Past reformed critic of Brownell

First off, if we lose Thursday, I will not rest blame solely on him. They are a decent team with a great coach. They played teams we lost to, to the same general effectiveness.
Anyways, all of that to ask this question. Why does nobody ever want Brownell? You cannot think in all these years if he is the amazing coach that some feel that he is, why doesn’t anyone take a run at him? Indiana didn’t even wait
Again, I am fine with Brownell now. Before last season, I wanted him gone. He seems to have found a winning formula now and the teams are more equipped to not have those painful long scoring droughts from the past.
What do you think is the reason? Go Tigers and just win 5 more games!

I think Clemson fans who don’t get on Tigernet are perfectly happy with Brownell. T-Netters are skewed because of Judge Keller. His constant defense of Birownell when the situation warrants frustration by Clemson fans, combined with his obvious disdain for Dabo makes people on here lash out at Brad when they are really mad at Judge Keller.
My main gripe with Brownell prior to last year is that he had been here a long time without really having much to show for it. I thought maybe it was time to try something new. I wanted a new Coach if he didn’t make the tourney last year. He made it and had a good run.
He has put together two really good years by fielding complete teams. I still scratch my head on the couple of losses a year to bad basketball teams. Fortunately we won’t play any bad teams in the tourney.

Scott Drew at Baylor took 18 seasons before he won a natty. He never won his conference until that year though he had a fairly steady resume of NCAA dances but never making it past the elite 8. Brownell dance appearances are a good bit less.
There is something to be said for a program to keep a good coach and just stick with him instead of going through the hire/fire cycle that usually leads to the same place if you'd just kept the good coach to begin with.
Maybe Brownell needs another 3 years to win a natty. Plus basketball isn't the bread winner for an athletic department anyways.

Brownell might win a Natty in three years? Lol - here is to hoping that wish comes true. I’d take any kind of championship. Maybe he should try winning the ACC first…

You never know who might have been the top candidates for jobs, but as long as you see stories that Coaches were possible top candidates for jobs is comforting that you have a coach that is being recognized for doing a good job. At one time Coach Brownell in his earlier part of his tenure he was a candidate at Memphis. See link at bottom.
You can believe all you want that Brownell was not a serious candidate at Indiana, but after all the smoke cleared from response from the very big name coaches who passed on any interest, he actually ended up on the Hoosiers final top 3 line at at the Indiana could get before it was clear that Coach Brownell was happy at Clemson, and Indiana was focusing more of coaches that their fanbase liked better. Coaches on that last 3rd or 4th line also who indicated that were happy and moving on were very good coaches TJ Otzelberger at Iowa State and Greg McDermott at Creighton. That is a good group of Coaches that also said no. A lot of that also indicates that Indiana is not the job it once was. They have not been serious relevant is longer than the runs that Coach Brownell has made at Clemson. Perhaps Coach Brownell career path is comparable to Frank Beamer at VA Tech in Football. Their administration was very patient at VA Tech and it paid dividends.
Coach Brownell is doing a good job with NIL Portal era, and recruiting higher end top 100-125 recruits on a steady bases. Like I said I don't see Coach Brownell being a 75 year old guy on the sidelines. He probably is going to retire in the next 5 to 7 years. Enjoy the ride in that time period of having a relatively consistent program now that could break through for an ACC Championship and/or A Final Four in that span.

were it up to me, I would have fired him after the 2014/15 season. I still think, on his best day, he is just an average to slightly above average coach.

Im all for Brownell and really enjoying the recent success. But in reality, he was only able to keep his job and get to this point bc of Clemson basketball's overall mediocrity. We were never really terrible in his first several seasons but never above average either. He had a solid group Yr 1 and then it took him 7 years before we go back to the Big Dance. You can only survive that at very, very, very few Power 4/5 programs...the last 8 have been much better and hopefully this is the start of a nice decade run.

My guess is it's mainly been lateral moves at best and Brownell feeling a sense of loyalty towards Clemson for sticking with him when times were tough.

Pick any of the 1 thru 5 seeds and tell me which of our players they'd start instead of their current 5. If you can't admit he's overachieving with the bunch we have, then you just hate him for the past results.

Everyone needs to stop taking pot shots at Brad. He's done a hell of a job at a school that has never won the ACC championship and really isn't what I consider a basketball school (ie the arena has been empty a lot during his tenure), particularly in comparison to the Tobacco Road universities. Try recruiting against these schools. In the new age of the portal and NIL, he has transitioned well!

I hope I am wrong as well. Contrary to what the Brownell homers say, those of us who think he’s average at best still want Clemson to succeed in basketball. That’s exactly why we are ready to move on. I’m fine with him proving me wrong. That means Clemson finally wins a championship of some kind in basketball.
