I think if he is gone at this point I think 2 things are happening or have happened.

1. Clemson wants to wait for him to announce his new job because they don't want to fire him because it is negative press. Frankly it looks better for Clemson to lose him to another school than to fire him and admit that we suck on defense.
2. The above is true and they have asked Goodwin to keep it on the down low until they can announce the Clemson replacement at the same time rather than to go through even more negative press that will impact players decisions. If that replacement is known and is still activitly coaching in the CFP or bowl games it will be after he is done. Everyone is waiting in that case.

If #2 is true it is unlikely that our next DC is a current DC, but an up and coming guy that everyone knows is ready for a big DC move.

That said, we probably get Josh Conklin from Wofford...just sayin' Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

I don't think it looks better for Clemson to let Goodwin leave. It's better for Clemson to be like "Yes, we made the playoffs and did okay, but at Clemson, we expect national championships, and we believe the right person to bring that trophy back to us is X." Players want to know a coach is going to make hard decisions to make them winners. That's the best option by far.

It's also silly to pretend that he left of his own accord. People have called for his head all season. The media has covered this heavily. Once it's announced, the first thing ESPN will be doing will be explaining that he was told to leave and will be discussing how badly the defense has regressed under him.

I think there are two things happening here. I do think they want to announce the coordinators together, so there's no uncertainty on the players' part. And I think it would be easier for Goodwin not to have a firing on his resume, so it helps him to be able to announce he's going to another school, even if everyone knows what happened.

The problem with your hypothesis is that in the vacuum of information, the press, the fans, other coaches, players all start to spin their own conclusions. Many will ill intent towards Clemson. It’s better to be upfront and bold.

Even David Hood has stated that Wes is gone. With Dabo being out of town I’m sure the delay is in vetting, hammering out a contract and all that. I’d be very surprised if we don’t already have our guy and are just waiting on red tape and CDS to get back in town and have a press conference.
