He has 2 seconds to make a decision.

Hand off, pass it or keep it.

3 seconds and he will be sacked by a Bama or UGA defense.

would rather see him practicing with guys

he will be throwing to this season

Doesn’t matter who he’s throwing to if his mechanics need fixing

We sure weren’t fixing it here ..

He absolutely has the talent, just has to get the mental side figured out.

No one in his face...his release is not the problem but making quick decisions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah - the RPO split decisions are the 1st problems.***

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I am anything but a QB guru. But, to me that looked like a long wind up to me. When his left hand came off the ball his right arm actually dropped a few inches. I don't know if that is normal or not. But, the tip of the ball (as he was taking it back, the tip was pointed slightly down) was just a few inches above his waist at its lowest point. It seemed to me like hw was carrying the ball lower than I am used to seeing, and then dropping it on his "backswing."

Reiterate: I am no guru. I could be totally way off base.

Just giving my - very admittingly - uneducated opinion.

I expect a bunch of replies telling me to go back to Tallahassee and I am not welcome here. I hope I have earned enough credibility from some of y'all that you understand I am not slamming Clemson. I would love for DJ to win the Heisman next year, leading Clemson to a national championship with a 14-1 record. I would love to be wrong about my analysis of that throw.

No way your a first class guy, wish all opposing fans were like you. He definitely can shorten the wind up as well but it’s snapping out of his hand. With his physical tools he can be one of the greatest just has to work on the small things

No worries, bretfsu®, with some regret I've got to admit that, as a non-Clemson outsider, you're one of the more astute FB posters on TNet.

Reading your post and subsequent responders, I'm both concerned and optimistic. (No I am not running for political office, despite the weasel-like flip-flop comment.)

(1) We've seen highly successful QBs with non-traditional release points.

(2) We've seen highly successful QBs with traditional release points.

(3) Very rarely (but seemingly more often these days ... especially with RPO type QBs) we see successful QBs with dubious footwork.

If DJ's not-quite-traditional release point had not been associated with his erratic passing performances in the first ~ 60% of 2021 season, then I'd be more optimistic about the rate at which is is progressing towards a top QB. But if his release remains 'untraditional' and he doesn't perfect his footwork (and he's not a spectacular enough athlete to be accurate when his footwork isn't right), then 2022 might end up being a sequel to 2021.

But as an admittedly proud sunshine pumper, I'm optimistic that Streeter's coaching will get DJU squared away with regard to technique, and DJU will then dazzle everyone with that Hollywood arm. I mean, whew, that guy can sho' nuff toss the piggy.

Glad that it wasn't just me. I thought it looked more like a pitching wind up than a football motion. If he improves his accuracy, I really don't care how he throws, though. He has the arm strength to cover up some flaws. He seems to be a hard working young man, so I think that he will be much improved. Time will tell whether that is enough.

Looks like the same old DJ release to me, too. Pretty big wind up, but he looked quick and relaxed in this clip, as one would expect with no rush. I still maintain that DJ's problems were beyond mere mechanics last year, and there's more to the story than we'll ever know. I respect that, and I'm fine with that ... I just know that the true freshman I saw on the road at ND or at home against BC showed none of the problems we saw saw this year, and I think it's possible we may see that "old" DJ again if whatever mysterious problems he was having get ironed out.

Agreed - looks like a long "wind up" to my uneducated eye. But the feet look 1K times better than last year. I wish DJ all the best and hope he shows each week he is a top level QB.

I'm just glad he's out there at least trying to work on his game and get better. Considering how he got dragged through the mud by the country and our fan base, I know a good percentage of people would have given up. But this is one thing I wanted to see him do this offseason, to get some outside training. Keep it up DJ.

Is Clemson on some kind of break in classes right now? This was take in Texas so I’m just curious. Hope some of our WRs are there as well.

I don't care how quickly the ball jumps out of his hand.

I hope he doesn't have a permanent case of the yips. Goodonya DJ for getting extra work.

When you consistently overthrow your open receivers, something bad is happening--consistently:
A) the receivers are underrunning their routes every time (unlikely)
B) QB is shortstepping--needs a longer stride to allow more downward rotation on his follow through
C) QB is shortarming--stride is fine but he is intentionally releasing early and not following through

Frankly, I think he's still recovering from the GA game. I think he learned some wrong lessons. This off-season is critical for his development, but chief among them is to get back to being comfortable in the pocket. There's no need to rush if you know where everyone is going to be.

Wish him the best with improving. It’s hard to erase what I saw last year. Hopefully the decision making and accuracy greatly improves.

The receivers need to also catch the ball. They couldn't

Feb 21, 2022, 6:50 AM

catch squat last season. Worst I've seen in a while.

What comes first the chicken or the egg? Mechanics are important and I have no doubt it helps with accuracy but to me he better get better between the ears. Learn what your receivers like to do, learn your opposing defenses, understand a plethora of defensive concepts, get timing right with “your” receivers. These QB coaches do good for some fine tuning I believe but when it comes to the fixing all the other stuff it comes down to film study and practice with your guys. Rep after rep after rep. JMHO

Re: If DJ keeps this quick release, opposing teams are in trouble

Seems to me that DJ's problems are not in his arm, but between his ears.

Coaches would do well, I think, if they limited DJ's mental pressure by calling more designed runs and designed passes instead of RPO. Use play-action to get some misdirection, but DJ will know he is passing and can think about only his receiver checkdown and potential pass rush. He would not have to think things like "If that safety crashes down, I should hand it off but if that linebacker slides to the right I should..."

I feel like offensively we improved later in the season when we established a solid run game, which seemed to me to be called runs vs RPO more often than not. And passing improved similarly when DJ knew he was passing.

Re: If DJ keeps this quick release, opposing teams are in trouble

Feb 21, 2022, 7:54 AM

Let's do a quick comparison of teams that are in trouble shall we. Last year we opened in Charlotte versus UGA. DJ was 19-37 for 178 yards and had the pick six that sealed the game. Week 3 we held off Ga. Tech 14-8 with DJ throwing for 126 yards on 18-25 attempts/ completions.
Neither were stellar performances ,to say the least.
This year we open at a neutral sight( although in Atlanta) against Tech, and while the Jackets are not the Dawgs, it is a conference game and therefore makes for a more significant performance.
Either way if there is not this quick release, or if he falls back into old habits, well we could be looking at another 10 win season.
So let's hope he not only improves his release time, but also manages to work through his progressions, and to deliver a catchable ball. And against a defensive line, not on the practice field with no pressure.

Oh if DJ fails to improve I wouldn’t say we’ll see another 10 win season. I think that he’ll lose his starting role and be in the transfer portal faster than you can say transfer. Klubnik is going to be good. I have no doubt. I think we are looking at the very least an 11 win season but more than likely a 12 win season with another ACC champ

Although improved, the young man is still has remnants of a baseball windup in his throwing motion. Keep after it DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IF DJ greatly improves

Feb 21, 2022, 11:18 AM

It will be because Klubnik and Johnson are putting the pressure on him. AND this will happen starting in a few weeks. The Tiger offense will be vastly improved with the QB situation that we have now. Assuming no one gets banged up this spring. Of course the receivers need to improve also. Collins will be a super star in 2022. I am hoping that the new OL coach makes a difference too.

Spring ball is going to be fun.

IMO he throws flat footed. Watch all the great ones, they are slightly bouncing on the balls of their feet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe I am in the minority here....

Feb 21, 2022, 11:33 AM

but I am proud of DJ doing everything can to improve and if that means going to Texas than sobeit.

Hard to tell from the video but the ball seems a little bit wobbly to me still. I don't know how important it is to always have a tight spiral but I'd rather see it than not.

I was critical of DJ's play last year. I know people want to make a million excuses but he did not play well. I rewatched the Wake game the other day and a lot of his passes were just off without any pressure. He was having the same issues all year.

I think he can get better though. I am pulling for him. I applaud him for seeking help and working hard during the off-season.

On a more positive note, it looks like he has dropped some weight so that's a great sign to me. Go DJ! Go Tigers!
