I am quickly losing interest!

With all this expansion talk and leaving the ACC or staying, etc., I am quickly getting turned off by it all. What little bit of purity left in the sport is gone. Its all about money and the race to the pot of gold. I am in business and I get the necessity of staying competitive and that money is crucial to keeping up. However I dont want to go the big 12. I dont want Clemson traveling halfway across the country 4-5 times per year just to play the like of team like Texas, ect. I want a southeastern team playing predominantly other southeastern teams. We need the fix the ACC and stay right where we are. If we go to the Big 12 we will lose our identify and the purity of Clemson University.

money, but it is also about staying relevant and competitive in football. If FSU leaves, or if they stay, the ACC is falling further behind in the football race.
Not a flame, but wondering how you think the ACC could be fixed? and also how you think by joining the Big XII Clemson would lose it's identity?

For one I think we need a new commissioner. Then add a couple of solid schools to make the 16. Everything ebbs and flows and even though the ACC has not been on top its still a power conference and recognized as such. I truly believe we would be the red headed step child in the Big 12.

the ACC is right now or with Swofford in general. Adding Pitt/Syracuse didn't help and the new TV deal doesn't sound very good. I'm just afraid that the ACC is being (or has been) left behind.
I agree we need a new commissioner and a couple of football powerhouses...but unfortunately I think the ship has sailed.

who in the Big XII is relevant? Yes OSU and Baylor won this year, but do you really consider them relevant in the grand scheme of things.
Everyone assumes that Clemson would make the jump to the Big XII and be in the top 3 or 4. But we could just as easily make the jump and be mediocre.
Also, all the talk is centered just around football. Hopefully the powers that be are also considering the non-revenue sports. Everyone griped because we dropped swimming because we weren't willing to spend the money to build a new facility. What's going to happen when we start dropping programs because it's decided that it cost too much to send them across the country to play?

The ACC has become a watered-down joke of a football conference. It's all about Swofford's dream of making the ACC a basketball conference for his beloved Tar Holes. You ACC homers will regret one day that you had a chance to do the right thing for our university, and blew it.

And that is exactly my point: With our weak SOS, do you think staying will increase our chances of landing another NC? I think not.

The ACC has become a watered-down joke of a football conference.
The ACC is down right now. All the teams are there to be great. It's got to happen on the field.
It's all about Swofford's dream of making the ACC a basketball conference for his beloved Tar Holes.
I really do not like John Swofford, but during his tenure, he has added: Miami - Unquestionable football school. VT - Unquestionable football school. BC - Unquestionable football school (not much for football although they were solid for several years when they joined. Regardless...NOT considered a "basketball school") Pitt - Arguably a football school (sorry...I know everyone wants to call them a basketball school, but it's just not the case). Syracuse - Basketball school.
I fail to see how these additions, all under Swofford's watch, scream "Basketball juggernaut". Why didn't they go after Louisville?
You ACC homers will regret one day that you had a chance to do the right thing for our university, and blew it.
We shall see, I guess. It is my opinion that a jump to the Big 12 would be the mistake that we would look back on and regret.

Constantly wanting to go with what they think is the "perfect" conference, they're going to destroy everything that is a natural fit for Clemson. Leave the long-term rivalries, leave the conference we founded, leave the geography that most of our students and recruits come from, leave the geography where most of our fans and alumni actually live, join a conference that will make it very hard for people to travel to away games and FORGET taking the family. Chase those millions...that's all that matters. Of course, we already have Taj Mahal facilities and multi-millionaire coaches, but MORE! We need more or we'll be irrelevent! How much more before this whole thing is just too much and we start to lose interest in the arms race?

respectable reason to want to leave (or most defensible).
But understand that if you advocate an ACC to Big 12 move, you're saying that you want our well-known traveling fan base to go from 10,000+ to about 500, that you want Clemson to play in front of a crowd that knows nothing about them, etc., etc. Easy for you to say living in South America. Clemson administration has to take into account the whole fan base.

Just over a year ago the Big 12 looked as if it was losing its main players. People forget history so readily these days.

The Big 12 teams have solidified their resolve to maintain their conference. Each team has now signed away it's TV rights. Texas can leave but not without buying back their TV rights from the remainder of the conference members. Recond what thats worth?

Purity?
May 14, 2012, 12:51 PM
|
|
Purity isn't gonna put any money in our pockets. Now you may not like it but the purity factor has long been gone in all of sports. This isn't 1972 and I don't want to be stuck in 82 like Uncle Rico. Like it or not money is the name of the game and if you don't want to play the game then you sit on the sidelines. Fix the ACC? How can they fix it...they keep making boneheaded decisions. The last good decisions the front office made was getting FSU, VT, BC and Miami to join. Its gone downhill since then. Pitt and Cuse? Are you kidding me? Worse decision on the planet from a football perspective and its football not basketball that brings the cash in but they cant seem to grasp that. Get this one important fact. If the other conferences beat us at the money game then eventually we will fall at the wayside slowly but surely. When the recruits stop coming then its over. We lose FSU and it quite simply is over. So we can sit and watch FSU leave or we can be proactive and actively seek another deal for ourselves. If not then take a look at conference USA cause that is where the ACC is headed. Conference USA has purity though...so maybe thats what the OP is looking for. Maybe this will change his mind...picture the chickens kicking our #### year in and year out and all of us old timers sitting around talking about our once great Tigers. Is that what you want cause it surely can happen. If we let this happen then there is no turning back it will be forever or at least in all of our lifetimes.

1. ACC has: Maryland, Pitt, Syracuse, BC, VT/ UVA and wants to add Rutgers/ND/UCONN
2. If CU & FSU bail, others are likely to follow. Rumored candidates include Miami, GT, and a whole host of others
* You probably can't fix the ACC. It's too loaded with basketball schools who have no interest in competing in football. It's pretty clear from the constant blaming of FSU, CU, Miami, & VT for not winning more that they have no interest in picking up the slack.
