I have an SEC question no one's been able to answer

Nov 27, 2013, 3:13 PM

adequately for me:

I know scheduling is left to poindexters in the conference office, but how is it possible that the pre-season favorites to win the SEC Least--UGa and chickentech--conveniently avoided having to play Alabama during the regular season?? Clemson wasn't scheduled to face either Miami OR VaTech this season both of whom were favorites to vie for the ACC Coastal. In point of fact, WHEN was the last time UGa was scheduled to play 'Bama during the regular season??

This balancing of regular season schedules to make sure certain programs don't face each other so as to try and create conference championship matchups is getting beyond annoying. Apparently, there is some cooperation between schools and the schedulers--usuck no longer has to face "The Orange Express" the last 3 games of the regular season--something the chickens whined about for years.

Every conference needs to set rotating opponent lists where a team would only avoid playing a team in another division for 2 year maximums. Then, they'd have to play that team for 4 consecutive years on a home and home basis....This way, we'd know for sure that usuck, or Uga, or 'Bama or LSU; or Clemson, FlaSt, Miami and VaTech didn't achieve rankings by playing a soft conference schedule augmented (like most SEC schedules)by a kleenex OOC schedule as well.

Should the NCAA become involved in setting schedules to try and insure some sort of balance??

the rotation for playing cross division is set in stone and

Nov 27, 2013, 3:16 PM

is not subject to change year to year. It is what it is and either you get lucky or unlucky as to when you draw teams.

Georgia should have picked up

Nov 27, 2013, 3:18 PM

Alabama last year but with A&M and Mizzou joining the conference they received a reprieve.

These things go in cycles. Other than Bama you never know which team is going to be up or down from year to year so scheduling teams is not an exact science.

Re: Georgia should have picked up

Nov 27, 2013, 3:25 PM

yep. Auburn looked like a gimme for a lot of teams going into the season. They went winless in the conference last year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cycles: 2006 Bama was 2-6 in conf, 2007 4-4

Clemson: 2008 4-4
2009 6-2

Cross division rivals are set. Alabama-Tennessee Georgia-Auburn LSU-Florida. They want to keep those rivalry's, the rest is just by chance.

U are correct but still the LUCKY c$$ts dodged Bama, Auburn,LSU and T A &M this year. they have had an unbelievable run of good luck lately. Ga, Fla and Tenn ALL going way down @ the same time is just luck!!

they played the weakest sec schedule EVER, this year.

Nov 28, 2013, 1:30 AM

and still are relying on a mizzou loss to see if they go to the seccg, or not. any of the national sports pundits that claim the sec is # 1 THIS YEAR, loses all credibility ,in my mind. they are behind the acc, and the pac 12, with the big 12 knocking hard on their door.

Last year USC played #5 UGA at home and on the road at #9 LSU and at #2 UF and at #11 Clem and played #18 Michigan in the bowl game and went 3-2 against ranked teams.

This year USC has played at #11 UGA close game tough loss, at UCF currently ranked #19, at #5 Missouri 2OT win and host #6 Clemson with a chance to go 3-1 against ranked teams.

While Clemson has hosted #5 UGA Close hard fought win and hosted #5 FSU lost by 37 and we now travel to Columbia to play #10 USC

All in all both teams have played pretty even schedules with Clemson playing #5 UGA and #5 FSU at home and #10 USC on the road.
While USC has played on the road at #5 Missouri, #11 UGA and #19 UCF and at home against #6 Clemson.

jax, ugay and mizzou are the only ranked sec teams they play!

Nov 28, 2013, 6:44 AM [ in reply to Re: they played the weakest sec schedule EVER, this year. ]

this is what i am saying. i am not sure any sec team has played only two ranked conference teams (with their entire conference schedule already completed) that is very acc-ish if you ask me, especially considering all us clemson fans (and everyone else not in the sec) has to hear all the bs about that mighty conference anytime we watch or listen to a sports show.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With Bama being the only real top dog in the conference...

Nov 27, 2013, 3:29 PM

I believe their schedule determines who might win the other side of the conference. Better said, whichever punk doesn't face the champ will have the better conference record.

Next year should be the beginning of the new rotation in the SEC. USC drops Arkansas as a permanent opponent and picks up Texas A&M. From that point on they rotate teams on a home and away basis starting with Auburn. Next years schedule has them playing at home Georgia, Missouri, Texas A&M, Tennessee and on the road Clemson Florida Auburn Kentucky Vanderbilt.

the "orange express" which I always called the "orange crush" on the coot schedule still has a game left to play. The vols did their part, the gators almost won despite having their worst team since 1979. Now it is time for the #7 team in the country to give the chickens orange nightmares for another 365 days!

Re: I have an SEC question no one's been able to answer

That's one of the main problems with only having 8 conference games and also a protected crossover game. You may as well not even be in the same conference as teams from the opposite division.

Not having Alabama on their schedule was the main reason they were picked to win the division.

Life, not sure what that has to do with beating clemson 4 straight. I'm sure on a regular basis clemson would beat these teams you mention.

Re: I have an SEC question no one's been able to answer

Nov 28, 2013, 10:11 AM

The OP asked how are SEC schedules determined. Until expansion the opponents were predetermined along with home and away locations. There wasn't any planning or scheming to avoid teams to favor anyone it was luck of the draw. Each team had a constant opponent from the other division they played every year. Two teams from the other division rotated on a two year basis. This did not change until expansion and adjustments had to be made. Next year begins the new rotations and barring further expansion the schedule rotations should not change. USC drops Arkansas as permanent opponent and picks up Texas AM and Mississippi State rotates off the schedule and Auburn comes on for two years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Absolutely not to the NCAA being
