It isn't just Alabama and Georgia than everyone in the SEC sucks. Most of the teams in the SEC would probably go undefeated or close in most other conferences. But, I also agree that Clemson would be a great addition to the SEC. They certainly are a good enough team that they belong in one of the two top conferences. They need to ditch the ACC.

Agree with all but, Clemson and Bama have been the two teams to win more than one Natty in the past 8 years you're speaking of, and that places Clemson as a top 2 with Bama, and maybe Bama edging out the #1 spot by a small margin!!!

Oregon Samford @SCAR Kent State @Missouri Auburn Vandy @Florida Tennessee @MissST @Kentucky Georgia Tech
This “grinder” label, while *sometimes* true, is not an acceptable blanket description of the SEC, nor is “SEC speed,” “SEC size,” “SEC power,” etc. It’s a lazy generalization.

UGA's schedule certainly isn't a "grinder." Contrast it with Clemson's schedule and honestly ask yourself which is the easiest path to a playoff spot. That's the point. If that's not enough, there is no Bama for Clemson to contend with at the end of the season. It is true that Clemson has been a powerhouse program. It's also true they have benefitted from an ACC schedule.

Try to keep up. This is about the “week in and week out” gauntlet that sec teams face. Your narrative is old and worn out.
Also, chances are that we end the season with bama anyway.

Here is Arkansas' 2022 schedule.
Cincinnati South Carolina Missouri State Texas AM Alabama Ms State BYU Auburn Liberty LSU Ole Miss Missouri.
Now THAT is a grinder. Arkansas always gets hammered with a hard schedule. However, The one you posted, I assume is Georgia's schedule, didn't look too bad.

That really think we would move in and take over the SEC??? Delusions but all the teams are not good. There are many average teams in that conference so we would not be playing very good teams every week as was already posted. I would love the opportunity to play those teams on a regular basis. Not skeered.

I have never been one to say we would come in and do anything. Definitely a bigger challenge no doubt about that. Not sure who the OP may be referring to but they may have been talking to someone that knows little a about college football or has sipped on a good bit of bourbon.
I am a believer that things are never as good or as bad as they seem.

Alabama has pretty much dominated the conference the past decade so anything is possible. A pretty good indication is watching coveted recruits leaving the state of Al and Ga. for Tiger town. Some of us can be believers!

take over the SEC is what is called a strawman. It's the imposition of a question into a conversation by which one presents a fictional supposition.
It is actually the working of a simple and simply dishonest mind. However...
If Clemson was in the SEC we would be underdogs by media talking heads to Bama and UGAy. Our prospective games against those teams would often decide a division championship.
While I would not consider that taking over the SEC I suspect SEC teams would view a game with Clemson early in the year as a benchmark.
I do not want Clemson in the SEC. I do not want Clemson in the B1G. I don't even like Clemson being in the ACC but I agree with Dabo, "Bloom where you are planted."

While the ACC has been relatively easy the SEC East has been a been almost as easy to get through. Switch Clemson and GA the last 7 years and outside of 2017 and 2021 Clemson would have made the SEC championship and had to take on Bama or LSU. Which we know how that would have turned out in 2019 and 2020. We’d have lost. But 2015, 2016, 2018. We could have still won a NC. I say 2015 because that was an extremely close game that could have gone either way.
But now that the super conferences are developing no team will be going through those schedules unscathed. If they add Clemson and Oklahoma to the East for example you are talking about an extremely tough schedule. SC, Kentucky, Missouri, and Vanderbilt will never sniff success again.
But I sure hope no one thinks this new SEC is will be like the old one and I hope no Clemson fan think we going in and go 12-0. 9-3 or 10-2 will more than likely be in the SEC title game.

against the methods and visions of Dabo Swinney, who built this behemoth of a football program not worrying about all this mess. If he thought like many on this board do, he’d have jumped to the SEC as a coach after he got his footing and experience in his early years at Clemson.

Clemson would only benefit
Jul 10, 2022, 8:35 AM

from joining the sec and would be more likely to make the playoffs as an sec member. Right now the only schools in the sec that compete at clemson’s level are uga and alabama. That’s it. Nobody else is close. Clemson’s odds of winning the sec would be equal to those two schools’. And, as past years have shown, you don’t have to win the sec to make the playoff. Basically just beat one of those teams in a season, take care of the average teams you get every other week, and you’re in. Or lose to an average team and you still might get in. The argument that clemson has benefited from a weak acc is just sec homerism. Maybe a middling sec team is marginally better than a middling acc team. Maybe an sec cellar team is marginally better than an acc cellar team (maybe not). Bottom line, clemson has been head and shoulders above all but a very very few programs over the last 7 years. Marginal differences between sucky suck teams wouldn’t have changed anything.

So, basically, you are comparing Clemson to Alabama and Georgia. You feel like, in the SEC, it would be Clemson, Alabama, and Georgia as the dominate teams? Well, I hope we will find out. I am pulling for Clemson to join the SEC, and then we will get to see what kind of a Coach Dabo really is.

I am not a Dawg troll. I am actually not a Troll at all. I follow the Arkansas Razorbacks as my team, but I am a fan of College Football in general, and I am taking great interest in what is going to happen with the shift in conferences right now. I would love to see Clemson in the SEC with my Razorbacks. Anytime we played you guys, it would be considered a benchmark game. I was just making the point that some Clemson fans seem to think that Clemson will just jump in the SEC and make it their #####, and the SEC is not easy for any team, especially now, it's even tougher than it use to be now. All the teams, except for Vandy, are pretty salty right now.
