I’m fine with the obscure, quirky animal mascots (UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, etc.) - it’s the made-up, inauthentic nonsense term devoid of any local significance that chaps me. Zero nod to the history or features of the area whatsoever. 100% a wasted opportunity.

That's a local connection to me. I find the Hub City part to be dumb. The name Spartanburg is already unique.

Spartanburg's nickname has been the "Hub City" since forever. Like Anderson being the "Electric City". Forgotten or perhaps never known by the younger generation. And Spartanburg is well known for burgers from the Beacon. You can think it is dumb, but you would be wrong to say the name has no connection to Spartanburg.

I don’t mind the Hub City part either, but if you’re playing up Hub City, don’t then shift the imagery to something so nonspecific. Burgers don’t define Spartanburg, no matter how famous the Beacon is. It’s as germane as calling the team the Gardeners or Warehousers or Commuters or somethin.

Agree. If they were wanting to use the Hub City theme the Spartanburg Hubs is a good one I thought of.
Also Spartanburg Beacons or Spartanburg Rangers ( Rangers affiliate)
