You nailed the two games I was going with. I was going to say the punt return by Deion and the TE touchdown by Alabama.

There seems to be a lot of agreement here. The punt return by Deion Sanders is the first play that popped into my mind.

It is curious to me how many folks focus on the onside kick or the long touchdown to the tight end. I find the key play in that game the 2nd quarter interception. I think if we just keep doing what we had been doing, we drive and push it to 21-7. I think that Bama team did not have the firepower to play catch up.
To the original question, the plays I change are: 1. Puntrooskie. 2. The aforementioned interception. 3. Play where Kyle Parker is speared vs Auburn.

My first thought was Aaron Kelly doesn’t drop the go ahead TD against Matt Ryan.
But then maybe TB is still coaching and we don’t win two National Titles.

I'd have to take the Bama onside kick, because I feel that one essentially directly cost us a Natty. We still had most of a hard season's work to do in 1988 even if Puntrooskie doesn't work, and we had beaten the Criminoles.

B/c idk if the team would've done what they done had they escaped with a win. After so many close calls & finally get burned, I think the Pitt loss refocused everyone & helped bring out the killer instinct we saw the rest of the way that year.

but I wouldn’t change it. As hard as that game was to take, it was a catalyst for some of the change that got us to where we are. While I like the two choices most commonly posted (puntrooskie, Bama onside kick), I might not change them either, I’m given the chance.
To go back and change either of those plays would be risky, as it could change everything else that came subsequent to them. So if I were going to change one play, it would have to be from the last couple of seasons. Maybe in NCSU game last year.

I think that was the game Charlie slid too early and left us at 4th and inches. Otherwise it’s first down and we run out the clock. That must be how the whole “Clemsoning” thing got going.

Assuming it wouldn't change anything about our 2016 and 2018 titles I'd also go with the Bama onside kick. 2nd place for me may even be the kickoff return they had for a touchdown or the 2nd and 12 play Bama had from their own 23 with 4 minutes left where they swung the pass out to Howard who ran for a gain of 63 yards. Had we been able to make them punt in that situation then I fully believe we still win that game.

Their defense was not stopping Clemson at that point in the game. Saban knew that. (Clemson wasn’t really stopping them either….banged up and out of gas)
Flipped a possession. Put the scoring advantage on their side.
Won them the National Championship. We would of had a great chance to win that game otherwise.

1). Clemson vs Alabama 01/01/2018 Kelly Bryant gets hit while throwing to an open WR and it ends up an INT returned to the Clemson 27. Apparently the coachs say there was a guy wide open for the Touchdown if the ball gets off so that would put us up 13 to 10 in the 3rd quarter. They only managed two first downs after that point in the game, so a touchdown there likely wins us that game, hopefully we perform better against Georgia for the Natty. Would have given us 3 straight national titles
2). The 3rd and 19 LSU converted before half to then go up 2 scores in Natty. A stop there would have given us the ball at about midfield with over two minutes left and the chance to take the lead going into halftime. With the 3 and out and then touchdown to start the second half we would have been the ones up 2 scores.
3). 2021 - NC state misses Extra point in overtime and we win the ACC Atlantic and with the way we were playing to end the season probably the conference.
4). Aaron Kelly catches the ball against BC in 2007 "we believe!"

That the LB had intercepted the pass before the Puntrooskie or that someone had covered Stanley Morgan on the hidden play in 74 at Tennessee. Or that the half back pass was intercepted in 84 before Coots drive down to score and win the game.

Defense kept us in the game, was only down 6-10. Offense was starting to come to life...had that drive ended in a TD, that's a whole different ball game & our boys probably would've put another chink in the Alabama/Saban armor.

Doesn't answer your question but for a meaningless game, I'd say that GaTech blocked punt near the East endzone and they then beat us one or two plays later with a TD catch to Calvin Johnson. Should have never lost that game, all we had to do was punt. Nealon Greene days it was I think.

Actually, the punt wasn't blocked. The snap went over the punters head allowing GT to take over on a short field. On our offensive drive before the punt Whitehurst had a run on the 1st down play and he slid down just shy of the 1st down. All we needed was 1 1st down on that drive to run out the clock and win the game. We ended up with 2nd and 1 and weren't able to get a 1st down which set up the punt.

Somewhat off the grid, a couple come to mind:
At no. 1 fsu in 2014. Oh so winnable even with an easy td pass not executed, and even with a db falling down that allowed a td, and even with a td overturned on replay. If we don’t high snap the ball over Watson’s head while inside the fsu 5, I believe we score and win the game.
At Georgia in 1980, another game we should have won but for Scott x?!*{# Woerner. I’ll give him the punt return, but the interception and long return was a killer. Clemson was about to score, and that play wound up being a 14 point swing. Could’ve been a whole different season for both teams without that play.

Any of the numerous big plays to OJ Howard.

I still have nightmares about that.

UGA always win with these fluky plays...just give me one of these back:
1984: Kevin Butler's 60 yd FG (still a tie with this removed but life in Georgia was miserable during the following year) 1982: Blocked punt for UGA's only TD (take this away, we win 7-6. I believe this was Dale Hatcher's only blocked punt during Clemson career) 1980: Already mentioned - remove Scott Woerner and that eliminates their only 2 TDs (punt return and pick 6) 1985: UGA fumbles into endzone late in game only for an offensive lineman to recover for TD. Game probably still ends in 13-13 tie even if Tigers recovered that one. 2002: Make David Greene stay in for whole game. We were dominating them when he was in. When they switched to DJ Shockley, we couldn't stop them. Or we make our FG on last play of game - force OT. Not sure if Tigers pull it off but often wonder. 2003: Move kickoff against UGA from noon to 8pm. I'm confident the game is vastly different with an electrified Valley after tailgating all day.

That 2003 game against Georgia was probably the most miserable

one I’ve ever been to in terms of weather. It was so freaking hot for that noon game. Plus that was the game Bowden promised to establish the run. I think we averaged about a yard per carry. LOL.

Those two were painful. Another one that ticked me off was the Georgia Tech game (can’t remember the year). The game was all but ours, until we botched the late drive culminating in snapping the ball over the punter’s head.

Mine goes back a few. Tyler Hellams TD punt return in 1968, the coot beat us 3-7

They were on about our two yard line and we’d made a terrific goal line stand to preserve our 3-0 lead.
Then we ran three very conservative plays that gained nothing once we got the ball and we punted from the back of our end zone.
Hellams fielded the ball at about the Clemson 40 and ran it in for the points we’d just denied them a few minutes earlier.
This capped a pretty disappointing 1968 season.

You don't tug on a loose thread of a garment, because the whole thing might unravel. I like the way things have gone for Clemson. Every disappointment and every victory have made us who we are. Go Tigers!!!

1. KB’s pick vs Bama, when we were driving to take the lead. We would have crushed UGA in that title game, we matched up so well with them with their strength being the run game and our run defense that year, seems like it would have been similar to the Miami game.
2. Onside kick vs Bama.

If the LB had made the easy interception on the previous play, there would have been no Puntrooskie. That's the play I would change.

Anyone remember the Clemson center hiking the ball over the punter's head 1988 NC State. Cost Clemson the game.
Any of the second half fumbles against Georgia 1984. Clemson absolutely dominated the first half and played like the game was over in the second half.
