In high school, DJ and Bryce Young may as well have been the same player. Their skills were equally impressive. Now BY is the Heisman favorite, and DJ’s numbers are nearly the worst in D1.
How the #### does that happen? Yes, we’ve been injured, but injuries don’t factor into a pass where DJ sets his feet, throws, and misses his guy by 10 feet…over and over again.
I just do not understand how there became what looks like a MAJOR talent gap between DJ and BY in the span of 2 short years.

decide to attack the realists on this here board. Our QB position coach is not up to snuff. But let's blame it on injuries for DW, TL, and now DJ after their freshman years.

In the last 5 years every qb who has transferred has become the starter at their destination and we have had 2 first round draft picks. Your argument is weak.

I as well got smashed for pointing out only Takh Boyd improved each year here, and that was the Chad, I remember reading articles about how maniacal Chad was teaching TB footwork and mechanics year one.

I know it seems simple, and might even be wrong,

I believe DJ's biggest problem is because he doesn't "spin" the ball the same way depending on the velocity he puts on it.
The velocity and trajectory of a tight spiral are drastically different from a wounded duck. Look at some of the vids from his bad (and good) throws from this amd last year compared to his high school throws.
If a QB can't figure out how to predict what the ball is going to do as it leaves his hands he will struggle. I think DJ's problems start with consistency in the basic throw.

That still doesn’t answer the question of WHY…if he understood that in high school, why does he not understand that now? It’s not like you just up and forget stuff like that.

The college game is different than high school. DJ was the biggest kid on the field and could throw the ball further from his knees than anyone else could throw it standing. He gets to college and every else is good too. He has to learn how to work and get better. It’s like the kid that gets straight As in high school and gets to college and gets all Cs his first semester because he never had to learn how to study in high school. Hopefully he copes and adjusts and improves.

I could believe all the opinion on DJ's spin patterns, foot placement, and alien interventions, if he hadn't had 2 fantastic games last year. He had none of those issues vs notre dame or b.c. i believe he had about 4 issues. 1. He had a horrible game vs uga and it got into his head. Dont underestimate this. The games against GT and s.c State only compounded the issue. 2. He had an o.line that made him jumpy. 3. Besides Justyn Ross, there was absolutely zero leadership for wr's. And Ross was not providing much leadership. You cannot discount experience , reps, and route knowledge at this level. If the qb has no faith that his receiver will be where he needs to be, its over. 4. Sophomore slump. Its his team this year. Hes trying to do too much, be the hero, be perfect. Hes not understanding how to let the game unfold "come to him". Remember, TLs second year was down for the first half. Realistically, Phommachanh didnt push him, either. Sometimes, practice doesnt translate to game time. We'll see next year.

I think about it like the yips in golf. You "know" how to hit it straight. You just don't.
Like I said, I may be wrong, but I think DJ does academically understand how to throw the ball. He just can't make his body do the same thing the same way every time he tries to do it.
I can see this type of thing really affecting the mental side of the game too.

I agree. I think he has a case of the yips. There are athletes in all sports that get them. The coots tightend a few years ago Hayden hurst was a good baseball player that quit baseball because of the yips and went to football. I had a case of them in high school baseball. I would get a routine ground ball and I was say to myself don’t mess up the throw over and over in my head and I would screw it up. In practice I had no problem but during games was a nightmare. Might be why we hear he practices well. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

You misspelled pocket awareness, the ability to read key players in the read option scheme and throw the ball!

He actually needs a seasoned QB coach to develop him. I’m not saying Streeter isn’t good enough, but I would like to see someone who has actually taken multiple quarter backs and completely changed them around. David Cutcliff comes to mind. Even Chad Morris made

I don’t think he understood what being the started entailed

Off the field. IMO he was not ready coming out of the summer coming into fall camp and the start of the season. I know Dabo said he was great in the fall practices but if Dabo has to say how good your doing at practice that’s a guarantee your not doing good (all the guys he talks up in practice always struggle). I think he didn’t learn enough off the field from Trevor last year and thought he could do the minimum over the summer and start of the season and come in and dominate off talent alone. That Georgia game shook him and set him back further. I think Dabo or someone finally got to him about how it is a 24/7 job a couple games in, hence the practice after the game that night. I think since then he has overall steadily improved and now in the last two games is nearer where he should have been at the start of the season. You can be the greatest coach in the world but if a player doesn’t want to put in the extra effort you can’t help them. Hopefully he realizes now what he must do and is a different player next season.
I also think the senior WR’s were extremely over rated at the start of the season and had no chemistry with DJ. Once the younger guys began getting most or all of the snaps he began to improve.
Also, these guys get coached by the coaches on the staff but they all also have hired private coaches they go to as well. It was mentioned DJ was using someone I cannot remember his name. There is no way between the Clemson staff and his private coaching that they would not recognize and address his mechanic and technique issues. So that stuff is not on the coaches that is all DJ not executing what he is being taught.

Just double checked and DJ was ranked as the #1 pocket passer in the country coming out of high school by ESPN. I know the other services had him at or near the top as well. B Young was the #1 dual threat by ESPN as well. I'm sure a flaming will follow but DJ is a bust by any metric you choose. The coaches don't teach him to lock in on one receiver, nor miss 10 yard throws by 10 feet. I feel certain they try to follow basic fundamentals - not saying there are any passing mechanics gurus on the team but still. He got over hyped due in part to his arm talent and enormous size. No knock on DJ or anyone else - in following the Tigers since the 60's and the recruiting part since the early 80's I could put together a long list of "4-5 stars" (back in the day it was Parade All Americans and other recruiting services like Joe Terranova - the godfather of recruiting) that simply did not pan out at Clemson. Vince Robinson, Michael Carr, Billy Luckie, and Willie Simmons come to mind at QB. Too many to list as position players although Kelvin Hankins (O lineman) was first team USA Today All American and first team Parade All American. Was on the roster 4 years at Clemson and never started a game. It happens. Hope Cade can work into a starting role by game 3 or 4. Would like to see DJ stay and keep working but we know that's unlikely. Go Tigers.

Have been BY’s coaches, teaching mechanics, technique and their play designs.
We have Brandon Streeter and TE. Wonderful men, great recruiters, but even during our best years no one has ever used the words “innovative” or “creative” or tossed around genius, offensive guru, etc… you get my point.
Short answer is development and coaching.

DJ and Bryce Young are very different players
Dec 4, 2021, 10:11 PM
|
|
Young is elusive, smart, pinpoint accurate and a very grounded and humble young man. I was crushed when he chose Alabama because there was no doubt in my mind he would be great.
DJ was big and had a cannon arm. Looking at his father, weight was clearly going to be a lifelong issue for him. He tried to come across as humble so I took his word for it. There were questions about his accuracy and form but his HS stats overcame my doubts.
Making the statement they "may as well have been the same player" is just false. Their stats and win percentages were similar and they played in the same area, but that was it. Stylistically, there were almost polar opposites.
One guy will win the Heisman this year, the other is a flaming bust. Happens every year with 4-5 star HS QB recruits.

SHIP Happens. Sometimes players go into a slump or have mental yips. This year DJ never looked like the same QB who played so well against ND. Maybe the large crowds bother him. - no large crowds last year due to COVID.
Every Clemson fan is trying to figure that out. I presume the coaches are too.

Everyone keeps saying he’s a bust but they either didn’t watch the BC and notre dame games last year or they forgot because that Dj didn’t look like a bust. I believe he’s got the yips because there’s now way you look that good last year and now you can’t make basic throws other than because of the yips. I hope he can overcome them BUT it shows pressure gets to him if it is the yips and if that’s the case he won’t be able to handle a DW type drive. Anyways GO TIGERS!!!

I follow your train of thought, watch DJ in HS and he looked better then. But he weighs 30+ lbs more than he was then. Also he wasn't a Dr Pepper/Bojangles pro then. So has he failed to work hard because he "Made It" and while BY actually making more as Saban said he is getting 7digits, had BY tried to build his craft as DJ got too complacent?
BY has definitely improved and DJ was better last year when he didn't have a good income! I think DJ needed to put his big pants on and play better. He has played better last few wks but could he done this earlier in the season?
