I want to play cards with anti vaxers

Aug 3, 2021, 8:36 AM

1) Clemson over puppies 38 - 28

2) I understand if folks have a medical condition that prevents them from getting vaccinated. But without such a condition, there is no explanation for not getting the vaccine. Anti vaxers simply do not understand odds / probabilities / math. I would love to play cards with anti vaxers.

Here is the math to drive home your point. Without the vaccine you are 8 times more likely to get infected with the virus than a vaccinated person, and 25 times more likely to be hospitalized or be DEAD, than a vaccinated person who catches the virus.

should take some responsibility to wear a mask to prevent getting the virus from another person not vaccinated. Once you have the virus, the vaccination will not cure the patient. THAT is what is happening now to many states in the U.S. Southern states have a higher percentage refusing to take the vaccine.

Doctors are now hearing a common comment from new Covid patients. They are all asking for the vaccine, but the vaccine is too late after you have already acquired the virus.

Funny anti-vaxx /COVID is a hoax story

Aug 3, 2021, 10:34 AM [ in reply to Generally speaking, the antivaxers I know... ]

So one day I notice a graph being posted by an old friend from Charleston who I went to high school with and is now a chiropractor.

Anyway, it was a graph supposedly from the CDC that showed pneumonia cases being misdiagnosed as COVID (to make a long story short). I think many people have seen or heard this argument before in some manner or another but this was being posted as actual data from the CDC.

As it just so happens, I was on the misleading statistics topic with my high-level IB math class at the time. I had them look into this for homework.

Turns out that the graph my friend posted was completely doctored from a real graph found on the CDC website. The whole thing was a complete fabrication with already many forwards, likes, and agreements from old high school friends and people I knew from Charleston on Facebook.

I gave the findings to my friend which he said he appreciated. He took the graph down and apologized to everyone for posting a fake graph. He said he didn't know it was fake and that he found it on a QAnon Facebook group. He then unfriended me.

I think it is a microcosm of the story we are seeing here with people not wanting to get vaccinated and this is the sad reality no matter what these people say outwardly.

Vaccines, and designing them have actually become simple science within the medical community that works on these things every day of their life.

Personally bc I'm a type 2 diabetic, I couldn't wait to poke my arm out of car window to get my two vaccinations. I mean as careful as I was wearing the mask everywhere, disinfecting my hands constantly, it was always a fear in my mind that if I let my guard down just once for any reason, it could be the cause of death for me and my wife!!!!

Before the vaccine, I done "all" of our shopping bc I didn't trust our lives with anybody but myself bc, I have been a forward thinker my whole life with always thinking of what happens if I do something this or that way, a be aware type personality....

First -- I'm vaccinated and I'm not anti-vax. I'm thankful that most people are getting them

However, I don't understand the almost militant attitude some of you have towards people who are unsure of getting the vaccine for whatever reason. Nobody knows with 100% certainty what the long term effects of these vaccines will be, and if anyone says they do, they're not being truthful.

About half the commercials on TV/Radio are "Did you take drug-XYZ? Do you now have cancer/glaucoma/arthritis/liver damage/parkinsons/etc.? Then call our law offices." And ALL of these drugs that have now been taken off the market were FDA APPROVED. They went through years of testing. Let that sink in.

I don't really get angry about people that are anti-vaxers. It does, however, change the way that I think of them, especially the otherwise healthy young adults that figure they can beat the virus if they get it. I see those people as very selfish. Their choice puts others at risk. It disappoints me that so many only look at this as a decision that affects themselves.

I get what you're saying

Aug 3, 2021, 9:42 AM [ in reply to Re: I want to play cards with anti vaxers ]

But we also know what the short and long-term effects of COVID are: death and permanent lung damage in severe cases. One of the supervisors in my factory STILL can't walk down the hallway without wheezing now; he was in a coma for three weeks while battling COVID last year. One of our VPs was hospitalized for weeks and still struggles with fatigue months later; he's only in his 50's.

That's why I don't understand the argument against the "untested" nature of the vaccine, relative to other vaccines. Sure, I allow that the vaccine could have some ill effects on some folks, but we're over six months into deployment so far with hundreds of millions of shots given out and there are zero reports of that being a big deal. To my understanding, there are no higher chances of adverse reactions to the COVID vaccine than any of the others.

But speaking of adverse side effects of things, we KNOW what COVID can do: lung scarring, pneumonia, permanent shortness of breath and fatigue, and you know, death. Until the vaccine kills 2.13% of the people who partake of it (COVID global mortality rate, calculated by copying the table into Excel https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality), or at least 1.7% in the US, the "side effect" argument doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Btw, 1.7% of the US vaccinated population would be 2.8 million people. I haven't seen that many people keel over from the shot yet.

What I don't think people want to accept is that we are already in a crappy situation. It's here. We lost the chance to not be in it. Because of that, we have to make crappy choices. And I've yet to see anything REMOTELY CLOSE to convincing me that rolling the dice with COVID is a better choice than getting the vax. Which is why I got it months ago, and will get any additional follow-ups Moderna deems necessary.

Not anti-vaccine, BUT...

Aug 3, 2021, 10:40 AM [ in reply to I get what you're saying ]

But I think there are risks with the vaccine - it's not 100% risk free. I have a friend who developed Bells Palsy soon after getting the vaccine. Maybe it's not the root cause, I don't know, but there also are cases of heart problems with people who got the vaccine (a very very small percentage but still not zero).

If you're young, healthy, and especially if you've already tested Covid-positive, I can understand the reluctance to getting vaccinated. Look at those numbers, since the OP talked about calculating odds - it seems that young healthy people are at a pretty-close-to-0 percent chance of developing severe Covid symptoms (a very very small percentage but still not zero - again!).

And even if you're old, unhealthy, and never had Covid, I think you have the right to not get the vaccine. I think you're making a bad risk calculation, but I don't think you should be forced to get it.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OF COURSE there are risks

Aug 3, 2021, 10:48 AM

But the risks of COVID are hugely greater. That's all my TLDR post was trying to say.

There are tons of reports coming in of folks getting COVID multiple times, so I don't think "I've already had it" is a valid reason to factor into a vaccine decision.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aug 3, 2021, 10:49 AM [ in reply to Not anti-vaccine, BUT... ]

told to get the vaccine at this point.

There is no good data showing that antibodies from prior COVID infection don't last.

I know people who had COVID well over a year ago and still have antibodies on testing.

Until there is evidence that infection with COVID isn't lasting, and that antibodies generated from the vaccine are superior in a meaningful way, those who have had documented (not suspected) COVID shouldn't be advised to get the vaccine.

Re: I want to play cards with anti vaxers

Aug 3, 2021, 9:43 AM [ in reply to Re: I want to play cards with anti vaxers ]

COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines Will Be Rigorously Evaluated for Safety
mRNA vaccines are safe and effective.

mRNA vaccines have been held to the same rigorous safety and effectiveness standards [332 KB, 24 pages]external icon as all other types of vaccines in the United States. The only COVID-19 vaccines the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will make available for use in the United States (by approval or emergency use authorization) are those that meet these standards.

mRNA Vaccines Are New, But Not Unknown
Researchers have been studying and working with mRNA vaccines for decades. Interest has grown in these vaccines because they can be developed in a laboratory using readily available materials. This means the process can be standardized and scaled up, making vaccine development faster than traditional methods of making vaccines.

mRNA vaccines have been studied before for flu, Zika, rabies, and cytomegalovirus (CMV). As soon as the necessary information about the virus that causes COVID-19 was available, scientists began designing the mRNA instructions for cells to build the unique spike protein into an mRNA vaccine.

Future mRNA vaccine technology may allow for one vaccine to provide protection for multiple diseases, thus decreasing the number of shots needed for protection against common vaccine-preventable diseases.

Beyond vaccines, cancer research has used mRNA to trigger the immune system to target specific cancer cells.

Most people once they choose a side they have to be pitted against the other. We’re more tribal than we’ve ever been. People who are for vaccines accuse ones who are not getting them of killing people, people who are against them call the people getting them “sheep”. Both sides have numbers to back up their claims, they both bend statistics to highlight only parts of the picture that support their beliefs. Both sides shout each other down.
For someone who doesn’t identify with either side, it makes discourse with even the average person frustrating. I feel like people’s political views are so much more a part of their identity than it ever has been.

Your chances of dying from COVID

Aug 3, 2021, 10:38 AM [ in reply to I'm all in to playing with your understanding of odds and ]

are much higher than dying from the COVID vaccine.

It's a myth that the vaccine wasn't adequately studied. A significant amount of preliminary research on mRNA vaccines has been performed over the past decade, and the human trials evaluating the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines were large in scope. They only seem "rushed" because a ton of money was injected as a result of Operation Warp Speed. There were still tens of thousands of people in those initial studies.

Moreover, the many millions of people who have already received both doses of the vaccine provide an unprecedented amount of data as to the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine.

If all of this isn't enough evidence for you, I'm not sure what you expect. It sounds like you already have your mind made up that you don't believe the data.

Let me guess, you also don't trust the COVID case numbers and deaths. Am I correct?

Info straight from the CDC site referenced below...Breakthrough cases are cases of the virus AFTER getting the shots. What you need to know...of the people that got covid after getting the shots, 19% have died!!!! And they openly admit that they only track the people that are hospitalized with covid after the shots...not the tens of thousands that get it and are not hospitalized. Check the numbers yourself!

Hospitalized or fatal COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases reported to CDC as of July 26, 2021

As of July 26, 2021, more than 163 million people in the United States had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

During the same time, CDC received reports from 49 U.S. states and territories of 6,587 patients with COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infection who were hospitalized or died.
Total number of vaccine breakthrough infections reported to CDC
Hospitalized or fatal vaccine breakthrough cases reported to CDC 6,587
Female 3,193 (48%)
People aged ?65 years 4,868 (74%)
Asymptomatic infections 1,219 (19%)
Hospitalizations* 6,239 (95%)
Deaths† 1,263 (19%)

Define anti-vaxer.

Aug 3, 2021, 9:53 AM

I have been vaccinated for multiple diseases and get the regular flu vaccine most years. I have had my kids get all of their shots as well, so I would not characterize myself as an anti-vaxxer.

But I am cautious about getting a new vaccine which hasn't had long term clinical tests. What happens if we discover that the vaccine leads to an increase in Parkinsons in 5 years? Or causes an immune system deficiency later in life... I don't know..but something that was never tested because it was rushed through.

With that in mind, I can weigh the risks and make my own choice. I am not elderly, don't have morbidity conditions, and I had Covid back in January and should still have some antibodies.

I resent the government trying to force something like an unproven vaccine onto me and my family,.. a family that is definitely not anti-vaccine. I may choose to get the vaccine as time passes, but as the left often says..my body, my choice.

Aug 3, 2021, 10:46 AM [ in reply to Define anti-vaxer. ]

You're right, we don't know the long-term effects of the vaccine.

Let's apply that to other things we are exposed to, such as:

-Cell phones
-Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
-Artificial sweeteners
-WiFi
-Hybrid/electric cars
-The many new chemicals released into the environment each year

Do you avoid all of the above things as well? I'm guessing you have a cell phone, and you probably have WiFi in your home. If you work, you probably have WiFi there as well.

The above list represents things that certainly aren't good for us, and quite possibly harm our bodies. I mention them to illustrate the fact that we take risks all day by exposing ourselves to things that might be harmful. But we are willing to take those risks because we believe the benefits outweigh them.

I agree that it would be nice to have more long-term data on COVID vaccines. Since we don't, we are left to decide if we would prefer the potential risk of COVID vaccine versus the potential risk of getting COVID - as well as the reality that fewer vaccinations mean an ongoing pandemic.

Finally, I would argue that the currently known risks of COVID-19 greatly outweigh the currently known risks of the COVID vaccine. After a year and a half of this pandemic, we know that even those who survive COVID often have long-term effects. That's a significant aspect of COVID that is minimized for the most part.

"Finally, I would argue that the currently known risks of COVID-19 greatly outweigh the currently known risks of the COVID vaccine."

This is literally, STATISTICALLY, not true for the vast majority of people.

In my demographic, and based on my health I am statistically more likely to die of the pre-covid flu than I am of Covid. What kind of idiot would take an mRNA gene therapy that DOESN'T EVEN STOP YOU FROM GETTING COVID, over those odds?

Ivermectin is a great therapeutic and the one that many other M.D.s have prescribed HCQ with zinc, D3, and vitamin C regiment. If you want to be guinea pig for a rapid vaccine that wasn't even tested on lab rats then by all means. If you want to protest in the streets because you don't feel like your children should be stuck with a graphene oxide, mRNA concoction then by all means. If you wear a mask then why are you concerned about the ones not wearing a mask, if you get the jab then why are you concerned about the ones that prefer to use a holistic approach. If you don't wave at me because I am not vaccinated then that is your prerogative. Keep up the division that way we can separate the wheat from the chafe when it hits fan.

Quite frankly your point and analogy are ignorant and when spike proteins restrict the flow and/or cause heart inflammation then I hope you will have the same passion.

Let me guess, NBC and CNN has not shown that side of the Pfizer vaccine. I can provide multiple links to independent research. Can you? I have natural antibodies by the way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How exactly do spike proteins restrict blood flow?

Why does it have to be either-or?

Aug 3, 2021, 10:51 AM [ in reply to Re: I want to play cards with anti vaxers ]

Why can't people get the vaccine, knowing that things like Ivermectin, vitamin D, etc. are also available if they have a breakthrough infection?

I believe in those therapies as well, but I'd hate to risk them not working when the vaccine is available to most likely prevent infection altogether.

I guess it is similar to playing Russian roulette with a bullet in one chamber versus one with no bullets in it. I'm going to go with the one with no bullets in it. Of course the argument could be that it is dangerous to play the game with no bullets in the chamber because the hammer could hit your thumb.

Just because someone does not want to receive

Aug 3, 2021, 10:21 AM

the COVID-19 vaccine until further testing is done and long-term effects are discovered DOES NOT make someone an anti-vaxer. The continual flip-flopping of the CDC does not encourage someone to get the COVID vaccine.

Therefore, the condescending tone and term 'anti-vaxer' is unwarranted.

I wish more people had gotten the vaccine

Aug 3, 2021, 10:28 AM

because it works really well. The research is clear: it's the most effective vaccine we've ever seen, and it's incredibly safe.

Unfortunately, misinformation abounds. People believe fake news and half-truths posted on the internet. To complicate matters, our political leaders and medical advisors on the national level handled things very poorly in those critical early weeks/months of the pandemic.

Anti-vaxxers are getting a lot of the blame for more people not getting vaccinated, but they are the vocal minority. Most of the people who aren't vaccinated are children who don't qualify for it. So I do feel that anti-vaxxers are getting undue blame for the pandemic not being over.

As much as I'd like for more people to get the vaccine, I support people's right to refuse it.

Finally, it's extremely hypocritical when the people who scream "my body my choice" to defend abortion don't apply that same logic to vaccines.

It's a free country and we can't force vaccines on everyone. It is sad to see people making bad decisions that affect and endanger everyone but so be it.

Now, what we can do is give certain restrictions where it's needed to people who don't want to get vaccinated to protect other people.

Any father or mother knows that their kids have to be vaccinated for certain things to get into schools. You can choose not to and home-school. Still, it's a choice.

Why does it matter to you if others get vaccinated? You got it good for you, no need to try and down play others for choosing not to get it . It’s like middle school kids in a club and mad because others won’t join .

I'll give you some examples:

Aug 3, 2021, 10:56 AM [ in reply to Re: I want to play cards with anti vaxers ]

Two young parents are vaccinated, but their small children aren't. Those two parents don't feel comfortable taking their children out in public, because their children are not vaccinated.

An elderly patient with a history of vaccine reactions in the past is recommended by his doctor not to get the COVID vaccine. He doesn't feel safe in public.

A middle-aged woman has autoimmune issues which prevent her from getting the COVID vaccine. She also doesn't feel comfortable going out in public.

These types of situations might seem uncommon to you, but in a city of 100,000, 500,000, or 1 million plus, these situations happen every day.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll bite, if you don't want to get vaccinated

Aug 3, 2021, 11:56 AM

but wear a mask in public and socially distance yourself from everyone then I think you're being responsible.

If you don't want to get vaccinated, you refuse to wear a mask, go to large gatherings in public without social distancing then you're being irresponsible. It's really that simple.

Hey, I support your decision to be unvaccinated but I think that you just need to be responsible with it. I don't see how that is unfair.

I HAVE A MEDICAL CONDITION. IT IS CALLED NATURAL IMMUNITY FROM WHEN I HAD THE DREADED COVID. ANY DOCTOR THAT IS NOT A POLITICIAN SAYS DO NOT GET THE SHOT WHILE YOU ARE NATURALLY IMMUNED. PLUS A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY WIMMENS, ARE SAYING THEY WILL NOT GET IT BECAUSE OF WHAT IT MAY DO TO A KID IF THEY PLAN ON HAVING ONE. THE NURSES IN CHARLOTTE ARE BALKING AT THE SHOT. YES, THE SAME NURSES THAT HAVE BEEN ON THE FRONT LINE FOR OVER A YEAR. THEY SAY THEY WILL NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR BODY THAT IS UNPROVEN TO WORK ON AN ILLNESS THAT HAS A 99.5% CHANCE OF SURVIVING. NOW WHAT KIND OF CARDS DO YOU WANT TO PLAY.

What are the odds that writing in all capital letters well more effectively convey your thoughts? IDK.

What are the odds that the vaccine, not Covid, but the moderna or Pfizer vaccine, will harm you in any manner? Don’t tell me it’s new. Don’t tell me it’s unproven. We have a sample size of well over 150 MILLION doses, and that’s just in the US. What’s the numerator? What’s the denominator? Assess the odds.

Let me be clear, these are rhetorical questions. Nobody wants to hear your painful aimless attempts to ignore quantitative data by throwing out anecdotal stories that provide anti vaxers with comfort.

No more kid gloves. More and more people are tired of hearing the dumb excuses. Pick yourself up, get up off the couch, take action for others, and if you’re medically cleared to do so, get vaccinated.

Good luck.

I agree with deroberts. I’ve also had covid and I remain unvaccinated. Had I not gotten covid I would be more likely vaccinated. But it’s my choice to allow my body the opportunity to have natural immunity post covid. That’s my choice and I will not be shamed or forced to take the vaccine. I really don’t give a crap how much they push or even try to mandate.
