I believed Cade's development, or lack thereof, was our problem.

Sep 24, 2024, 5:50 AM

So I'll admit he is the reason we are winning. I still resent that Dabo didn't bench DJ after a few games and let Cade mature.

Wait, didin't we want Cade benched after the GA game? We're kind of fickle that way aren't we. And if Cade doesn't play well this weekend, we'll want him benched again as well as want Dabo on the hot seat. We are awesome!

I was defintely one of them. I was behind DJ all the way till he single handedly lost the 2022 SC game.
I was a believer in Cade until the GA game. I said he does not have it, after that game, we are toast. Thank you Cade for making a liar out of me. The improvement is astonishing. And am I ever glad to see it.

IDK what Dabo was up to but I had the same situation coaching Dixie Baseball.

Sep 24, 2024, 12:26 PM [ in reply to Re: I believed Cade's development, or lack thereof, was our problem. ]

My assistant coach was learning the game. He had a wonderfully compliant son, 12 yr/o who wanted to pitch. The father asked me about it and I told him the kid would have to undergo some exercises to enable him to locate a pitch. I won't go into details about the exercises.

After several hours of one on one coaching the kid was locating a pitch perfectly but I'd not allowed him to throw hard. His dad told me the kid was ready so I put him in as my starter and he was absolutely throwing nothing but strikes right down the middle. I had an attitude about my assistance coach trying to dictate the terms of his son pitching so I after the score was 7-0 in the top of the first with bases loaded and no outs his dad came and said, 'I think it's time to take XXXXXXX out.

I called for a time and when to the mound and ask the kid if he wanted to come out. He affirmed and I relieved him.

I'd put him in the game for spite being that his father who knew absolutely nothing was giving me his opinion and not asking for mine.

That makes me wonder if Dabo wasn't doing the exact same thing to DJ and Big Dave. I'm no accusing but it's a simple speculation.

DJ sucks and Imo, he will always suck at the QB position. He might made a DE if he didn't avoid all contact no matter the results, maybe.

Sometimes you just got to grow into the role. He is maturing as a QB.***

I still believe he didn't get very many first team reps due to focus on DJ and that was why they said he wasn't ready.

we will never know but that is certainly plausible. I like Dj personally but I though he got way too long a leash at Clemson.

Some thing require time.

IN our "win now" mindset in modern society; often we do not give things time to grow into what it's going to be.

Hopefully, the best is yet to come when it comes to CK2.

I agree with the OL assessment, but DJU had a superb OL at Oregon State and was still just meh.

It's not as if they were always under pressure.

Sep 24, 2024, 12:16 PM [ in reply to I believe it was more O-Line than Cade or DJ ]

Dj couldn't hit a laterally moving target and probably never will. Cade struggled with the same symptom last season. Cade had happy feet while DJ's were dead so Cade could scramble but DJ tripped over his own feet.

A good QB makes everyone on the offense look better. A poor QB has the exact opposite effect. Cade turned the corner. I'm not sure DJ will ever be able to overcome that slow first step.

If no one else will say it, I will. Too bad DJU wasn't good enough to make the team better so CK, and many others, could have played most of the 2nd half to grow and be coached on bad tendencies.

Cade has certainly matured in his role and I think much of his improvement comes from improved OL play.

With DJ, we got to the ACCCG. Based on how Cade played last year and assuming he was better last year than the previous year, not sure if we would have gotten there with Cade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Think how far Cade would have grown had he started in 12 games two years.

Sep 24, 2024, 6:17 PM

That was my point. Last season would have been much better and this year would be like he'll be next year.

Development is strange and happens to folks at different rates and to different depths of expectation! Our time frame may not be theirs but there is no doubt Cade is on the TL full meal deal! What appears to be his common trait now is something he just found...DJU still has not found it! It is contagious and has effected our WRs and maybe everyone else on the team...keep putting it in the H2O!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJ led us to an 8-0 start and an initial CFP Top 4 ranking.

Sep 24, 2024, 12:23 PM

When we were up by 28 on La Tech earlier season, Cade (the true freshman) came in and within two series Tech was back within 14 with an entire quarter to go.

No game under DJ was a blowout enough to afford the newbie his live reps. Dabo did pull DJ in the Syracuse game (#8) and Cade helped us claw back, but it wasn't anything special he did then - it just wasn't the stink show that DJ was producing.

He had a chance vs ND and flubbed spectacularly. DJ went on to produce two of his better outings immediately afterwards against quality ACC opponents (Miami and GT). When DJ crapped the bed early in the ACCCG Dabo was quick with the hook and the rest is history.

Bottom line is Cade had opportunities and didn't capitalize on them. DJ had us in the CFP hunt until the end of the last game of the regular season.

2025 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. Cade hadn't shown he was better than DJ at this point

Plus you don't risk throwing out a great season just to let the future qb mature.

makes him better than DJ. At least the last couple of games, but I'll just wait and see what the next two weeks look like before I make a real opinion.

Dabo has a very good reason and it may well have been to boost DJ's stats...

Sep 24, 2024, 6:25 PM

to make it easy for him to find a landing spot when Cade got ready. It might have been a promise contingent upon DJ doing his very best. It may also have been a situation where if he gave Cade the starting job DJ would have entered the portal immediately and left us without a decent backup.

IDK but I'm sure Dabo had a significant reason which justifies leaving DJ in during the latter part of the games.

With Cade coming out of the games very early it's for sure his backups will get a much better chance to develop than he had.

I do agree with you there. Dabo stuck with DJ a little too long, I think. I can only speculate why. Mostly, I think he loved the kid and kept hoping things would click, much as they have done for Cade. It just never happened.

The improvement of Cade and the OL are the result of opening up the play book! Prior to the App St. game everyone in the stadium, especially the other team coaches and players, knew what we were going to do. We were going to throw a 5 yard route to the sideline, a bubble screen, or run between the tackles. We were only using 25% of the field. Not much area for even a poor team to cover! In the App St game we finally started using the whole field- passes over the middle, passes over the top, runs to the outside. Much easier for the OL to complete their assignments when the other team doesn’t know what to expect!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's possible opening up the playbook was...

Sep 24, 2024, 6:28 PM

contingent upon Cade and the receivers learning what each other were doing.

I'm not slighting our O-line but Cade could make a poor O-line look good.
