I don’t agree that our WR group

Just forgot how to play football. I played a little QB in HS and trained with some college coaches and one thing all QB coaches preach is touch on the ball. If you throw a tight spiral, it can fly at the same speed as a very hard thrown flapping duck pass, with less effort. Also, it is very hard for ANY person to catch a wobbly football, especially when it’s coming fast.
A LOT of DJ’s passes this year we’re ducks, hidden by the factor that he can throw them a million miles an hour. All this to say, a very hard thrown/not spiraling football is the hardest kind to catch.
I find it hard to believe that Ngata, Williams, Ross; who all have made insanely difficult catches look easy in their times with other QBs, all forgot how to catch in the same season.
DJ is a good kid, he’s just not a college QB. He can throw a 95 mph fastball, and should consider going over to the Diamond for the Tigers.
Spot the ball.

Don’t remember when but I thought he played most year with a broken thumb or finger on his throwing hand. That would make it extremely hard to throw a tight spiral

I agree with you lemon. I made a similar post saying that DJ didn’t throw a catchable ball most of the time and the tnet coaches “lambasted me. If he had injuries that affected his throwing why was TP never used?

Maybe DJ was injured and I agree he shouldn't have been out there. That is on the coaches because TP was terrible and shouldn't have been recruited. Hence DJ had to play. They should have played HH some to see what he could do. They were probably afraid that DJ would walk and we would be left even worse. I'm sure the receivers didn't forget how to play but they are all injury prone. Maybe DJ will get his touch back if he was injured and there will be a great QB competition with Cade.

Do did not know how to throw someone open...look at Florida's qb two years ago vs 3 years ago...look ar Miami now vs. D king...best example was tamu qb 2 to 4 years ago. Awful passer but would throw to an open spot and darn near beat us at away game.. dj has a cannon but where it goes nobody knows...any qb can make the ball catchers look bad...and did!

When did you see the 3 receivers you named on the field together or how much for the year? Not a lot, I can recall several drops by all of them(some ducks, some spirals) we need to be honest, the 3 you mentioned were injured for most of the year and DJ got very little help.

In hindsight, the comparison on his 247 profile was spot-on

Photo is attached of his comparison.
Personally, his play reminds me a lot of Cardale Jones.

Yeah, I had read that before and asked myself what happened since this was 2018. Although, it does mention needed work in progressions. As others have aluded, a lot was mental. Especially this year. Although mechanical was about the same as 2020.
Quite possibly it's a combination of all points above. As for the index splint, it first appeared in the wake game. So it must have happened in the UConn game. He'll get it straight.

DJ is an NFL QB!!!!!! You seriously are blaming him for guys dropping balls that hit right in their hands? Many of which were beautiful! But I don’t care if they came in sideways if it hits your hands catch it if you drop it it’s your fault not the QB’s!

You’ve been hallucinating in regards to what you think you have seen. He didn’t crack the top 100 in CFB QB’s. He may make it to the Pros .. but he certainly won’t as a QB. That is fact, not an opinion.

Our WR room has declined in performance every year since Scott left, to the point that this past year they couldn't catch a cold and couldn't block a pillow. The blocking thing in particular has been getting worse and is one of the reasons ETN's long runs dried up last year. Maybe the guy running that group is part of the problem.

2020 set the record for passing yards per game for Clemson. This last year was awful but your statement is factually incorrect.

Performance to a standard and statistics are not the same thing, particularly stats that also include other factors. A monumental effort from Lawrence and a tremendous drop in the running game in a historically bad year for defenses do not equate to good WR play. In 2018 we bossed Alabama's DBs since then they haven't had a single good game against a top opponent. In 2018 you could at least argue we had the best WR room in the country, now we are miles behind. I've watched the games the last 3 years and it's pretty clear that there has been a steady decline in blocking, getting open, and catching 50/50 balls.

I disagree. I’m not sure where your portrayal of Ngata and Williams
Jan 9, 2022, 1:01 PM
|
|
comes from here:
“ I find it hard to believe that Ngata, Williams, Ross; who all have made insanely difficult catches look easy in their times with other QBs, all forgot how to catch in the same season. “
Ngata had 7 catches last year, 17 the year before. This year was easily his best season.
EJ was out for a good portion of this season and could easily have been hampered by that thumb injury.
Ross doesn’t need to have forgotten how to catch. He spent a year on the sideline recovering from spinal surgery. It’s not a leap to think he wasn’t quite there mentally.
In my dream scenario, DJ gets his head on straight, loses some weight, heals his finger and works in the off-season to be the QB we all hoped he’d be. No doubt he had a tough year but the WR group was rough. Injured, for sure, but I just didn’t see the hunger for the ball or to make the play away from the ball like I am used to from Clemson WRs.

For sure he has a 100 MPH FB pass, and any receiver would have a hard time catching less than 30 yards away from DJ. To DJ, it didn't matter if the receiver was 10 yards away, or 30 yards away, he threw the same 100MPH pass!!!

I agree that he didn't seem to have a lot of "touch" when it came to his passes. All seemed as though he was trying to show everybody how hard he could throw which only is important if they can be caught.

He threw a lot of them at guys feet, too. Amazed me how so many screen passes he threw in the dirt.

Ross was coming off an almost career-ending neck injury. And he played in the slot, which isn’t his natural position.
Ngata was very productive, when healthy, but was constantly out of the lineup. That was true of him last year as well.
EJ Williams played hurt all year. He needed surgery on his hand and knee, so he was never 100% when he was on the field.
Ladson was never healthy.
Ajou couldn’t block, so the coaches couldn’t trust him.
Beaux and Dacari were true freshmen
Will Swinney and Will Brown were walk-ons
Stellato was injured in fall camp and wasn’t ready
Spector was out all year
But, sure, all DJ’s fault.

You are correct. A fast ball with a tight spin is easier to catch than a knuckle ball in baseball. Same thing in football. I attribute most of our drops this year due to balls with too much heat and slow rotation that is not a tight spiral. Just my analysis but DJ has very poor feet inside and outside the pocket. In just about all sports, it all starts with good fundamental technique. DJ’s feet are way too wide and he over strides. Watch Tom Brady’s feet in the pocket, always underneath his body and has little to no stride. Also,TB has an impeccable release point (high) with no head movement. This equals very accurate throws with great velocity/touch coupled with very little wobble on all his throws. All said, DJ’s throws are HARD to catch on a consistent basis.
