Clemson Basketball: Swishes and Air Balls So Far

We are three games into the season, and I'd like to look at the good and the bad so far with our season.
First, the good (swishes):
1. Chase Hunter has been excellent. He is averaging 18.7 points per game, and 5 assists per game. He has a 5:1 assist-to-turnover ratio, which is excellent - especially since he's our primary ball handler at this point. Concerns that he can't run the point seem to be unfounded.
In addition, Chase is shooting 48.8% from the field, including 63.6% from three. He's off to a great start.
2. PJ Hall being back this soon is an unexpected surprise. He certainly isn't at full strength yet, and despite a solid performance against the Gamecocks, I think his presence threw us off some and was a factor in our loss. Brownell has cautioned us for a while now about being patient with PJ as he gets into shape and adjusts to playing games again. I expect to see him play 20-25 minutes a game for at least the next few games.
3. Hunter Tyson is rebounding the ball well. He's averaging just under 10 rebounds per game, including a 19 point, 13 rebound performance against The Citadel.
4. Alex Hemenway is shooting the ball well. He's shooting 55% from the field, and 46% from three. His 9.3 points per game have given us a nice boost.
5. Brevin Galloway has been a bright spot. His 13 points, 4 rebounds, and nearly 3 assists per game have been the production we need alongside Chase Hunter. His 48% shooting from the field is good for a guard.
Now, the bad (air balls):
1. Hunter Tyson isn't scoring like we need him to. Despite his good rebounding, he is only shooting 41% from the field, including 21% on threes. While his 12.3 points per game average so far doesn't look bad, we need to see him get his shooting percentage back into the mid-40s as it has been the last few years. Brownell feels that Hunter is pressing too much, and needs to relax and let the game come to him more.
2. Josh Beadle didn't score his first basket of the year until game 3. He's averaging just 0.7 points per game and shooting just 11% from the field in his 13 minutes per game. His turnovers exceed his points right now. While he is just a freshman, it still seems disappointing that he isn't playing better after his encouraging performance this summer in France.
3. Our rebounding has to get better. We are being outrebounded 35 to 34.3. We especially need to do a better job reducing offensive rebounds by our opponents.
4. Our free throw shooting has been disappointing. We are shooting just 64% on free throws so far. That has to improve.
5. The freshmen aren't as ready to contribute as we would like them to be. They have played sparingly as a group. Dillon Hunter has gotten solid minutes and has done well, but as mentioned before Josh Beadle is still getting his legs under him. RJ Godfrey and Chauncey Wiggins haven't played much, and Chauncey Gibson is redshirting.
It's still early, and 3 games is a small sample size, but it's fun to look at the good and bad so far.

Thanks for the good assessment Judge. I gotta believe Tyson's shots will start falling, he is too good a shooter for them not. And hope the freshmen and our FT shooting improve.

Agree with all of this and good post.
Hopefully our defense will shore up a bit.
I think part of the reason Godfrey and Wiggins haven't played is because Wiggins is more of a 4, and Schef already has that back up spot locked down. Schef needs minutes too. He's just a soph.
I think Godfrey can play the 3 but I believe brownell is worried about his defense. He fouls too much.

The things I’m most worried about: rebounding, three point defense, and the freshmen being almost useless. We really need them to contribute and we need Brownell to be willing to let them.
The things I’m most excited about: I agree — Chase Hunter has been outstanding at PG and PJ Hall coming back early is a great sign.

In fact, I think he really wants to, but doesn't feel that they are at that point yet.
They have to outperform the man in front of them to take their minutes. Otherwise, we are just playing freshmen to play them, even though they don't provide what the guy in front of them provides. That doesn't benefit the team.

-subpar player development
-simplistic and unimaginative playcalling on offense
-unqualified or underqualified coaches occupying many key staff positions
-a coach who doesn't like using the transfer portal

The development I don’t think will be a problems it’s just this clas of rookies are very raw players. Dillon hunter is definitely the most polished but his shooting is really lackluster and he needs to work on that before he gets serious playing time. Godfrey and Wiggins are very raw prospects for opposite reasons. Godfrey has the build and athleticism to be elite he just needs to work on his defense and shooting. He is too physical defensively and gets too many fouls and his shooting is not very good. Wiggins has the opposite problem. He had the potential to be an elite scorer because of his massive frame and his shot (he is already one of the best spot uo shooters in the team), he just needs to get stronger so he can be a better defender and inside player. His skill with the ball and size give him all acc potential but he needs do a lot of work in his frame before he gets there

Hunter Tyson tries to write checks his body can't cash.
Meaning he over extends and does not have the athletic ability to recover. So he certainly needs to settle down and not push the ball too much. He would be better receiving a pass than over dribbling.
Finishing at the rim needs to improve from the whole team. We should not miss so many close in jump hooks and such.
as far as rebounding: We are not a abundantly talented team, but we have a solid team. One area that Coach B has hurt us is in offensive rebounding. The team is so anxious to get back on defense, we way too often do not have anyone to rebound an offensive shot. No one follows their shot. at least half the time a three is taken - especially late in the clock - there is no one near the basket. Against Upstate they had several easy defensive rebounds where no Clemson player was in position to rebound.
For a blue collar team like ours this is a huge problem in games where we are not on fire shooting. That is also why we lose to many single digit games. No second chance points in high percentage distance when you don't rebound on offensive end. Against an Upstate we win, against good teams with offense especially teams with multiple players that can create their own offense we are giving away extra possessions.
For a blue collar team like ours offensive rebounding could be a difference maker and win more games.
For what I have seen so far I expect we will look good in some games when multiple players are shooting well in a given night, yet we will lose several winnable games when we lose the rebounding contest under our own basket!!! These are the games that keep you out of the tournament.
3 or 4 more offensive rebounds wins the SC game. We don't have to roll up a Duke or a UNC we need to beat the teams we are supposed to - rebounding would go a long way toward that.

Tyson is a very bad on ball defender. He’s got size and length but he is not athletic enough to stay in front of people.

He had an incredible game against The Citadel, with 20 points and 14 boards. Nine of those were offensive rebounds.
Then he followed that up with 0 points and 2 rebounds against South Carolina, and 2 points and 4 rebounds against South Carolina and USC Upstate.
One issue is his minutes. They have been substantially decreased with PJ Hall back. Ian played 31 minutes against The Citadel, but just 12 minutes against the Coots and 14 minutes against Upstate.
As much as we want PJ to be back, I do feel that PJ's return against South Carolina made it harder for our team in some ways. The players weren't used to playing or practicing with PJ, and the SC game was not an ideal time to introduce that complication in my opinion.
This isn't to say that Ian would've played better than PJ did that game, but at least he would've provided the stability our players have been accustomed to.

Excellent wrap and discussion all the way around.
As for scar, I thought the same thing about PJ. It was almost like the other players relaxed and felt like PJ was going to step in and not miss a beat from the last time he played... and that's not realistic. He looked like he got a little bit gassed last night late. It won't take him long though.
I love Ian's moxy. Felt there were a couple times last night as well as last year that he got tentative to shoot. Almost scared and the shot was there. But, that confidence will come I hope.
What's your opinion (I don't know bball lingo) for Brad to try a line-up with Chase, hemmingway, hall, Tyson, and Ian. I haven't seen him do that yet. Just seems like teams would have to collapse and pack it in or PJ/Tyson and Ian would have a field day. Then if they did pack it, Chase and Alex would have wide open 3 balls. Which we all know Alex left alone would bomb them in.

Especially to run the backcourt. Thought your prognostications about this team’s success were overly predicated on freshmen guards playing key roles. When has brad brought in impact freshmen? PJ wasn’t even very productive as a freshmen.
If the young kids aren’t going to develop quickly, you can add depth to the list of problems

impact from this year was Dillon Hunter. I still stand by that. He's a natural PG who handles the ball well, makes good decisions, and has the size to defend well. I think he's done well so far, all things considered.
The nice thing is that both Chase Hunter and Brevin Galloway are playing well as the starters. We don't need a freshman guard to provide big minutes right now.

Unfortunately with Brad on the hot seat he has not been able to recruit very well. Probably should have hit the portal more than he did. If you look at the future the program is going down not up. Sometimes we don’t like to look at the truth.

So reading this analysis JK I want to know your early on season takes….
What is considered a successful season for Brownell this year?
What is considered more of the same?
What outcome should result in the firing of Brownell?
Serious question want to know where you stand on each?
