I think it has been for a long time. I had to work in Mississippi several times in the 1996 -1998 timeframe and it was either #1 or certainly in top 5 back then.

The theory goes that the settlers of south east US were primarily Scots Irish herdsman. Herdsman were required by trade to respond to theft aggressively with violence. Consider also the Wild West, rustlers were condemned to death. Having a reputation of merciless retribution was good for business.
That intensity in violence of response becomes ingrained in Appalachian and deep southern culture. It’s just a theory but it’s pretty interesting. It makes sense to me when I watch the owner of my company consistently make poor business decisions when their reputation is on the line.
Michigan did a really interesting experiment about how people respond to insults specifically southerners that supports the claims that southerners tend to respond with aggression.

Being coy just makes it gross.
Sure black cultures and communities can also tend to be cultures of honor. Even if you remove all murders committed by black individuals then US murder rates would dwarf European comparisons. So the problem isn’t inherently a racial problem, but the fact that there is a difference is an interesting barometer as to what the underlying reasons actually are.

That's actually not true, at least with regards to gun murders. White Americans per capita gun murder numbers really aren't far off from many European countries. The problem with the US murder stats is that Hispanic gun murder rates are several multiples higher and AA gun murder rates are in the neighborhood of ten plus times higher than whites. There's a pretty clear correlation between these demographics and crime in pretty much any area in the US. Now this is referencing gun murders so perhaps non gun murder rates skew heavily towards white people. I haven't seen those stats so not saying you're wrong just that the gun murder rates are definitely skewed extremely heavily among non-whites.

Sorry was posting from memory and had to go look. Actually AA gun murders are more like 20 plus times, not 10. That's quite a disparity which will quickly skew crime stats for an entire country.

Most studies on emotional reactions support that people from honor cultures will have more of a heightened response to insults to their social image or person. I can understand how this would support your interesting theory on why southerners react more intensely than northerners. Northerners have no honor.

Great call.
Sowell is one of those folks that I don’t always agree with but I always enjoy and seek out reading because it’s well written, challenging and always on the pulse of America. Joseph Stiglitz is a great foil if you want a deeper understanding of Keynesian applications, although he dabbles much less is social theories and racial theories and mostly sticks to Econ. But he’s a great writer, and worth reading whether or not you agree with him because he is so good at laying out the premise of a given position. At least that’s my opinion.

The statistics are what they are. Yes, Black Americans are far more violent than white Americans per capita. I think it’s a culture problem and lack of fathers in the home problem.
Music glorifying selling drugs, gang banging, being with tons of women, and shooting people contributes as well.
Figure out how to put fathers in the home and I believe that will solve most of the problem.

Being that we are a majority white country, there are way more poor white people in America than black people. Approximately 16 million white Americans are considered lower class while 7 million black people are considered lower class. Sure black people are poorer per capita. That doesn’t make up for the fact that they make up 13% of the population yet commit over 50% of the murders. Also, white people own guns.
There are plenty of black people that will tell you the black community, for the most part, has a serious culture issue.
Not sure what inequalities you are talking about.

There is a much longer history and the scenarios are apples and oranges. The culture issues you brought up earlier with music etc weren't even around years ago when murder rates were extremely high as well.

...if you're looking for one common variable it's the gun availability.
Australia's 1996 National Firearms Agreement (NFA), significantly contributed to a decline in firearm-related deaths, including homicides.
The studies are out there.
On a side note, the second amendment hasn't been curiously absent from this discussion.

Yep….Guns are the issue. I love ignorance. Where there is a will there is a way. Guns are low hanging fruit but rest assured human murders occurred with prevalence long before a single firearm was invented.

Tiger drum, you are correct. Blacks make up for most of the crimes by a large margin yet no one will mention it for fear of being labeled a racist of which I am not but facts are facts. Martin Luther King would have never allowed this to happen but no black leader stepped up to fill his shoes.

That would make for an interesting comparison for sure. How many of the top 30 cities in the US have been run predominantly by pubs the last twenty years? And i dont mean the occasional Pub mayor. I mean run from to to bottom for decades like most of them are by Dems?
