than we do in football. We spend $404,314.00/player in football and $537,500.00/player in basketball. Does anyone know if this is standard at other schools?
$50,539,277.00 football budget divided by 125 players = $404,314.00/player. $8,600,000.00 basketball budget divided by 16 players = $537,500.00/player.

I imagine if you did the same analysis on other sports, we should spend more on softball and both soccer programs as they have the best ROI.

Mens soccer spends $82,526.00/player

and won a national championship doing it. $2,558,307.00 budget/31 players = $82,526.00/player
Softball spends $104,023.00/player, and made the post season 3 times and won the conference once doing it. $2,600,552.00/25 players = $104,023.00/player
Men’s basketball spends $530,000.00 +/player and has won no championships.
So soccer and softball spend about 1/3 what basketball does per player… combined. Pretty easy to see who has the better return on investment.

With 2 National Championships and an ACC Championship in 3 years plus the Hermann Trophy (Soccer’s equivalent to the Heisman trophy) awarded to Ousmane Sylla, it’s not even close.
Go Tigers!!

you hadn’t asked.
I asked as I wanted others to see the answer. Going big with a new MBB coach will require additional funds. Neff just might decide the funds would be better spent elsewhere. He could go small on a new coach but that has not worked out well in the past

I doubt any other BB coach and program has done so little with so much so often. I cannot see how Brad Brownell is not humiliatingly embarrassed to be seen in public.

When I am at the Carnival Cruise Lines Captain's Dinner, I have the option to order the surf (lobster) or turf (steak) or both. There is no upcharge for having both and they never run out because we go to port every other day. I also buy duty free jewelry on the ship, including the Open Hearts line by Jane Seymore, because I am not a sucker.

I don’t doubt it But, as with everything, the key is how it is determined? Total budget for each sport/ # of scholarship athletes? Very interesting number, but not necessarily indicative of anything.

Those numbers are moot because they should reflect players on scholarship.

Let’s just include scholarship players for each sport…
$50,539,277.00 football budget divided by 85 players = $594,575.00/player $8,600,000.00 basketball budget divided by 13 players = $661,538.00/player

To be fair, I believe the basketball number will always appear somewhat inflated by the very nature of the sport. A significant lump sum of money has to be spent on facilities, coaching salary, etc, and because basketball has such a small number of players compared to most other sports, the ratio of total program money divided by roster count will always be likely to be higher than what you would expect it to be based on the perceived value, success, and popularity of men's basketball as compared to the other Clemson sports. Francis Marion® , I don't know where you're getting your numbers, but if you'd care to indulge me, I'd be interested to see what these same ratios are for all of the Clemson sports.

The entire budget for both sports is not spent on players. Clemson spends more on its football coaching staff than it does it's basketball program.

It doesn’t matter what the money is spent on, it matter how much goes into the program, per capita. The team could spend $50,000,000.00 on push pops, wouldn’t be smart, but the per capita spent for each player would be the same as it would if they spent it on staff, travel, etc…
