I certainly don't try to read people's but you guys want to always judge a coach or a player on the bad rather than the good. Brownell is a winner and this team is a winner as evidenced by the fact they set a school record for ACC wins. By a stroke of bad luck, our next 2 games are on the road against 2 of the best 3 teams in the ACC at places that are tough to win at. The season has been great despite a near bottom of the league projection. Is that mediocrity?

What exactly does this mean?......

"Brownell is a winner..."
I hear that type of statement a lot...........most of the time it's in discussions with that coach's lack of success. It's a blanket statement that seems to speak more to the coach as a person rather than his success.
You hear it a lot after coaches get fired........"ah, he's a winner, he'll land on his feet somewhere"
btw I'm not advocating for or against CBB b/c like many other Clemson fans, basketball "is what it is" at clemson and will always be 4th behind football, football, & football.
If we keep Brownell we'll probably see much of the same............If he's fired we'll probably see much of the same from a success standpoint.

Seems others here email him all the time. They get canned responses - probably from his admin/EA - but “he” will respond.

Doubt he goes anywhere. His team just a school record for conference wins in a season. Doesn’t matter how strong or weak the conference is, it’s now in the record books.

This Tiger team is near the top of the league and has set a record for most ACC wins, which will grow before season's end. The team should be improved next year. I don't see Neff making a change nor should he. Go Tigers!

seems like the way to go is let the man make a decision. Then comment or criticize accordingly. This anticipatory drivel is about as meaningful as the bracket bogus projections

Re: I have enjoyed watching this team!

This is the best Clemson "team" I have seen in a while and I really do enjoy watching these guys play with some degree of emotion but with some poise at the same time. They run good plays and don't wait until the shot clock gets to 10 before trying to do something to score. I hated that crap and not even getting a shot. All that being said, what the hell happened at BC and Louisville? It seems that there is no "plan B" when the 3's are not falling or Tyson is covered up and not able to get the ball or a shot. I agree that Clemson basketball is not, and never will be consistently at the top of the league in BB but we need to take a breath and enjoy some successes and progress in the program this year and not hope for some "white knight" to come in and turn us magically into ACC elite. If Clemson can maintain in the top half of the league consistently, what more do you expect from a "Football School"?

That's the goal. Neff, like fans, EXPECTS to make the tournament. This directive is clear.

I think he has probably done enough to be retained but I don't think he has done enough to be extended. He should have a better team next year and he still has 3 years left on the current extension so I would wait another year and if the team does well then they probably extend him at that point and if not, then maybe they are in the market for another coach. Either way, I think he is back for at least another year.

The key is the buyout, not the 4th year on the contract
Feb 23, 2023, 11:27 AM
|

coaches need the 4th year for recruiting. But the buyout needs to be left alone or dropped. If he balks, let him walk.
He needs to begin reaching the dance, period. That could still happen this year and then we're talking a different type buyout and contract. But if we miss it, and do so again next year, we have to be able to part ways at a reasonable price. 14 years and 3 tourneys would certainly have to be enough you'd think. Every coach since Foster, when the tourney was fewer teams and far more difficult to get into, apart from Shyatt, has a much better percentage of making the tourney that 21% of the time

I agree with you on everything but needing to extend him so he has 4 years under contract. I don't think that is required this year. He still has 3 years left and the way players are coming and going, that 4th year is not as important as it used to be. If we keep him for another year, I would wait and see how the next season goes before extending him. The only legitimate reason to consider an extension now would be if someone comes after him and then Neff has to decide if he wants to extend him to keep him.

I know a lot of people want to believe that but I have to look at it with a sense of reality. If we split the next 2 games and beat ND, we will finish no worse than 4th in the regular season and if we win our first game in the ACCT, we finish no worse than Top 4 in the tournament. With 23 wins, a record 14 in the ACC, and a Top 4 finish that was pre-season rated no better than 11, I just don't see any way that Neff would move on him, NCAAT non-withstanding.

Mediocrity?
In my humble opinion, the reasonable expectation for men's basketball for a decade has been nothing.
This is why I stopped following or attending games ten years ago. With any pressure, Brownell and his team's have a consistent tendency to freeze up, be it an important game or a critical moment in a game. I read a Brownell comment on a recent loss that his team "had panicked" so it looks like things remain the same. Neff will own it IMHO.

If retained it would be for monetary reasons. No reasonable fan can honestly justify any other good reason for keeping an average coach.
Won 12 in conference. Well let’s find out how good the ACC is come tourney time. How many do they even get in.
People are not hating they just want to find out if things could possibly get better than they currently are. We were picked to finish 11th in conference but UNC was also pre season #1. How has that worked out? So called experts are guessing just like everyone else.

We have 6 teams with 20 wins or more and anecdotally, I kind of feel like at least 5 of those will get in.
