Tech vs Clemson. I've had this game circled all year....

Do you realize that since we started ACC play in 1983, our record against Clemson is 16-16? From 96 to 2001, there were 6 straight games decided by a field goal. This is a great rivalry. Hearts have been broken on both sides in this game.
Here's the deal with Tech:
1) Our QB is a gamer. Justin Thomas is the best spread-option QB that Paul Johnson has had to work with. Thomas is the key to our offense. He can run. He can throw. He can scramble and make plays out of nothing. He can also run the triple option play efficiently, which makes him the first QB under Johnson that can actually do that well.
2) Our offense is full of guys with experience. We have playmakers at WR and RB. Our OL is even not a liability for the most part.
3) Our defense stinks. But they do get some turnovers. We don't really shut anyone down. But we can take the ball away from them here and there. For instance, we had 2 defensive TD against NC State. But they moved the ball well on us early.
4) Special teams is hit-or-miss. Sometimes, we block some kicks. Our FG kicker isn't the greatest, but not the absolute worst either.
5) We lost to Duke because we gave them the game on stupid turnovers and a few horribly timed penalties. North Carolina beat us because we couldn't stop their offense, period.
If you guys were starting Cole Stoudt, I think we'd beat you. But with Watson and your tough defense, you should be favored. Your defense will be the best we've faced. I think we have a reasonable shot to beat you. But as I said, you should be favored.

Our vets on D and their experience against it helps us a ton but you are always just one missed assognment from a TD. I agree with Watson we'll score some points, but this game is almost always close. Next to the coots and the criminoles, you guys are a true rival with proximity and competitiveness. Anyway, hope you stomp the Dawgs, but lose 9 fumbles this week

Should be a tough game. I think we have more playmakers than we've had the last few years. Hopefully, we can make it a good game.

us not having our SS Smith for the first half is a concern with a long play action pass. He's played against you 4 years now and knows the keys to watch, Green his replacement does not. I agree about your QB. Lee never was a fit. Will be interested to see how well we run the ball, with Watson that really opens things up there in a way it isn't with Stoudt. I think turnovers will play a big, big role. If our DL can force some mistakes with penetration, or if Watson is rusty and throws some picks, really think something like that turns this game one way or the other

I'm a lot less nervous now than I was with some of those Chan Gailey teams, though. The last two years we've got it done, and I think our defense is going to make life even more difficult than last year. if we all recall, last year's game (with the same DL) wasn't ever in doubt. Most of the scoring happened with the backups in, who were played very early (start of the second half).
Two fun stats that illustrate why I'm not skeert of GT:
* GT hasn't won a game against a ranked opponent in three years. * GT is 1-5 in bowl games with CPJ at the helm. The vast majority of these against teams that have a pulse on defense. GT is averaging 15 points per bowl game. * GT $hitcans average defenses. On the flipside, they bog down against the top 25 D's.
CPJ repeatedly proven that he can't win the big game with his own recruits. He has stunk out loud in bowl games. He hasn't done much of anything since Chan Gailey's recruits graduated (2011).
Tigers win. Defense confuses the new QB, Watson and the offense get back on track against the softest defense we've faced in weeks.

Just to be clear, I'm not a fan of CPJ. But this is the best offense we've had in years, probably going back to 2009. You guys will probably beat us. But I think we can make it a better game than last year.

Now I just worry about our linemen's knees. Seriously, I dread this game because of the cut blocks, not because I'm worried about losing. I can't remember who, but someone looked at opponents playing triple option teams and how they fared in the immediate week afterwards. It was some awful win/loss ratio, with injury being a component of that.
I'm not bashing you specifically, I just really wish this rivalry could get back to pre-CPJ glory. Now it's just a matter of "can we keep their QB/RBs from falling for 2-3 yards for 60 minutes?". I don't know how you watch this offense for 12 games a year.

GT has its best ever offense. Clemson has the number one defense. Strength on strength should be fun as hell to watch. While I dont think it will be a runaway like many folks here believe (its a Clemson board so of course thats the prediction), I do think it will come down to the last possession. I'm glad Watson is playing against us because I wouldnt want to beat Clemson at half strength. Ive always admired Clemson and love Dabo. Good guy and unbelievable recruiter. I hope GT wins, obviously, but after that I will be pulling for you guys hard against the coots.

Secondary strengths to keep in mind, we're not just the #1 defense, but also the #4 Rushing Defense in the nation (only allowing 90..9 yards of rushing per game), #1 in the nation for tackles for loss, #1 highest amount of yards lost in sacks and #2 in the nation in sacks....doesn't bode well for teams that primarily use the run.

Against crappy to average defenses. Check out how you've done against ranked opponents (three year winless streak) and bowl games (1-5).
GT is garbage against good competition. You beat up on sub-par to middling teams, though. You are built to do that.

if the refs don't beat us (cough...holding calls called by same official against same player that decided the game)
or if miracle snaps don't go over our punter's head
you will get beat...your record shouldn't be 16-16
it is unholy how many breaks you guys have received over the years

GT hasn't had "playmakers" since PJ started recruiting. You play a joke of an offense and have no ability to adjust once a team stops the run.
Gamers? Maybe. Playmakers? Athletes? No.

J. Thomas is better than the previous, having more TD's than Int's, but the 50% completion percentage remains the same as the rest. It'll be a good test for our #1 ranked D, hopefully there's no dirty blocks....that's the only thing I hate about that style of offense.

since 2003, and have had some good teams go down and there and stink up the joint.
I think it all depends on how healthy Watson truly is, and if he can play with no reservations. Little things make a difference. How comfortable/confident will he be when he is bracing for a hit or landing? How confident is he to stiff arm?
If we have a healthy Watson, I think we win by 5-10.
If Watson isn't the running threat we need him to be, or if he has lost a little zip on his throws due to the hand, we could lose.
If Cole plays, we lose by 14+.
