I thought he was gonna be the guy. I am happy he's onto something different and I truly believe he will be a great program changer for OU.

Grateful for a head coach who is willing to do hard stuff in order to keep climbing that mountain.

The proof is in the playing so the jury is still out on Allen but I am loving what I am seeing so far!

Go TIGERS!!!!!

p.s. for all of you Wes G haters: dude is a football savant; just didn't have the stuff to be a great DC in this era of CFB and at Clemson.

I don't doubt Wes was a brilliant analyst, but he was completely in over his

But really not suited personality & high energy wise to lead a D during an intense game scenario..Nor am I.

He had a great 1st year for stats but sank steadily last 2 years..so give him thanks and great success at OU.

His second year was better than its first year. The first year they were 19th and Total Defense in the second year they were 8th and total defense.

Seems like he’s a good X and Os guy and really knows defenses but knowing it and teaching it are two different things. I just don’t think he had the experience to be a big time DC, he could def learn from this and become a good DC but I think his spot is up in the box helping the actual DC, think he was very good at this with Coach V.

I hoped he would be the guy, but realistically anyone following BV had some high odds stacked against them. Also figured that the support network he had under him with Eason, Reed, then Rumph would help maintain the intensity that Wes G didn't exactly bring himself. Continuity I know also played a role - keeping in place the architect behind schemes and approach that had been so successful for us. It worked pretty well for the first two seasons - our D didn't lose us a single game that I can recall - and we continued to bring in our normal group of Dudes. But when it caught up and the wheels fell off - ouch.

Happy we've all resettled accordingly. Onward and upward!

I’m not sure he’s proven anything except he is obviously a great analyst for CDS and CBV to believe in him. That’s probably what he is and where he belongs. It’s not a bad gig and probably more suited to his personality and skill set.
Remember, people said Rob Spence was an Offensive genius too. How’d that work out?

I had my doubts the first time I heard him speak publicly. He sounded so nervous and never really got much better in that regard. I gave him a chance though, but we just could never stop the run with him even vs weak competition. I do wish him the best though. He was paid well and now he has another solid job and a great life. I hope thrives and grows.

I will admit I was never sold on Wes. A guy who never played on any level, but was being sold as he was uniquely blessed with some vast amount of football knowledge, like a miracle child? Sorry I just didn't fall for it. Especially when you try to pass him off as trying to be a leader in a room of D1 football players. It appeared his credentials were somebody said, that somebody said, that another guy said that he is a defensive football genius. Nah...just didn't sound right to me. Maybe as an analyst to breakdown film OK but to hire him as a DC? Expecting him to lead a group a A1 personalities? It's not like he possessed a physical presence that commanded attention in a room. It's nothing against him personally but I knew from the beginning this was the dumbest decision ever. Being a leader requires presence and a resume that inspires others to follow you and have a proven track record of getting results. It's the equivalent of getting a gun designer, whose never shot a gun or fought in battle to lead a platoon of infantry men into battle. Like I said nothing against him personally but I knew from the beginning this idiotic experiment was doomed to fail from day one.

Dabo made a terrible decision here and it cost us dearly and set us back years . You can’t be a D1 coordinator at Clemson having never played. Down of college football. Not only that it is so obvious he doesn’t have the demeanor or personality to lead a defense at this level . This decision cost Clemson and this was a boneheaded move by Dabo .

Rob Spence was an offensive genius, some say a mad scientist, it just didn’t work out at Clemson. I’ll be shocked if Wes doesn’t have a long successful career similar to Rob.

... one of the essential traits of a good coach is the ability to motivate the players.

I coached HS football an JUCO basketball (both volunteer and at a low level). I understood what the heach coach wanted me to teach them. I could explain what I wanted them to do. I could impart the information. I cold even explain to them the reason they should do it. I could explain to them how this would make them a better player and make the team a better team.

But, I couldn't convince them to put forth the effort to do it.

I explained to the head coach of the HS football team, "They want to play, but they don't want to play better."

For whatever the reason, I suspect Wes had the same problem. It wasn't his understanding of the X and O stuff. But, it appears the problem was his ability to convince the players to put forth the effort to excel in what he was explaining to them to do.
