If you’re a top HS QB, why wouldn’t you want to play for Riley?

Dec 11, 2022, 2:16 PM

3 Heisman QBs (Baker, Kyler, Caleb W)
1 Heisman runner up (Jalen Hurts)

Incredibly impressive.

Yes and now that he is in LA at one of the most important football programs of all time, you are absolutely correct.

Idk maybe some value a national championship rather then an individual award, well maybe not much these days but he should definitely always have a top QB easily

There are only 5 active head coaches who have won a NC (Saban, Dabo, Jimbo, Smart, M Brown).

Nearly all of Riley’s teams have been in position to play for one.

He will win a national championship. I’m guessing he’ll win a few.

Same reasons the best coaches don't want to coach with him...the Heisman trophy is kinda like the NCAA now a collection of popularity contest for a QB who can't beat Utah...twice!

Even if that's the case, it's not debatable that winning the heisman guarantees you a high draft stock. His QBs have not only all gone onto the NFL (and most are pretty good), they've been picked near the top of their class.

Charlie Ward would have been drafted and probably would have had a nice career, but he made it clear was not going to play in the NFL and went to the Knicks He went later in the first round and played for 13 years in the NBA.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was almost 30 years ago, a QB with Ward's skill set

Re: If you’re a top HS QB, why wouldn’t you want to play for Riley?

Dec 11, 2022, 2:58 PM

Agreed. Esp the way college football is now, in LA, NIL provides significant opportunities for QBs and skill position players at USC. I can’t see a reason why they won’t have a really good offense every year. There will still occasionally be really good QBs who don’t want to be out there (ie Arch Manning) but his system, it feels like Riley will mostly have his choice of who he wants for QB1.

Is that why the covid death rate in California is so much lower than it is in South Carolina and the rest of the South (and almost every other "red state" for that matter)?

They do seem to be doing something right. Maybe it's just that they aren't as fat as Southerners are, or maybe it's the fact that affordable healthcare is so much more accessible there.

Geez, "face diapers"? Another one of those Fox "News" tropes. Masks have saved lives. It's a fact but it's doubtful that's important in your world...

Southerners already didn't live as long and had health issues, more obesity, more drinking, etc. They were just more susceptible to having complications. Thas my guess at least.

Hard to think of any. Why many won't is where he's located. LA isn't for everyone, or their parents. For others it's the bomb.

I am going to answer your question specifically, because he won’t develop you. With the exception of Williams ( who he did recruit) every other person you listed was not recruited by Riley out of HS. They all started somewhere else.
If you are a transfer QB, I would have Riley at the top of my list to go play for. He has a great track record of Heisman winning transfer QB.
He has managed to have all these Heisman winners and has never been able to get over the hump and win a Championship.

Now that they've basically legalized what Carroll was doing when he won a championship there it makes sense that they can now be contenders.

If you were a top high school QB and Riley signed you, you'd have to change schools at least once to play for Riley at his next school. And if he takes the pro job he wants, you'd have to just hope for the best new coach who comes along. And if you didn't win the HT as a freshman, you'd have to transfer anyway. Those would be my guesses why a HS 5 star would not sign with Riley.

You could ask Arch Manning why he didn't sign with Riley.

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 12, 2022, 6:10 PM

When is comes to pushing talented QBs to perform at their highest level, nobody has a record close to Lincoln Riley.

It's insane he's coached two consecutive Heisman winners (that were transfers), both of whom were the #1 pick in the NFL draft. This year, he has yet another Heisman winner who would be the #1 pick, if eligible.

SoCal is a factory for high-level QB talent and he should always have a top talent at starter and backup each and every year.

That all said, you have to ask if Lincoln Riley is balanced enough to lead a team to a championship. He has no problem recruiting top notch QBs, receivers, RBs and O-linemen. But, his defenses lack toughness and physicality.

I think he'll get it done in the next 5 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't win championships

Dec 12, 2022, 6:22 PM

Because he doesn't believe in defenses.

Most QBs want to lift up the Heisman trophy. All QBs want to hold up the National championship trophy!
