He isn't getting enough reps when the game is on the line. Maybe Dabo tries to keep it a little closer in 2 weeks vs the coots so we can get some valuable reps for the worst part of this team before the playoffs.

No need to keep it close. Just punt on 3rd down, well maybe 2nd down if we don't get any 3rd downs.

he's just not a good punter.
There is a reason why he is out-shined week after week by the opposition's punter.
This past Saturday against Wake was no exception.

Not to be cruel but honesty is sometimes cruel...he is, without a doubt, the worst punter in America. I call him the Jake Bentley of punting, he’s drastically worse than the year before. I hope he enters the transfer portal or switches to lacrosse. Wealth has its privileges.

Assuming it’s because of his last name is a bit dramatic.

It’s more likely due to the fact that those behind him on the depth chart aren’t as good.
You don’t actually think Dabo would keep him in the game if there like were a better option, do you?

Dom Maggio was extraordinary this past week. He is the # 7 punter in the country. Excellent !
But all of y'all should climb off of Will's back. He is averaging over 40 yards per punt! That ain't ########### !!

just plain ignorant. We're actually #60. Not great but far from the worst. Lay off the kid. What we need to more concerned with is kicking consistency. It could be gigantic if we end up absolutely needing a FG. But again, nothing against the player. Any "fan" who jumps on this board to call a "kid" out needs to turn in his fan card or at least have it suspended until he can learn some scruples.

On a more serious note, I haven't watched closely this year, but in the past his real problem with his punting was his drop.
I would imagine that is still his problem.
He rarely drops the ball in the same place with the same timing. This is why he has the ability to his a 50+ yard punt, but is more likely to mishit the ball and have a much shorter result.

Spiers actually had in his career. Maybe 2 or 3?
His most effective punts are the ones that are so short the return man can't run up far enough to field them that then take a nice bounce and roll another 15 yards. Those usually end up in the 40-45 yard range.

that he punts much better during warm-ups than he does in the actual games which leads me to believe his inconsistency is entirely mental.

He also has appeared to punt better early in seasons than later on. Maybe a mental thing of getting down on himself after a bad punt or game and not recovering mentally.
Or maybe he gets tired and should have just gone to an SEC school where this is acceptable.

I didn't say he actually punts the ball 50+ yards.
I said he has the ability to do so.
He rarely makes solid contact with the football.

What kills me is he rarely gets it inside the 20 from midfield. If Potter fumbled a snap like Spiers did...Spiers just walks to sideline with hands on helmet...not a word. His name is his talent.

This is accurate. You need to be reliable as a kicker/punter. With FG kicking it's pretty easy to measure reliability. With punting, it's a little harder than just looking at the average. I'd rather have a guy average 40 yards a punt and kicks it 40 yards every time than have a guy that averages 45 but will get that average by following a 60 yard punt with a 30 yard punt.

I've only seen Will Swinney have one decent play out if the 6 or 7 I've seen. He runs horizontal fir too long waiting for a whole to open up that never dies and get tackled before he ever gets going vertical down the field.

I've posted this before, but his dad is on staff, one of his sisters is Dabo's assistant and his other sister is dating one of Dabo's sons (Drew, I believe).
Kid's job is beyond secure, he's basically in the family.

You guys are all missing the point. We all praise our players for their unselfish, team-first attitude. We appreciate that they are more concerned about winning than they are about their personal stats. But then some of you guys are jumping down Will Spier's throat cause he isn't booming big, long punts.
Will Spier's averages over 40 yards net on his punt's with only 2 touchbacks all season. Clemson is ranked 32 in the country in net yards gained per punt.
By way of contrast, Dom Maggio (from Wake Forest) kicked the ball out of the stadium last week (It was impressive to see). He is the 7th ranked punter in the country with an average over 47 yards per punt. However, his net yardage is under 40 yards gained per punt and Wake is ranked 37 in that category.
So when it comes down to helping the team, Will Spiers is doing more for his team than Dom Maggio. Maybe we could stop complaining and enjoy that fact for a while.

You are exactly right . Kicking the ball for placement or kicking to a certain side of the field is also important .
It’s a thing of beauty to see s punter kick a long, high spiral . But if you out kick your coverage your defenders are subject to giving up a long return .
Also if you constantly kick into the end zone, you give up a lot of yardage in field position .
Finally , I believe the reason we see so many rugby style punts is because the ball is difficult to catch thus making no return or a fumble more likely .
Just my 2 cents .

Maybe Wake SUCKS at covering punts. Ger off your high horse. Spiers has no touchbacks because he leaves the ball at the 20.

Where does fumbling the snap and losing yards on the fumble factor in to his punting average? That would give him about a 20 yard average for the Wake game.

The unknown conspiracy theory is that Will deliberately punts badly so our world-class defense can shine and get the necessary reps they will need when "championship mode" happens in November. Also, what is even harder to see is that our offense loses 30-40 yards of field position after we exchange punts. That way our offense can shine and get all those yards and break all those records. You guys just aren't looking deeply enough int the master plan that Dabo & Company is using.
Hint: just review how many times in recent years that our O had to start inside our own 10-yard line, and went 90+ yards to score.
OK - at this point, it only a theory, but kudos to the first to prove it.
Also, another theory is that Will just isn't very good at punting, which might be easier to prove.

that he and the other specialists don't get the recognition and support they deserve! Fans are so quick to take one mistake and make it out to be something horrible! It's not! He is a great punter! One mistake last season and one this season does not make him a bad punter! I realize his range isn't as long as many others, but truth be told, how many punters out there can kick more than 45 yards? HARDLY ANY! For a punter, it's just as important to have a long hang time as it is to have a long range, each can and will be very very effective. Some punters, like the Wake Forrest punter, are obviously really talented and can do both. The thing is though, very few punters are like him, so quit bagging on Will for that! While we're at it, TigerNet, quit making the specialists out to be useless, unworthy of positive attention, or Coach Swinney out to be a monster for yelling at them! I swear y'all are the reason why so many Clemson fans are so hard on them! #Specialistsareawesome #BiggestFan #Appointedbythespecialiststhemselves
