I haven't made a big deal out of it this year BUT

IT'S AN OFF WEEK, NOT A BYE WEEK. We are not playing a season long softball tournament. It's a season with games. When you played church softball, if you didn't play on Wednesday they didn't call it a bye, they called it an off day. You didn't play, so you had the night off. If you didn't play in a tournament because you were good enough to skip past a certain round then you got a bye into the next round. This is how the words should be used. Please don't use them any other way.

Well, back in the day this guy used to come in and shoot the turkeys every thanksgiving. Because of the responding law enforcement situation and also scaring off all the customers, we worked with tired here and convinced him that both the 10 gauge made a bit of a mess of the barcode, but that shot was a bit hard to separate and time consuming. We got him bowhunting instead

You are correct that it is NOT a “bye week”…

But traditionally, it’s actually called Open Date.

You are incorrect. A quick google would let you know.
In other sports whereby there is an unequal tournament format, a "bye" is the team not competing in that round. That is correct. However, there is one exception: FOOTBALL!!!!!!!
However in both football (and rugby - so two exceptions), a team not competing during an actives season during for rest is considered to have a "bye" or "bye week".

It isn't mutually exclusive:
The NFL started using the term "bye" for the 1966 expansion season because of an odd number of games. Which is really a variation of "standby" Basically, it means the exact same thing as "open date" but with the NFL usage it was almost certainly a off-week. We just placed "open date" on our print media. Why? To allow fans to know that could be a make-up date for a postponed game. Using the term "bye" or "Bye week" is technically correct for football usage. Previously open dates/weeks were just left off the schedule.
It is basically someone claiming that saying we don't have a turf field because we use bermuda grass. It isn't artifical "turf" like astroturf but it bemuda grass. Turf while not necessarily the common usage is technically still correct as turf can be sod/grass etc.

You should probably spend more time on your church softball game than worrying about our bye week.
