I love the new scoreboard, but…
Aug 17, 2022, 11:38 AM
|
|
All these pictures remind me of how much I miss the trees they took down a few years back. I hope that there are plans to replace them once the work is completed. I don’t think you could go wrong with native species like the white oak, Bradford pear, or one of the maples that have orange leaves in the fall. This would soften the look of the stadium and the colors would be tremendous at certain times of the year.

The lawmakers agree with you. New sales of bradford pears are banned in SC starting Oct 2024.

Sorry Francis, should have done your homework on Bradford pears. Clemson adamantly opposes Bradfords, hence as stated above, Clemson University got the SC lawmakers to ban.
In addition, Clemson advertises regular that if you'll remove your Bradford, they'll give you a tree to replace as many as you take out. Just FYI. You can contact your extension office please. Tia...

They break easily in storms, smell bad, and are non-native/invasive.

Trees in east endzone

Your post reminds me of the home game versus u of georgia in 1981. I was a senior in high school and would in 1982 enroll at Clemson to earn an engineering degree. But, for those of you who were at that game, the excitement and electric environment was outstanding and a bit mindblowing for a kid from a small town in Orangeburg County.
The tie-in with the trees came shortly after we arrived at our seats in the south upper deck. The Clemson band was playing thier songs when a wall of sound emerged from seemingly nowhere. After closer inspection, because the stadium was completely sold out, temporary stands were located behind one of those old oak trees, which is where the u of georgia band was seated. Their band played from behind the tree all day and left the Memorial Stadium in a lugubrious mood.

Old timer here that loves the memories that brings back. There's a back story there that was making the rounds at the time that is worth mentioning. The previous year UGA had located the Clemson band in the upper deck at Sanford Stadium. Putting the UGA band, all 300+ of them, on the temporary bleachers under the trees was payback. I can't remember for sure, but wouldn't be surprised if those bleachers made their way back to their normal home on the Monday after the game.

Plus, I think they are now illegal in SC. Otherwise, I agree.
And, with the upcoming ACC/PAC-12 conference merger, we can ceremonially chop down a tree every other year when we play Stanford.

Bradfords certainly aren't native. Actually, considered an invasive species. We cut them down on the farm as fast as we can find them. Clemson extension sometimes give out fruit tree or oak tree saplings for each Bradford you can show them you destroyed.
