Maybe one of our biggest little issues causing offensive inconsistency

The check down / dump off pass.
Ours has got to be one of the worst offenses among the P4 teams in the above area.
I love Phil Mafah’s play; as a blocker and as a runner who can do great damage to a defense if he’s given a good hole to get started, he’s indispensable.
He’s also got good hands for catching the short pass.
What he doesn’t possess is the ability to make the first defender miss after he catches the check down pass.
(*). When an offense is almost never able to get 5 to 8 yards from a check down pass, the offense is saddled with a third & long or a failed third down conversion.
It is this area where we miss Will Shipley the most.

CK2 also waits too long to dump it to PM7... by the time he gets the ball, he's blanketed by 2 or 3 defenders, and can't do anything with it.

Mafah's pass protection wasn't the best against Pitt. In fact, it was pretty bad he didn't grade out well.

Exactly. Spiller would make that first guy miss and was gone.

Indeed, Spiller was special, darn near unique, as far as doing the most with check-down passes. Same with ETN. However, even with non-super stars, our check-down to the RB was still noticeably better in the past than it is now.
The check-down worked much better with Shipley, Gallman, Adam Choice, etc. was still enough of a weapon to be a factor in sustaining drives.
As for 2024, it is what it is.

I call that the d-ink and dunk. I can always tell when we are going to struggle offensively. Seems like every time that we come out and start using those check down plays (as the primary reciever and not as a check) in the first 2-3 plays...the offense is going to a struggle to get in rythm all game. Those plays have sucked for us for 3 years now.

I doubt you are old enough to even know who Danny was because you don't realize we are are 10th in the country in total yards and average more than 36 points a game. Dozens of teams would kill for those numbers. Our defense on the other hand is 52nd and only 5th in the conference.

Did I say that our offense stinks?
Nope.
I pointed out that the check-down pass to the RB is weak.
