I know we get very focused on what is best for CU athletics

and I do believe that keeping Stanford/Cal out of the ACC is best for Clemson athletics if we want out of the ACC and a shot at greener pastures with more revenue. But what I do worry about is will history one day record what a missed opportunity it was for the ACC not to create a dominant academic conference by adding those schools and all of the missed joint grants and research opportunities that could have been accomplished together?
I guess if the ACC ceases to exist in a few years then it really won't matter, especially if Clemson leaves the ACC, but what if the ACC makes it and Clemson doesn't leave?

No worries, just trying to broaden the discussion a bit. We've talked so much about everything related to this, it is kind of hard to come up with new angles to talk about

I spent 40 years in the Medical Device field. We did multiple cross institution research agreements that involved sister institutions working together. Case in point, we worked a lot with Stanford/UCLA in joint partnership agreements. These deals are numerous throughout healthcare in device, pharma and biotech.

Sorry, you mentioned ACC and I was too focused on Stanford. We had the same agreements between Duke and UNC. There were several advantages for us to structure them as joint agreements rather than individual agreements because we wanted them working together on our projects and not independent of each other. When they work independently, they are so darn competitive that information flows slowly and bogs down the entire process and outcomes because they don't want their individual results to get out.
Also, because of the close proximity of the campuses, Duke and UNC actually share a lot of faculty, so having them work together just makes a lot of sense.

Fair enough…but do you believe these were a result of being in the same athletic conference or due to geographical proximity and being in the same state?

I think that being closely connected in athletics with UVA, UNC, GT, Wake and Duke for 50+ years helped Clemson become a better school. I suspect our academic faculty and leaders enjoyed their association with those well ranked academic institutions. I suspect our BOT has been focused on academic improvement for a long time and being in the conference culture we enjoyed was helpful.
I also think our strong military heritage helped push Clemson in the correct direction. My Pop, from Pennsylvania, was a career army officer who served in WWII and Korea and he had a high opinion of the Clemson men with whom he served from 1939-1964.
There is no way to prove that what I think is valid but I do believe people and institutions are often shaped by the culture in which they exist.

I am with you. ACC is a conference known for its academics. Personally, I am sorry we missed on Stanford and Cal.

I think the Clemson vote NO on the Stanford and Cal was an indicator we know we are not going to stay in the ACC. If we expected to remain an ACC team, I think we would have voted for the inclusion of those west coast teams.

Harley, that's an interesting point. Do you think it also means if we were going to stay in the conference, we would have voted yes?
