I heard all (or most) of the students got kicked out - I figured they just left. When did that happen and what were they doing?

Probably got nailed for studying when they were supposed to be watching the game!
My daughter graduated from Wake and all the games we went to there the female students spent all their time at the games with their backs to the field looking up in the stands trying to find their friends.

the Wake student section. They did not get kicked out. They simply left once the game got out of hand.

I was close to them. They showed up about midway through first quarter then left at halftime never to return.

Football is not important to all folks. Especially students who have more pressing things on their mind like meeting their friends at a bar. I understand.

.... especially for night games, students consider the game as the beginning of the party. They come to the game, meet their friends, then all go out together at halftime to continue the party at whatever meeting spot they choose.
Not all students, mind you. But, hard as it is for us to imagine, there are actually thousands of students at universities that are not really interested in football, other than a social event.

that is like that. My son says she can't tell you who won, but she can tell you what all the girls were wearing and who had on too much makeup etc.

Last time I went intoxication was a huge issue. They sell alcohol and I was fairly close to them. Things went sideways fairly quick and it was a great ballgame.
