If it turns out that Banks is the next DC....

.... here is a general statement that I have seen be true more often than false. I've noticed this over my decades of watching football.

My thought used to be that a DC who is also the DB coach would be a coach with the philosophy of "Bend, don't break. Protect my DBs. Don't let them give up the big plays."

But, I've found the opposite to be true. DCs who also coach DBs tend to be the most aggressive. They tend to be the guys who are willing to put the DBs under the pressure. Lot more putting a corner on an island.

I've heard all of the following things said over the years by DCs who also coach DBs. (These include Nick Saban, but go back years before him.)

1. The first thing you have to do is shut down the run.
2. The second thing you have to do is pressure the QB.
3. A DBs best friend is s ferocious pass rush.

Venables was a LB coach, but he certainly had this philosophy. Nick Saban certainly had it. Mickey Andrews at FSU coached DBs, and he certainly had it. Kirby Smart certainly has it.

Even in today's spread and wide open offenses, priority one and two still have to be the same.
1. Stop the run.
2. Get to the QB.

DB coaches seems to understand that very well.

Well said

I agree with the DCs you named. For the younger guys that didn’t get to see Mickey Andrews defenses sure missed out

Mickey would look like he had rabies. Drool and spit everywhere. He was a wildman.

Honest question… but why would banks leave tenn for Clemson … I get money talks but tenn has plenty of it to match also. Just seems like almost a lateral move at this point unless he just would rather work for Dabo over huepel which I completely get .

Agree. We have done neither this year. Statistically this was Clemson’s worst defense since 1975

Worse RUSHING defense since the 2-9 season in 1975.

Is this true? When was Danny hired? The next season?

Exactly. Even the best DB’s can’t cover forever.

Bobby hired Mickey from Florida.

Mickey is a Bama grad. I didn't know he ever coached at Clemson.

Mike Reed is not going anywhere so he will still be the DB coach.
