I see lots of Captain Hindsight's making appearances here regarding GOR

Few folks complained about it in 2013 / 2016 at least to my recollection but I'm too lazy to search the archive and just wanted an excuse to post something about my favorite superhero. I'm enjoying all the should've and would've comments.

time of the GOR, we were at risk.
The name of the game at the time was exclusively "TV markets". Nothing else was given any value. And Clemson didn't have it. The SEC already had UofSC. The Big Ten wasn't even remotely interested, either geographically or academically (the AAU thing and all). I suppose there was a window where the Big 12 was a consideration but really, would we have been better off?
UNC, NCSU, VT and UVA all would have been more attractive to the SEC and Big Ten at that time.
Heck, the GOR even pre-dates our current run. We had just come off of a couple of nice seasons. Sure, in 2012 we had a great season and beat LSU in the CFA Bowl, and had a strong season in 2011 but got absolutely pants-ed by WVU in our bowl game. Even if "brand" were the name of the game (as I think it is now), we didn't have it. The year before that we were 6-7 and lost to South Florida in Charlotte.
It's arguable that the GOR has been a huge asset to Clemson, providing a degree of stability over the past decade while we have had the best run of our program's history. So instead of constantly cursing it as keeping us from future greatness, we would probably be better served to determine how to continue to optimize the value of our position in our current situation.

The GOR came about after Maryland left. They wanted to lock in schools.

Fair point. However, Tnet poasters did not have a fiduciary duty to review the GOR extension terms like our President and BOTs did at the time. If they did not hire their own media consultant/expert and specialized legal counsel at the time to review possible scenarios/contingencies, dios mio. Here is a link to the ACC Network and GOR extension announcement with regrettable quotes from crowd favorite Swofford and our own Jim Clements. Enjoy! https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/17102933/acc-espn-agree-20-year-rights-deal-lead-2019-launch-acc-network

I was on here screaming about it at that time. It sucked at the time and really sucks now. Anyone who was unbiased could see it. There were plenty on here that didn't like it. You never give up flexibility for that long.

The length of the GOR is the issue. 2036, and a poor TV contract as compared leaves us in the dust.
