DW4 did not HAVE to wear the patch. He wanted to in order to show respect for one of Clemson's greats who was a huge part of restoring the program in the late '70's, after a very long drought.
Do you know anything about Clemson football?!

College numbers shouldn't be retired. The Ring of Honor will suffice very nicely for ultimate honors.

Both made significant contributions to the football program. What Steve Fuller did in the late 70's was as significant AT THE TIME as what DW4 has done. We didn't have dreams of the national championship quite yet, but it was certainly nice to go to a decent bowl and win some games. It helped get the program on track to recruit the players who won the 1981 National Championship. Fuller was also an All-American and Heisman candidate.

It was Steve Fuller who put Clemson in the National spotlight in the '77 and '78 seasons, took us to the next level and primed the pump for the 81 national championship.
The games with Notre Dame in 77/79 and the Woody Hayes episode in 78 actually set us on the trajectory we enjoy today....without a doubt.

Nothing stupid about it. Steve Fuller was one of the best quarterbacks to play for Clemson, before DeShaun. DeShaun was honored that Fuller agreed for him to wear the #4. Know your Clemson history before your lips start flapping. Here is a tip...you might want to look up the meaning of the word respect in the dictionary.
