Basketball PG question.

Is Justin Porter a PG. Also, is our.starting OG position already decided? It seems like we have options.

He is more of a combo guard but Coach Brownell likes having two of those. Chase was that way and so was JZ. Dillon is more of a PG but has shown flashes of scoring as combo guards do.

We seem to have 5 nice CG's. This team is looking to be our deepest team maybe of all time.

Dillon
Porter
Zac Foster is supposedly a CG
Buckner is a CG supposedly
Butta Johnson? I think he is more of a 2, but is he a CG?

If Foster can replicate his production at the Power [insert whatever it's called now] level, this team is better than last year. It's also likely better than the Elite 8 team. Every incoming player meets or exceeds the departing player.

D. Hunter 2025-26 (should) > D. Hunter 2024-25
Foster maybe = C. Hunter
Wahlin > Wiggins
N. Davidson > Schieff
Welling > Lahkin

Bench also looks deeper.

It's somewhat difficult to predict what we will see from freshman though it is likely that he will see a decent amount of playing time. And any comparison of Foster to Chase Hunter would inquire to which year of Chase Hunter's you are equating what you would expect Foster to produce. Chase did not have the best first two years (relative to his own standards) as he acclimated to the college environment. A good goal, in my opinion, would be for Foster to have similar production to Chase's 2022 year.

Additionally, I would caution to assume that this team as it is currently constructed projects to be better than last year or the Elite 8 team. If we compare the production from last year's outgoing players to the incoming team using an efficiency measure that computes the points over replacement per adjusted game at that usage, we have the following where higher measures indicate greater efficiency:

Clemson (Outgoing):
Chase Hunter - 4.3
Ian Schiefflin - 4.1
Jaeden Zackery - 3.3
Viktor Lakhin - 3.0
Chauncey Wiggins - 1.4
Jake Heidbreder - 1.2
Del Jones - 0.5
Myles Foster - 0.5
Christian Reeves - 0.2
Total Efficiency Outgoing: 18.5

Clemson (Incoming):
Nick Davidson - 4.3
Jestin Porter - 2.3
Carter Welling - 1.8
Jake Wahlin - 1.8
Efrem Johnson - 1.2
RJ Godfrey - 1.0
Total Efficiency Incoming: 12.4

Summary:
1) In terms of bigs, we have very similar comparison of production last year from what has left the program (either through graduation or transfer portal) to what is coming into the program.
2) I would be cautious to argue that Welling projects to be better than Lakhin. Welling averaged slightly more blocks on average than Lakhin last year (1.7 vs. 1.5). However, Lakhin had a pretty decent mid-range game around the free throw line, particularly when the play would break down. Welling's performance has roughly remained the same the past two years so it will remain to be seen if he will improve significantly higher in efficiency than what he has already done.
3) Our biggest difference in efficiency is currently in our guard play, which will have some question marks in terms of improvement from this year to next. Here is a hypothetical to that question though:

3a) Dillon Hunter's efficiency (approximately 1.5) last year mirrored Chase's efficiency from the 2022 year. If Dillon has a similar improvement in efficiency that Chase had from 2022 to 2023, then Dillon will improve the team's total efficiency by an additional measure of 1.2.
3b) If comparisons of Zac Foster to Chase Hunter are accurate and Foster is able to produce similar to Chase when Chase was a productive player, then it would be safe to assume that Foster could produce similar to Chase's 2022 year and add another 1.6 in efficiency.
3c) While not a guard, it is not exactly seen what the ceiling is for Wahlin. He had a significant improvement from his freshman to sophomore year. If that trend continues, it would add more to the projected efficiency closing the gap more between efficiency measures from last year to the projected team next year.

They have done a good job of replacing what has left so far. I'm interested to see if another guard is brought in, in which case, I would feel comfortable assuming that they could be as productive as last year's team. For now though, I remain cautiously optimistic.

Dillon and Buckner will likely be the base PG's

but like with most of Brad's teams, 3-4 different guys will be capable of initiating the offense.

This is going to be the most interesting year for Clemson basketball in a long time. A lot of unknowns, but also, I think, a nice collection of talent. Likely going to take time to gel with so many guys in a new system. I sure hope we do have an overseas trip on the schedule over the summer. We need to time to build chemistry both on and off the court.

Exactly. Getting that chemistry, deciding who gets minutes, and getting them to thrive will be pretty challenging I would imagine. It's the most fascinating season coming up that I think I have witnessed. It's wild. How will be CBB put this puzzle together? It's going to be fun. He definitely has the talent.

I bet some of the attraction to clemson is that with dillon here, he can more of a scoring guard rather than a PG. from the brief highlights i have seen, he seems similar to chase hunter as far as athletic ability. He's probably a little quicker

size will keep him from being the volume scorer that Chase was, but can be 12 to 13 point scorer at least. The bigs he has to work with will give him a lot of open 3s.

It's a good situation where we can discuss the multiple options and talent we will have on next year's team. I am also interested to see how we use the last open spot. Perhaps a scorer at the 3 or best available or who knows.

Probably just a back up type wing or big if anything. With no walk-ons can't have to many regular players with 15 spots.

I'd be surprised if we added anyone else of consequence

2 open roster spots likely to go to "walk on" types who will get a scholarship. I can see 2 of the incoming freshmen redshirting as well barring injuries. No one is playing 13 guys

Yes Steinhour and Davidson's little brother are going to be the type redshirts this year. Maybe 1 more to go with those guys.

I don't think they are going to redshirt because if approval for 5th season eventually goes into play then the redshirt is ending except for the medical type.

I would like a back up C. If 2 bigs get into foul trouble, we need somebody who can play C besides godfrey.
