Failing to academically qualify - question
Jul 19, 2012, 9:51 AM
|
|
Does anyone know what our academic qualifications are for athletes? Is it a hard and fast SAT and/or HS GPA or is it more nebulous? Is it our standard or the ACC's?
I know athletes don't have to meet the same qualifications as regular students already (which I am OK with) so I am trying to understand why a kid doesn't qualify for us but would for Marshall or some other school.

once it was revealed they don't require you to do school work and in fact do it for you.

The NCAA establishes some minimim standards/requirements

which are accepted by some schools such as Marshall (among others). Clemson, along with all of the other schools in the ACC, have academic requirements that are higher than those set by the NCAA.

if you have better test scores you can have a lower GPA, and vice versa

If I read that correctly

If you have a 3.55 but only a 400 on the SAT (which you get for signing your name) you qualify.
If that is correct then a HS can let the kid slide by with great grades for doing and knowing nothing.
It that is right that is crazy - and may explain Clowney.

I worked at one of the better football schools in Texas

They were only 4A, but they regularly produce 4* and 5* players. They did away with D's in the grade scale, so if you pass the class, the worst you can get is a 2.0, which makes it much easier to qualify. I thought it was pretty shady.

Great chart. Thanks for posting.
Look at that chart VERY closely. Starting in 2016 the necessary GPA for a given SAT goes up almost half a point. That is a MAJOR INCREASE. There will be MANY Clemson, SC, ACC, SEC, etc. recruits who will not make the grade. That's when the stuff is going to hit the fan, and the coaches and fans will start raising heck.
Please note that the increased GPA is what they will need to play as freshmen. The school can still admit them with the old qualifying GPA, BUT THEY WILL HAVE TO SIT OUT A YEAR if they don't have the higher number. Some people are calling this an ACADEMIC REDSHIRT YEAR.
Personally, I think it's a good change. But it ain't gonna be popular.

At USuCk, if you show the ability to get from point A to point B with a pizza, you're in.
