Sometimes the best way to call a defense is to see how the offense is lined up. When teams utilize the HUNH it makes this very difficult. I think what you’re referring to is last year when teams were in HUNH situations and had our D out of position often. I don’t know that much can be done to counter this other than getting into a man coverage or cover two blitz. But I can guarantee Coach V knows where he can improve and will do his best.

Yes, I'm mostly referring to HUNH. We have been burned by HUNH vs. our defensive play call response time for a couple of seasons now. Besides your recommendations of man coverage or cover two, we MAY be able shave some time off of our defense play call response time versus HUNH offensive play call changes.

Why don't you call the Defensive coordinator and ask him!

Ohio State took advantage f this. Aero has a point. They did something last year they didn’t have to all year, and it worked. Georgiwill probably do the same but I think Brent will be ready.

I really hope the "hole" you refer to in our defense will be smaller this year.

Virginia Tech had some success with that hurry up no huddle which they called a sugar huddle, but thankfully we had enough talent to overcome in the second half.
Ohio state, however, used it very effectively. And given their level of talent being equal if not slightly better than our own made it a tough situation. That situation was further complicated by the fact that Skalski was out in the first half and Turner was out in the second half. Those two guys are critical to our defense getting lined up properly.
Of course on the Internet and especially YouTube videos from ESPN and 24/7 and other sports publications the comments are incredibly caustic!
The general consensus by Ohio State and SEC fans is that Venables is overrated and he only has success when he can steal the other teams offensive signs.
There are also idiots posting online that we are using steroids.
Jealousy is an ugly emotion!

drives me nuts and does my heart no good at all. Offense is set and our guys are looking at the sideline, I'm screaming "get set defense", and they don't even hear me from the upper deck.

At the very least, get set in a base formation, then signal in some last second tweaks if needed. However, I will leave it up to BV as he knows what he is doing.

I was figuring BV would use something like this. The ultimate thing to counter this would be to have the players on the field seeing what you see and making the adjustment themselves!
As others have said, "BV will figure it out"!

Has anyone heard anything about this?
Haven't heard anything! However, I was wondering the same thing. People think Clemson steals signals; not true i.m.o: BV just has a photographic memory after studying film on personnel groupings and formations and is able to adjust the defense upon seeing how you are lined up and who you have on the field.
I think opponents have figured that out as well! The first sign was the Pitt game in 2016 when Matt Canada used that "sugar huddle" to get over the ball after discussing the play - quickly get over the ball - then quickly run the play! Which left no time to adjust and players out of position ((((go back and look at the video)))).
Syracuse and their exaggerated pace of play when they had "basketball players" for WR's and a QB with sense enough to lob it up to those WR's or give an inside hand off if the defense was out of position - gave us fits because: "no time to adjust"!
With Pitt and Syracuse though our personnel was better so it wasn't a blow out. What happens when the opponent has as much skill and talent though?
OSU - anomaly - they were "behind hurt" and super motivated to practice beating Clemson every practice starting in the spring. Then with so few games(they still practiced) they still had more prep time. They have good personnel as well. LSU was just a freak of nature of a series of fortunate events for them. A 6th year QB, a next level OC, 7 to 9 players on offense who were going to be future NFL players all happened at the same time/place/year! Tigers still had a shot in that game - but at the end of the day we didn't play well enough.
I've been wondering the same thing though. What's the adjustment and how do you compensate for how opponents are attacking our defense?

I'm 100% sure Coach V recognized that as an issue as well as Dabo. Defenders don't need to look like keystone cops and looking to the sidelines when the ball is snapped. Obviously against the likes of Ohio St. This will probably cause us to be in a less than desirable sets more often than we'd like. Biggest difference should be our defensive front and linebackers causing havoc to the point that the perfect defensive call won't be as necessary as before. Creating havoc in the backfield is better than most calls from the sideline. In Dabo and Coach V we trust!

Good Point! Football is still: execution, running, blocking, tackling!
As fancy as an offense gets it still has to block and execute. Disrupt that by physically dominating the player across from you or by out scheming them. BV is bright enough to make the adjustment and I think he will. He likely won't ever not try and get last minute calls in; but I can see him taking more steps in the event the players on D don't get the call. Having a Skalski is going to be huge. Keeping a LB on the field who can verbalize those last minute adjustments is going to be a must as offensive football changes to compensate for DC's like BV last minute adjustments.
